If you want to merge MP4 files without re-encoding, Boilsoft video Joiner gets the job done every single time. It’s super straightforward and perfect if you're just starting out, though you do have to pay for it. You can probably find some "free" version if you search on Google, but whatever.
If there’s no Democratic Party support, then that monitor isn't going to show anything from an external HDMI device like a DVD player. If you're just planning on using the HDMI port on your PC's graphics card, though, it doesn't even matter. Those adapters work perfectly fine with HDMI—I actually tested this myself when I needed a long run for a setup I had going, using two DVI-to-HDMI adapters and a 5-meter HDMI cable.
Honestly, grab a DVI-to-HDMI adapter for like ten bucks and you've basically got an HDMI port on that monitor. I’m actually rocking that exact same screen right now, and if I recall correctly from the manufacturer's site, it supports HDMI, so it should play nice with external devices. The thing is, I don't have any external gear lying around to test it with—everything I own, from my cable box to my digital tuners, is hooked directly into my PC—so I can't say for sure if that HDMI compatibility actually holds up in practice.

I've been rocking some WD 500GB 3.5'' external drives, specifically from the Volume 2 series, for a few years now. Honestly, haven't run into any real issues with them.
Just waiting on prices to dip a bit (and for the right model to pop up), then I’ll probably grab a WD 2TB 2.5'' with USB 3.0. In my opinion, there's zero point in buying USB 2.0 anymore unless you're in a massive rush to get a huge drive.
