Sorry for bumping up my older thread like this...
I really wanted to give a quick shout-out to the guys who helped me pick out my parts.
So, here's what I ended up going with:
msi h81-p33
g1840
8gb crucial (single stick)
If I remember correctly, the total came out to about $331 at Best Buy.
I’m running my old sapphire hd 6570 2gb ddr3 on this build
And just for anyone stressing over whether their rig can actually handle Grand Theft Auto V—mine does it just fine on medium settings at 1080p. It ran just as smoothly on my old Athlon X2 2.7ghz with 4gb of ram. Honestly, if you aren't a hardcore gamer, you don't need anything more than this...
Thanks again, everyone.
So, I'm looking at picking up an ASUS Prime H81M-K with an LGA 1150 socket—supports DDR3 up to 1600MHz...
I've got my eye on an 8GB RAM kit, but I'm hitting a bit of a snag because the MSI website doesn't explicitly list them as compatible. It's a Corsair Vengeance LPX kit, PC-14900, 8 GB, HX318C10FB/8 DDR3 1866MHz...
Someone mentioned that if the motherboard can't handle the full 1866MHz, the memory will just downclock itself to whatever the board's maximum speed is. Is there any truth to that... and would this specific RAM actually work on this board?
Alright, thanks.
I managed to track down some 8GB Corsair DDR3 PC1600 RAM— $129
seems like a pretty fair price to me...
Alright, I think I’ll stick with my initial gut feeling and go with MSI. I actually tracked down a unit at Best Buy for $98.
The only thing bugging me now... I was reading online that the G1820 CPU only supports memory up to 1333MHz, so I'm a bit confused... can I actually install 1600MHz RAM without any issues?
They all come with a standard three-year warranty. When you look at the specs, MSI and Gigabyte support up to 1024MB of graphics, while ASRock goes up to 1792MB. Aside from a few extra bucks in the price tag, that’s pretty much the only real difference...
I could use some advice here...
Should I go with the MSI H81M-P33, the ASRock H81M-DGS R2, or maybe the Gigabyte H81M-S2V?
Alright, I suppose that covers everything for now... now I just need to find some buyers for these extra components I don't really need anymore... 🤦
Not bad at all.
mbo:
the pricier option
MSI H81M-E33,1150,D3,S3,U3,HDMI,VGA,mATX
or
the budget-friendly choice
MSI H81M-E33 iH81 (S1150, DDR3, SATA II,SATA III,PS/2,USB2.0,USB3.0,LAN,Audio Line-In,Audi
Will my Fortron FSP350-60THN-P actually be able to handle the load?
Alright, thanks. Also, could someone please double-check if this CPU is actually compatible with that motherboard? I’m a bit out of my depth when it comes to all these Intel designations... 😵
Hmm... an interesting approach, though I'm not sure where you were tracking prices. I've been checking Best Buy lately since it's my local go-to, and that setup would run me about $333
.
Micro Center: ASRock H81M-DGS R2 $120
CPU: Intel Celeron G1820 box 299 $100
RAM: 2x2GB kit $83
I'm not usually much of an Intel fan... but even I have to admit, this doesn't look half bad...
ASRock 960 GC-GS FX
is the motherboard I’m looking at buying—not what I currently have. My current one finally gave up the ghost... so yeah, I need a replacement. I’m really not planning on using Craigslist again; I picked up my current board there and it barely lasted two months before dying... I just need something reliable. This PC isn't for hardcore gaming anyway, just everyday stuff... browsing the web, downloading files, watching movies and things like that...
😢PS: With my current processor, GPU, and RAM, I was actually able to run GTA V, so the power is definitely there... I just need a working motherboard.
1. So, I'm on the hunt for a motherboard that can handle my current setup while leaving the door open for a decent upgrade down the road... My budget is sitting around $167.
I've been scouring the web and think I found a potential candidate.
It's the ASRock 960 GC-GS FX
What it supports:
Both DDR2 and DDR3—right now I'm running 2x2GB DDR2 sticks;
AM2+ and AM3+ CPUs—currently using an Athlon x2 7750 BE (AM2+);
Any thoughts?...
2. I'm currently using a Fortron FSP350-60THN-P
The real question is, will it actually power this specific build?
Mobo: ASRock 960 GC-GS FX
CPU: Athlon x2 7750BE (95W)
GPU: Sapphire 6570 2GB DDR3
RAM: 2x 2GB DDR2
Misc: 2x SATA HDDs, a DVD-RW drive, plus one cooler
Thanks.
Look, there’s nothing decent under $100. Before I go out and buy anything, I really need to confirm if the power supply is actually the culprit here... I’m running two processors—one is 1.8 GHz and the other is an Athlon Dual Core. On the dual core, it barely manages to boot up and hit the POST screen once in a blue moon before it just shuts down. As for the weaker one, I occasionally manage to get it through the POST and into Windows... but the second any kind of load hits the system, it just cuts out.
thanks...
Is this one any good?...

Alright, thanks a lot. I suppose I'm still looking for a bit more guidance... what should I actually be keeping an eye on when picking out a power supply? Which specific specs really matter?...
Alright, I follow you. But that part about the CPU only pulling 150W... it doesn't quite sit right with me, especially since my processor alone is rated at 95W.
Thanks for getting back to me, but could I get a little more clarification? Why would a 400W unit actually be a better bet than this 650W one?
edit:
Up until recently, I was running an Office Depot B400ATX
+3.3v at 28A
+5v at 40A
+12v at 17A
Maxing out at 220w on the +3.3v and +5v rails combined
With a total max of 380w across the +3.3v, +5v, and +12v rails
Giving me a total maximum capacity of 400w...
The radio setup works fine, but then the PC just died on me. I opened up the power supply and noticed some capacitors were bulging. I swapped them out, but it’s as if the configuration drains them too quickly... or rather, the PSU just can't recharge them fast enough...
I don't want to clutter things up by starting a whole new thread, so I'll just drop this here.
I'm looking for a power supply for the build listed below, ideally something budget-friendly. Any suggestions?
I was eyeing this one:
http://www.amazon.com/power-supply-ak...20-retail.aspxHere is the specs:
Gigabyte GA-M56S-S3
AMD Athlon II X2 7750 BE (2.7 GHz) AM2+
Sapphire HD 6570 2GB DDR3 PCI-E
2x 2GB PC2-6400 800MHz
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 320GB
Thanks.
