Ashley Bishop43 said:Hi,

I have a rhinoplasty scheduled for June.

How long do I actually need to be careful with my nose after surgery? I have a young child who loves to poke at me and pull on things, so I'm worried about how this is going to work out. I know I need to be cautious, but I want to know for how long.

Thanks for any help.

You definitely need to be extra careful for two months.
About a month and a half after my own procedure, my younger son accidentally bumped my head into something. I saw stars for a second. The pain was unbearable.
Luckily, my nose stayed intact.😁
I have nothing but praise for the Holy Spirit hospital and the entire ENT staff.
Especially for my surgeon, who happens to be away at the moment.😁
redranger82 said:Alright, what about the CT scan? Do I need to schedule that myself? My doctor mentioned I'd be doing it at Vinogradski Hospital (though I don't live in Chicago).

As far as I know, you have to get a referral for a CT.
In my case, there wasn't any bumpiness or unevenness after the surgery; the nose just went through phases of being more or less swollen.

I’m not sure if it’s too early to call it. They just pulled the mold yesterday. 😢

Obviously it's too early to judge, considering you just removed the mold.
The nose shape will shift every single day.
copperraven5 said:How do you actually coordinate with your surgeon regarding the end goal (verbal descriptions, photos, or something else entirely)?

During my last consultation, my surgeon walked me through a computer simulation of my nose—showing me what I had then versus his vision for the result.
I honestly thought he was dreaming, but looking in the mirror now, I have exactly the nose he drew up. 😁😁
analogotter43 said:How are you guys cleaning out your nostrils? Or at least getting rid of this constant mucus drainage? Is it normal for it to keep leaking non-stop, even three days after having the packing removed? My doctor told me not to blow my nose or use saline rinses because I still have internal packing, but I'm worried about everything clotting up inside. :/

(I'm doing exactly what I was told, obviously, but I just want to know if this much drainage is normal, since he told me it would stop within a day.)

I didn't have any internal packing, but during those first few days, I rolled up some non-sterile gauze into a little tube, dampened it with saline, and gently cleaned the entrance of my nose. I also used Q-tips to pick up whatever I could reach at the top.
briskorca352 said:Did you peel that skin off your nose yourself, or did it just fall off on its own after a while?😕😕?

I didn't engage in any violent behavior. I was just washing up and applying moisturizer, nothing more.

I noticed a small protrusion at the opening of my right nostril. Is that actually normal?

It’s perfectly normal to have some sutures left. If any remain after they've been removed, they'll eventually work their way out on their own.

Casey Kelly2 said:Hey everyone. I had nose surgery about two weeks ago to fix a deviated septum and remove a hump. Right now, it looks great and I’m happy with the results, but my doctor mentioned that the final shape won't really show up for another six months once the swelling goes down and the bone settles. My question is: will everything actually STAY straight once the healing process is finished? Assuming I'm careful and avoid any impacts, obviously.

Based on my own experience, I can confirm the nose is perfectly straight—no bumps, no irregularities whatsoever. It held its shape even after taking a pretty significant blow to the head. 👍

Personally, I found the shower pressure too aggressive near my nose, so I avoided direct contact. I just did a quick, light wash.
Luckily, I didn't deal with any breakouts, but my skin felt incredibly dry—it was actually peeling around my eyes and my nose.
As for that numbness above the upper lip and the awkward, frozen smile, everything eventually settles back to normal.😁
Melissa Martinez5 said:I want to know if anyone here has had nose surgery due to breathing issues.
My husband has struggled with breathing through his nose for years now.
It always feels completely blocked.
From what I've read, surgery seems to be the only real fix for this kind of thing.

I underwent nose surgery early this year because of breathing difficulties and constant headaches. Once I was cleared, I decided to go ahead with a cosmetic correction too. 😁
Not only can I breathe properly now and those headaches have vanished, but I honestly couldn't be happier with how my nose looks.
Gary Wells2 said:Seriously, what is going on with these bumps???

I didn't get them and I'm hoping I won't, so there isn't much you can do for me here.😕>
Angela Wright4 said:I tried to edit this but it won't let me: it hurts. Even just wiping my nose gently after washing it is painful. I dread having to blow my nose...

Does anyone else deal with pain a month out from surgery? The swelling seems to have gone down by now.

I don't feel much pain when touching it lightly or cleaning it, but the tip still feels wooden, even though I'm nearly four months post-op. If I apply any real pressure, it hurts right where the break was.
The other day, a kid accidentally headbutted the tip of my nose, and I honestly thought I was going to pass out from the pain.
darkgardener9 said:Thanks for the reply. 🙂 Glad you can breathe better now; sounds like you didn't have to suffer through too much. 🙂
I'm just wondering—I know there's still swelling, but after a month, does the nose actually look smaller than it did before the surgery?

The nose looks smaller immediately once the splint comes off, regardless of any swelling.😁😁
The second they pulled the packing out, I could finally breathe through my nose normally,
and they usually take those out about eight days after the surgery.
I think I started moving the stitches around after about 14 days.
As for bruising, I had quite a bit of it, and it stayed visible for about three weeks.
My nose is still swollen, even though it’ll be four months since the procedure
but honestly, I'm probably the only one who notices anyway.
The difference from how my nose looked before was obvious the moment they removed the mold.
electricangler32 said:It’s been exactly two months since my septorhinoplasty! Thank God and the surgeon—breathing is great and I actually look better.🙂
Hopefully, it stays this way!

Glad to hear everything turned out well for you.🙂
steelfalcon5 said:Giving birth was a hundred times easier than what I’m dealing with right now. I had surgery yesterday at 11 AM for a deviated septum, sinus issues, and nasal pyramid narrowing. I look like a character from a horror movie. My throat is killing me from the intubation, too. I actually went to the ER just for an injection, but it barely helped. My nostrils feel like they're burning with acid. The pain and cramping were so bad I ended up vomiting blood. My husband can't even believe the state I'm in!!

Man, I am so sorry you're going through that... I didn't realize how easy my own procedure was compared to yours.
Jerry Myers3 said:Does anyone know the current wait time for surgery through Medicare?

My first appointment was set for two months out, but I ended up caught in a strike, so they pushed it back another month and a half.
cosmicbadger83 said:It’s been six months for me, and one side still swells up more than the other when I wake up. For a while, I actually thought I had developed a bump.

I noticed the same thing—my nose looks thick and shiny in the morning.
I took a photo the other day to show someone,
but unfortunately, it was early in the morning, so you can really see it in the picture.😢
In a few days, it will be three months since my Operation,
and I’m losing my mind today because the tip is still hard as a board,
with zero signs that it'll ever soften up or feel natural.🙂
But whatever, I’m happy with how it looks,
so I’m just telling myself that the day will eventually come
when the tip isn't thick and wooden.
That gel compress was a lifesaver for me too. Luckily, the hospital had plenty of them on hand, so they were applying it constantly.
frozenpilot60 said:I'm heading in tomorrow for my rhinoplasty with Dr. Tončić, and I am absolutely terrified.😁
Honestly, I still can't believe I'm actually doing this.
I've wanted this for a long time, and it felt like now or never.
It was now.
By this time tomorrow, the Operation will be over.
Part of me is scared of my own ambitions.

There's nothing to fear. Just be brave and get that new nose you want.🙂
I had my follow-up yesterday and everything is fine.
Thankfully, that impact to the head didn't cause any damage.
Both the doctor and I are extremely happy with the results.😍
