The impact of a great mentor
in Fans ·
I was thinking about this today after seeing an old photo of my high school track coach. It’s funny how someone who isn't even in your family can end up shaping your entire worldview. You think you're just showing up to practice to run laps or work on your fundamentals, but you're actually learning how to be a person.
It feels like those kinds of figures are becoming rarer these days. Nowadays, everything is so transactional. You go through the motions, you get the grade or the win, and you move on. But there was always that one specific person who saw something in you that you hadn't even realized was there yet. They pushed you not because they wanted a trophy, but because they actually cared about your character.
When someone like that leaves us, it really hits the community hard. It’s like a pillar of the town just disappears, and you realize how much of the local culture was actually held up by their shoulders. It makes you wonder how many of us are actually "successful" because of a coach or a teacher who believed in us when we were just kids.
Who was that one person in your life who changed your trajectory?
