GPU Buying Guide - (Read first post) in Desktops ·
The admin just dropped a teaser in the newsletter about some upcoming "event" involving better availability or deals on graphics cards. Apparently, we’re supposed to keep a close eye on our social media feeds to catch the news.

I wonder what they actually have in mind? Is it going to be some kind of giveaway on Facebook or Twitter where it's a race to see who can click fast enough?

The other day, I picked up a 2TB Seagate Ultra Touch with that extra USB-C adapter at Los Angeles for just over $133. It’s been pretty seamless since I can plug the USB-C directly into my phone and just dive right into copying files or streaming 4K HDR content without any hassle. On my desktop, I’m seeing speeds around 140 MB/s for both reading and writing—which makes sense, considering the drive is totally empty, right? Honestly, it feels like a solid 2TB option for $133, though I have to wonder if those 4TB 2.5-inch drives might actually be a better value per terabyte, even if they tend to be a bit slower.

Didn't we already agree that 4GB just doesn't cut it anymore?

Aargh! 😬 I bought this card brand new for less than $500, and now I see it popping up in an eBucks newsletter being touted as a "great deal" at $2000 🤦 :

Which PSU should I buy? in Desktops ·
I wonder why a power supply like this wouldn't come with adequate PCIe cables? What kind of specific setup would even require that extra cable? I actually picked this up from Best Buy because I thought I might need an additional 2-pin connector, though my GTX 1060 didn't really demand it since the built-in 6-pin was enough. It turns out it’s actually coming in handy now that I'm testing out a borrowed BlackRock card (which uses an 8+6 configuration), because it refuses to boot unless every single pin is connected. That said, isn't a 500W power supply a bit too weak for a card like that? It's strange, because it really should be pulling less power than the GTX 1060.

The fact that it isn't curved might actually be its biggest drawback, because when you're dealing with a VA panel this large, you're almost certainly going to run into those annoying shifts in color and contrast toward the edges once you're sitting at a normal working distance.

I've been thinking about selling my GTX 1050 Ti while I can still get a decent amount for it, maybe save that cash to pick up something better down the road? Does it actually make sense to pull the trigger on that right now?

I think you might be misreading the situation a bit, because the 1050 Ti isn't really part of this price surge. There should be plenty of them available since they aren't particularly useful for crypto mining anyway.

Well, since the new GTX 1050 Ti is sitting right under $500, I guess we should probably look into that one, shouldn't we?

I just want to make sure nobody gets the wrong idea here—those four RTX 3090s aren't actually being used for mining; they're strictly for rendering work...😬

If you pick up an RX 580 for around $450, you're looking at a six-month return on investment, wouldn't you agree? Of course, the real gamble is whether anyone can even predict what the profitability of mining will look like six months down the road.

Since the latest versions of Premiere Pro support GPU-based video encoding, wouldn't that i7 paired with a GTX 1060 actually outperform the Ryzen when it comes to export speeds?

Now, from what I understand, Shotcut doesn't really take advantage of the GPU, and while PowerDirector supposedly does, they aren't quite as widely used, so there isn't a ton of data out there regarding how well they handle GPU acceleration for effects. It makes you wonder, though—why would someone choose PowerDirector over one of the more heavy-duty, industry-standard options like Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve?

Oh, man, I know exactly what you mean; that’s precisely what happens to me whenever my PC gives up the ghost because I was messing around with my GPU overclock settings.

I dropped by that guy's place today, and he’s actually sitting on four RTX 3090s now. ☕ I guess if you’ve got the cash to burn, supply shortages just don't seem to apply to you, right?

I'm looking for something for Photoshop work and maybe some light, low-spec gaming every now and then.
My biggest priority is making sure it doesn't absolutely wreck my eyes.
Right now, I'm stuck using this ancient LG that makes my eyes feel like they've been through a heavy-duty welding session...

I'm not quite following you there; isn't it true that every monitor comes with brightness controls? It's not like that feature is set in stone, right?🤷

The Puget article doesn't actually list the 3800X, which is why I mentioned it, but you can find one for around $310, making it an even better deal... In my opinion, though, I wouldn't really recommend dropping down to a 6-core processor; isn't that just asking for trouble given what you're trying to achieve?
Since 32" 4K monitors aren't exactly cheap, wouldn't it make more sense to put that extra cash toward a high-quality display instead?

Based on the info in that link, I’m starting to think the 5800X isn't actually the best value here... wouldn't it make more sense to go with the R7 3800XT instead? It's sitting at around $340, while the 5800X is pushing up to $450, so why pay the extra premium if you don't have to?

Daniel Robinson59 said:The link is actually for an Austrian site (not German)...I live in Austria, so that's why.

By the way, I read somewhere that for editing 4K video, you really need a graphics card with at least 6GB of VRAM (which seems to be the standard recommendation everywhere)...so if that's true, this 4GB option might be a non-starter right from the beginning.

I don't think I'll be stacking a mountain of effects just yet, though I am still learning the ropes in Premiere Pro, and I feel like every time I learn something new, I want to try it out... so who knows what I'll be doing in a few months! It might actually be smart to secure some stronger components early on. Since I don't play games, and I highly doubt 8K will become a standard anytime soon like 4K did, I'm thinking this setup could easily last me 7 or 8 years without any issues.

p.s. Yeah, I realized the article was unavailable too... I didn't pay much attention to it because usually, when something is out of stock at Best Buy, they just pull it from the search results entirely.

I actually moved away from Premiere, so I haven't kept up with its current GPU memory requirements. I was just trying to help you save some cash, but you're right—that gap between 4GB and 6GB could be the deciding factor. While 4GB is definitely not enough when you're working in Resolve for 4K, keep in mind that Resolve relies heavily on the GPU, unlike Premiere does. If you go with a 1660 Ti, you should probably look for a used 2060 Super instead.

As for the processor, given your budget, maybe you should check out the CPU recommendations in this article:

So, do I really need to go that big or expensive when it comes to the graphics card? I was thinking maybe a beefy processor and plenty of RAM would be enough to get the job done without breaking the bank...

Why are you linking to a German retailer? Are you shopping from overseas?

If those were truly available at that price point, I would tell you to grab one immediately.

How much the GPU actually matters is really up to your specific workflow, isn't it? It all comes down to how many effects you're stacking in Premiere Pro and which ones you prefer to use. While Premiere Pro isn't quite as dependent on the GPU as DaVinci Resolve is, if you start layering multiple heavy effects, you might find your CPU hitting a wall—especially since Adobe software isn't always perfectly optimized for multi-core processing....

But honestly, if you're currently running some kind of AMD APU, any plan involving an old GPU is probably going to fall short; in that case, even a GTX 1650 with 4GB would feel like a massive leap forward, and you can always upgrade later. Besides, does it really make sense to overspend on a high-end GPU right now when you could save that cash to invest in something much better down the road?

Honestly, you couldn't pick a worse time to be putting together a video editing rig given how messy the whole GPU market is right now, between the supply issues and those ridiculous price hikes. If you're looking for the bare minimum, you'd probably end up settling for something like a 3060Ti, but even then, that's going to eat up at least half your entire budget—assuming you can even find one in stock at a reasonable price.

I'm seeing the exact same thing on my end, running an ASUS Prime X370 motherboard paired with an AMD Radeon RX 580. It feels like there might be a pattern here, though it doesn't seem to happen every single time; I suppose I'd have to keep a close eye on it for a while to see if I can actually spot a consistent pattern.
