GPU Buying Guide - (Read first post) in Desktops ·
Hey there.
Looking for some advice. Time caught up with me and my PC, but I still want to play.

I'm planning to pick up a GPU for about $833. Any recommendations?

I was browsing Best Buy and saw some 25% discounts on things like an RX 570, specifically this one:

But when I try to compare them on Google—trying to act like an expert—it seems like the 570 priced at $1133 versus the 1060 priced at $867 shows the 1060 is generally the better bet.

So, which way do I go?

Ultimately, I just need a solid recommendation for a card in the $833
range.

Current specs: i5 2500k
HD 7850
XFX 450W
8 GB RAM

Thanks.
Can't install macOS on my Dell laptop in IT Support ·
My new Dell ROG GL arrived via Instagram, and I’m hitting a wall trying to install macOS.
Basically, I start the installation, pick my language, select the drive... everything seems fine. It starts extracting and shows the progress bar from 0 to 100%. Then, it reboots automatically. But right after those Dell splash screens, it hangs indefinitely on the macOS logo where it says "Starting macOS." The animation keeps swirling, but nothing happens. I let it sit there for half an hour. Nothing.

I have a legitimate copy of Windows 7, but I’ve also tried two different cracked versions. All three attempts resulted in the exact same failure: the system reboots and then gets stuck staring at that loading logo.

Any advice? Am I doing something wrong, or could this be a hardware issue with the laptop itself?

The laptop originally came with FreeDOS, but I wiped that during the formatting process while attempting the install, so now there isn't even a DOS environment left.

Thanks.

Setting things to High looks decent, but you have to kill AA just to make it playable. It sits right on that edge where it's barely functional... once you toggle AA back on, the frame rate drops to a stuttering 20-25 fps. Unplayable.

So, thanks for the input. R9 280X is sold.

crimsonstag84 said:At minimum, an R9 280X ($650). Though, is a 60-80% jump actually worth it? I’d personally aim for the RX 580, but you’ll definitely need a beefier power supply for that.

Will it run GTA 5 on High settings? Using an R9 280X—and does that card need a bigger power supply?

Here’s what I currently have sitting in my rig:
Intel Core i5-4590
8 GB RAM
EVGA 550W

GTX 750 Ti 2GB

Which GPU is actually capable of handling modern titles on Ultra settings?
Ideally looking for a "best buy" if one exists.

Something budget-friendly, obviously, but still able to push new games at High or Ultra.

I assume the rest of the build is still decent enough and doesn't need an upgrade, but if you think otherwise, feel free to suggest alternatives.
Much appreciated for the response.
Hi, I'm trying to hook up an old Toshiba laptop to my new LCD TV.

The issue? The laptop only has a VGA port. I happened to spot a VGA to SCART cable today and picked it up, thinking that would be the fix. It wasn't. When I connect everything, there's just no image—the screen stays stuck on "no signal," even though I've set the TV to the correct AV1 input (the one marked with the SCART icon). On the laptop side, I'm running Windows XP. I've cycled through all the display settings—monitor, TV, whatever—but nothing works. No picture at all.

Can anyone point me in the right direction regarding settings or hardware?

The laptop:

The TV:

Thanks.

Edit: Is there any other way to link a VGA laptop to a modern LCD TV? What's the deal with those HDMI-to-USB cables? A bit lost here.

The MS Phoenix case without a power supply mentioned by Robert Rodriguez2... $60, how much does the case actually matter in this whole setup? I see them ranging from $333 up to $180; surely it’s about more than just looks? Of course, if the MS Phoenix really does the job, then there's no issue.

Anyway, thanks to everyone for the quick replies.

Futur? How does it actually stack up against ADM?

For gaming. Basically, I want to squeeze every bit of performance out of my titles.

Ideally an Intel processor paired with a Radeon card.

Just the tower itself—no peripherals needed.

Edit: I put this together by pulling ideas from other people's requests. Is this decent, or should I swap something out?
1 x Intel Core i5-4460 (3.20GHz,1MB,6MB,84 W,1150) Box
1 x Asrock H81M-HDS, s1150, Intel H81, M-ATX, dual Channel 2 xDDR3
1 x Zalman Z9 PLUS mid tower case. 207(W) x 464(H) x 504(D)mm.
1 x Fortron 500W Hyper Power Supply, PPA5005003, 12cm fan
1 x LG GH24NS DVD burner, DVD±RW, 24x DVD±R ,8x DL , 40x CD-R
1 x DDR3 4GB (1x4GB) Crucial, 1600MHz CL11
1 x XFX R7-265A-CNF4, AMD Radeon R7 265 2GB DDR5 Display
Drawing nonsense on my ballot? in Miscellaneous ·
So, my inner circle and I were grabbing coffee when we realized—apparently, none of us actually follow the standard procedure for marking ballots... 😵

Anyway, it sparked this debate: does the ballot still count? If you neatly circle a candidate's number and maybe scribble their name in the corner, is that invalid or what?

I did a quick search on Google for the official rules. Under the section regarding "invalid ballots," it basically just says your intent has to be clear. So, based on that, can we basically doodle whatever we want as long as they know who we voted for?

Coffee sounds better. ;D

So, I think I'll just go with the Smartic suggestion.

MSI AMD A88X-G43 motherboard
AMD Athlon II X4 760K processor

Basically, you've got that setup paired with a Spira Kepler Rev.2 cooler.

Didn't want to start a whole new thread.

