I was watching some highlights from last season and it got me thinking about how much weight we put on those big offseason moves. Every year, the media goes crazy about that one specific player who is supposed to be the "missing piece" to a championship puzzle. It’s easy to get swept up in the hype, especially when the talent is undeniable, but I always find myself a bit skeptical.
In my experience watching sports, a superstar can definitely raise the floor of a roster, but I wonder if it's enough to actually change the outcome of a deep playoff run. You can have the most dominant force on one side of the ball, but if the rest of the unit doesn't click or if the scheme doesn't fit, it feels like a lot of pressure to put on one person's shoulders. It feels like we're looking for a silver bullet every single summer.
Do you guys think a single elite addition can really turn a contender into a champion, or is it mostly just marketing to get us excited for training camp?
I know... Narkic was the real deal... though he definitely has his moments when he’s trying too hard...
I used to judge girls who dated guys like him, thinking they were just being foolish... but once you're actually in that situation, you realize how wrong you were. It's one thing to watch something you love fall apart right in front of you while you're powerless to stop it. And it's even worse when he can't even help himself. He’s a genuinely good man; he’d never let me down or anything like that. He even told me he’d rather die than hurt me. I just want to help him, but I’m at a loss. I’ll be back in that city in about a month for work for a few months. I think I'll keep my distance until I can figure out if he's spiraling again—which is what it feels like. Once I know, maybe I'll try to reach out, if he'll let me. Just strictly on a friendship basis.
Here’s the situation...
I’m dealing with an ex-boyfriend, and honestly, I have no idea what to make of any of this. I am desperately asking for help—any advice at all, no matter how small, would mean the world to me. He spent years deep in addiction—heroin, cocaine, speed, weed—basically anything he could get his hands on. He was smoking and snorting heroin, and obviously injecting it too, for years on end. After all that, he supposedly quit the heroin (he was in a coma for a year and a half), but now he’s using heptanone and can’t go a single day without smoking weed (at least two joints). When he was on heroin, he did absolutely anything to fund his habit... and I mean *anything*. I didn't enter his life until after he had allegedly cleaned himself up, so I don't know what his life looked like before me, but I know he was a mess. He would disappear from home for long stretches, hung out with a shady crowd, and just constantly made terrible decisions. From what I could tell, I was the first "normal" girl he’d been with—someone who wasn't a user, though I'd occasionally smoke a joint with him (thank God, not anymore!). Now here is the problem: we broke up a year ago. Since then, I haven't seen or heard from him because we live in different cities, but rumors keep reaching me. People are saying he suddenly came into a massive amount of money and has completely changed. He’s back to hanging out with that same sketchy crew and going out constantly (which he never used to do). What confuses me most is his style; he’s suddenly very well-dressed. When we were together, he dressed normally, but when he was heavily using heroin and dealing, he actually dressed quite sharply too. It feels strange—I read somewhere that people do that to hide the truth, thinking that if they look polished, they won't be seen as just another junkie. Maybe I'm just overthinking this, but it’s eating at me. I keep wondering if I should try to go back, try to fix things, and help him, even though everyone tells me to run for the hills if I don't want my life to turn into a living hell. On top of that, I have a question: is it possible he pushed me away on purpose just so he wouldn't "corrupt" me? When we broke up, he was dead drunk, crying, telling me he would ruin me if I stayed, and that he didn't deserve me—all while insisting he loved me. And one more somewhat intimate question: during sex, he would sometimes lose his erection suddenly and couldn't finish. Is that a side effect of the heptanone, or is it because he never truly stopped using drugs, or is it some lasting consequence? Who knows? Please, I need help. This is incredibly important to me. I want to help him, but I have no idea how.
p.s. If anyone can describe what a needle mark looks like... I saw a photo where someone had tiny dark spots on their arms—sort of bluish-black dots. Is that what it looks like?
HELP ME!!!!!
