How to unlock a Netgear Nighthawk modem?

Hey everyone,
Just a quick question for the group. When I signed up for the Xfinity home internet option through AT&T, I went ahead and bought the Netgear Nighthawk modem outright to avoid being locked into a rental agreement. So, I own the thing, even if it's branded by AT&T.
Right now, I’m using a Spectrum-branded modem at home, and I have a nagging feeling it’s the reason my Wi-Fi is acting up. I want to swap in this Netgear unit from AT&T just to see if things actually improve.
Is that AT&T modem unlocked, meaning I can just plug it in where the Spectrum one is currently sitting?
Or am I going to have to mess around with a bunch of extra settings to get it running?
Basically, does it need some kind of official unlocking process first?