I have an unopened Intel stock cooler lying around, plus an old Zalman 7000—just a fan, really—with this obnoxious blue LED light. 😁.
By the way, I assume it's obvious: my goal is to squeeze every bit of life out of this dust-collector. I don't care if it can't even run Crysis 2. I'm fine just letting it sit there looking pretty. Everyone has their own brand of madness.
That’s why I’m bothering everyone with these trivial questions.

Anyway.
1. To get straight to it: is that Zalman actually capable of handling an overclock?
2. Based on these specs http://www.zalman.com/global/product...ad.php?Idx=311 will it fit an AM3 socket? I have the support clip.

Thanks for all the feedback and advice regarding the motherboard and power supply purchase.

I get it. I'm fully aware I could pick up a much better PSU to match a newer card, but I already have a killer rig; this one's just meant to be mounted on the wall... besides, that wasn't the question.😁

Anyway, as David Sanders4 mentioned...

Regarding the power supply, Timothy Kim60 was asking about a specific model... the Chieftec GPS 550 ABA.

What’s the worst-case scenario if the wattage falls short?
Can I just try my luck—if it runs, it runs, and if not, I buy a new PSU? Or is there a risk of something actually blowing up? Is the hardware more at risk than the power unit itself?

An edit: back before last year, I tested an overclocked 8800 on Battlefield 3. Paired with an Intel Core i5-2500, it hit 40 fps on medium settings with AA turned off. I figure upgrading to two cards might bump that up by maybe 10-15 fps or allow for some high settings.
Single player ran on high without any issues. It pretty much debunked those "claims" that it wouldn't run at all or that you'd be stuck on low settings.
Mass Effect 3 also handled high settings just fine. And that was a card from 2008.
In the meantime, I "acquired" a second card from a friend, so here we are.

I might be overcomplicating things here, if you don't mind :P. Just looking for some confirmation on a few parts + motherboard, CPU, and power supply.

I have two 8800 GTS cards just collecting dust after all these years. I was thinking about putting together a secondary PC just for fun—something for LAN parties when the guys come over.

I don't want to go overboard with the spending... though I'll pay if necessary.

First off, does the brand of the graphics cards affect SLI? The specs should be identical, but one is an Albatron and the other is from Gigabyte.
As far as I know, that shouldn't be an issue, right?

Anyway.

-I have an old, large Chieftec GX-01B case; everything should fit in there.
-RAM: 8GB DDR3
-GPUs: 2x 8800 GTS 640MB

So,
-Power supply: An old, functional Chieftec 550W from 2008. It worked fine for 3 or 4 years before I pulled it out.
Would that be enough? Theoretically, shouldn't 550W handle those two cards?

And I still need a CPU and a motherboard.
The PC would be strictly for gaming.
Could I find a decent AMD 4x processor and a matching motherboard for around $150-$200?

Any recommendations? Main thing is that the board supports >>SLI
Thanks.
Which PSU should I buy? in Desktops ·
crimsonstag84 said:That board has poor bandwidth on the second PCI-e slot (running at x4), so any Crossfire scaling is going to be significantly handicapped.

I'm not sure I follow your logic. Are you suggesting that setting up Crossfire isn't even worth the effort?

And yes, the PSU is from the link provided above.
Which PSU should I buy? in Desktops ·
So, I'm looking to pick up a second graphics card and run them in Crossfire. The model I have in mind is an AMD Radeon HD 7850.
My motherboard is an ASUS P8P67 that supports Crossfire; the rest of the build is an i5 2500K with 8 GB of RAM.

The sticking point is the power supply. My EVGA Core edition 450 w is relatively new—only about six months old—but is 450 W actually enough for a setup like this?

I’ve already run this by a few friends, and they all insisted that 450 W is nowhere near enough. Now I'm left wondering if they're right.

Thanks.
Exfoliative Keratolysis
I spent all day digging around at it today, and it looks like I’ve got a case of this. From what I can gather, there isn't a cure. Apparently, the peeling is triggered by moisture—in my case, sweaty hands—and likely the fact that I'm spending most of my summer at the beach.
😢
So, I’m 21. For about 7 or 8 years now—maybe even longer—my palms have been acting up. It follows a specific cycle every spring and summer.

It starts mid-spring as the weather warms up. My palms start sweating. A little at first, then more and more as the temperature climbs.

By late spring, my palms are constantly damp. They sweat excessively; I’m perpetually wiping them on something.

At the start of summer, the sweating seems to taper off, but then the irritation kicks in. A stinging sensation.
The skin feels flushed and hot. Almost like it's sitting over a low flame.

By mid-summer, the sweating and irritation stop entirely. But the trade-off? My palms become incredibly dry. Not a single drop of moisture left. Literally like paper. From one extreme to the other.
And they start peeling.

The peeling looks terrible, though it isn't painful.
This lasts until the end of summer, when all the old skin finally sheds.

Then the "new" palms arrive. Normal. Soft. Like a baby's.

Everything is fine until next spring, when the whole cycle resets.

I visited a doctor at a local clinic last year, right during the phase where my hands had already started peeling. She prescribed some cream for dry skin... since that was the state they were in at the time.
I tried to explain the full progression—how it starts with the sweating—but she didn't seem to grasp what was actually happening.
Her verdict? Sensitive skin. She told me to just use the cream she provided.

I used it. No luck. The skin still peeled. I found some ointment over the winter, so about a month ago I started using calendula, but it hasn't done anything. Right now, my palms are stinging and wet, just like every other year.

Anyone have an idea what this might be? Could it be an allergy? Who should I talk to?
