And none of those 8GB options seem worth it for $333...

I spent this past weekend swapping my GTX 960 4GB into the rig that houses an RX 580, but I've run into a bit of a snag. When they both start pulling power during heavier tasks, the PSU just shuts down entirely—it's hitting that safety trigger. It’s happening even though I’ve undervolted the RX 580 so it sits at about 25% power usage while waiting on the 960 to catch up. My watt meter shows the whole system is drawing somewhere around 450-460W, and that's without the CPU even breaking a sweat or hitting 25% utilization. Can you imagine the chaos if I tried running dual RX 580 cards? 😲 At this point, it looks like I'll need to invest in a beefy new power supply along with a decent 8GB card, which are currently priced way higher than they should be. Is this project even worth the headache?
@Robin Ruiz5/">@@Robin Ruiz5: How exactly are you experiencing Dolby Atmos? Are we talking about a dedicated home theater setup or are you using headphones? If you're going the headphone route, it might be worth looking into the quality of the motherboard's onboard audio section—specifically which chipset it uses and how well they've isolated the audio components from the rest of the board's interference.

Andrew Fox74 said:Good luck with that. Right now, any card with 8GB or more is basically useless for mining purposes, which explains why the prices are so high—you can bet that seller definitely made a profit at that price point. It’s a tough situation, but that’s just how it is; if you could settle for a 3GB or 4GB version, I think you’d have a much easier time finding something available.

Unfortunately, I really can't make 4GB work, and while maybe a 6GB card would suffice, it couldn't be an Nvidia card because I run into specific issues with them, and I simply can't afford to throw money away on a "maybe."
Why would miners even want 8GB cards?

Yeah, the listing mentioned it was modified so the TDP stays under 100W. It’s the 8GB model, which is exactly what I need to get the job done. Too bad the ad isn't up anymore, right? 🤷

I spotted a listing on eBay for two Radeon RX 480 cards—specifically those AMD models with the blower style cooling—that come with a flashed BIOS optimized for mining, supposedly featuring undervolting and tweaked memory timings. Does anyone know how much of a headache that BIOS might actually be, or is it possible to override those settings using AMD Wattman, or are they essentially hardcoded into the card now? He’s asking $567 per card. Honestly, I can't wrap my head around paying that much; I have a feeling he'll end up dropping the price once he realizes he's trying to sell a blower design to someone like me who knows exactly why a specific setup is needed in the first place.
Used PC builds: What are they worth? in Desktops ·
If this card actually had an extra 4GB of VRAM, I would have snatched it up in a heartbeat—honestly, it’s easily my favorite RX 580 I've ever come across.

Actually, I think the real headache with low resolution shows up more in text than it does when you're watching videos or playing games. Though, if you're just doing standard office work, does it even really matter whether things look perfectly smooth or not?

I’m currently using a Dell UltraSharp 32, which has a slightly higher pixel density—about 91 ppi compared to 81—and honestly, I don't find it bothersome at all. Besides, if you end up mounting the monitor on a wall, it'll likely be far enough away from your eyes that the difference won't even be noticeable compared to having it right on your desk.

Here is a little trick: try sitting back from your current monitor at the distance suggested by this calculator: https://www.designcompaniesranked.co...s-this-retina/ to see what the effective density would feel like if it were 81 ppi, and then you can decide for yourself if it actually bugs you.

No, I was actually talking about rendering in Octane.

I heard through the grapevine that the colleague who picked up those two 3090s ended up offloading all his old 1080s and 2080s at once, clearly to some local crypto miner. It really does seem like the mining craze hasn't lost its momentum just yet, wouldn't you agree?
But there's no way he'd be willing to part with his used 1080ti under these current market conditions for anything less than $667...☕

darkmason94 said:Is it actually worth buying dedicated surround sound headphones instead of just sticking with stereo when I'm watching movies (downloads) labeled as 5.1?

Not really, because why spend extra when you can just use free Dolby Atmos or Spatial Audio, or even grab the Dolby Laboratories tech for about $22? If I were you, I'd definitely go with those first.

What really gets under my skin is the fact that they only sell these things as part of a complete rig. I can't help but wonder if we'll finally see them start selling individual components once this current craze dies down?

Timothy Kim60 said:Honestly, what is there to say about COVID? Maybe it had some kind of impact, but let's be real—the real issue here is the mining situation. Isn't that where the actual trouble lies? Has anyone else been following the news about how Nvidia is apparently selling massive quantities of hardware directly to miners? It really makes you wonder about the direction they're taking with their distribution strategy lately, doesn't it?And that’s without even considering the possibility of them actually hitting the retail shelves.

Impeach Jensen Huang !!!😁

Gamer Meld is dropping some pretty heavy news following their recent interviews with Nvidia and AMD: don't hold your breath for a GPU market recovery anytime soon, because we likely won't see any relief before the middle of the year. Even worse, instead of prices dropping, we might actually be looking at further hikes... According to Lisa Su, the primary culprit behind all this chaos is the WHO.

wiredotter14, are you doing alright over there? I'm really hoping it's just some weird glitch with your keyboard. ☕

So, this landed right in my inbox today:

Honestly, I don't think I've ever encountered anything quite this bizarre. It’s some sort of weekend special featuring "professional" GPUs—which, let’s be real, are pretty much useless nowadays—on a general merchandise website. Where on earth did they get the idea to pull this together? And more importantly, who exactly are they hoping to sell these to?

Thanks, Momcovi, but this RX 570 only has 4GB of VRAM, so it won't really run my games properly; honestly, the price would only be worth it if it had 8GB, bringing it closer to the 800-$300 range. As for the Armor, I need to give it some more thought because I'm worried about the price point, especially since I've heard they tend to run quite hot, and I was thinking of pairing it with my current RX 580... though I noticed the link says it's $367???

I'm just sitting here pulling my hair out. I keep waiting, watching the listings for an RX 570 at $467, but while I'm waiting, they vanish only to pop back up later at $533, and now the cheapest RX 580 I can find is sitting at 2000.
Best CPU cooler for AM3? in Hardware ·
@wiredotter14: You're probably looking at an upgrade because the stock fan is driving you crazy with the noise, or maybe you've noticed your CPU temperatures hitting levels that just don't feel right at base clock speeds. If you happen to be running one of those FX processors paired with a motherboard that has a bit of a weaker VRM setup, wouldn't it make sense to grab a top-down cooler? Something like that Arctic model mentioned above could really help out by blowing air directly over the VRM components to keep everything stable.
New PC build + monitor for $1,200? in Desktops ·
wiredotter14 said:I'm not quite following—what do you mean when you say the tiers are bad?

It’s not that the categories themselves are bad, it’s just how they break down when you look closely. For instance, the Intel Core i5-10400 is really just an entry-level chip from the previous generation, and if you look at the GPU landscape, once you move past the RTX 1650, there are still four distinct levels of Nvidia hardware above it while there's only one level below... so in that specific sense, I was just thinking of it as being near the bottom of the barrel, if that makes sense? $2667...

@Adam Moore3/">@@Adam Moore3: I wasn't criticizing your choices at all; I'm sure you picked out the best possible options within that budget...
