Would you happen to have an alternative download link for that software? I can't help but feel that particular website isn't exactly the most reliable source...
EDIT: Actually, never mind; I managed to navigate my way over to the page for the eighth version via the original link. My thanks to you.
Here are the results from a 100MB test, performed twice for consistency.

....It appears to me that I may be forced to replace this unit entirely... what are your thoughts on the matter?
Greetings, everyone... I find myself facing a rather peculiar dilemma. Whenever I shut down my machine, or transition it into sleep or hibernation mode, there is this distinct sound—almost as if an actuator arm or the head assembly were striking the outer casing of the motor spindle. This phenomenon occurred previously, subsided for a short duration, and has now resurfaced after only a few days. Does anyone happen to know what might be causing such a disturbance? Furthermore, along with that initial thud, there seems to be a sort of whistling sound emanating from the hard drive itself, if my hearing serves me correctly.
Here are the system specifications:
Intel Pentium Dual Core T4300
RAM: 4 GB (though only 2.93 GB is available... which is a separate grievance of mine 😁 )
Hard Drive👋Western Digital 320GB (WD Scorpio Blue)
I am more than willing to provide both video and audio recordings so you can hear the exact nature of the noise; however, I am unsure of the best method to share them, as I seem to be exceeding the attachment limits for all Print Screen uploads. If someone could advise me on how to proceed, perhaps we can resolve this issue promptly.
Sudden shutdowns... in IT Support ·
darkowl72 said:It’s possible the solder joints on the DC jack are failing. If they're loose, even a tiny nudge could cut power completely, which opens a massive can of worms for the rest of the hardware. Just be careful—if you mess with that connector too much, you might rip it right off the board. Re-soldering those things is a nightmare, and honestly, most of the time it's just impossible. You might want to take it to a repair shop to have them inspect and reinforce the connection before you end up with a dead laptop. Or just do it yourself if you actually know what you're doing...

Yes, that is certainly a possibility, but I find myself currently without any thermal paste, and I have no intention of reassembling the heatsink without it 😁... once I manage to locate some, I shall investigate further.

dustybadger902 said:Most laptops shut down because they're overheating, so you should probably check the fan—make sure it’s actually spinning and hasn't been choked out by dust. Another possibility is a faulty power adapter, maybe due to a loose connection in the cord or at the jack itself; honestly, I'd also bet your Lithium-ion battery has finally given up the ghost.

The battery has officially kicked the bucket; I verified it with a multimeter and everything seems fine, despite my repeated attempts to fix the cable near the jack. As far as dust is concerned, the laptop is pristine, and the fan is certainly spinning 😁 ...
now I am beginning to suspect the charger, yet it remains quite peculiar that the machine shuts down specifically when I shift the laptop's position... could it be a faulty connector? I suspect as much, but verifying that would require me to strip down the heatsink, and since I seem to have misplaced my thermal paste during a recent move, I find myself at a bit of a standstill. 😢

Sudden shutdowns... in IT Support ·
Lately, I have been grappling with an issue regarding my power supply—whether it be the charger, the Lithium-ion battery, or some other component within the power circuit. My laptop occasionally shuts down entirely without warning, regardless of whether it is running on the adapter or the battery itself. If one looks at the system tray icons, it reports that the battery is empty, yet simultaneously claims it is plugged in and not charging. Interestingly, the machine boots up perfectly fine without the battery, though over the last two days, it has abruptly cut out several times during the initial boot sequence. I attempted to uninstall the Microsoft Lithium-ion battery driver and restarted the system, which provided temporary relief, but this is a cycle I have had to repeat multiple times over the past forty-eight hours. I have tried booting without the battery and reinstalling the driver both with and without the battery present, but now the battery seems completely unresponsive. Curiously, a few days ago, after the system insisted the battery was depleted, I removed it, performed the driver uninstallation, and upon reinserting the battery, the system suddenly reported it was fully charged. Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of this ordeal is that the laptop becomes abnormally sluggish following these sudden shutdowns; everything lags and slows to a crawl until I perform several restarts or power cycles (despite having already cleaned the drive and run a defragmentation prior to the shutdown). I would appreciate any guidance you could offer, as I am quite concerned about potential hardware damage caused by these abrupt power losses. It appears the battery has failed, and I suspect there is a persistent driver conflict. When the battery is empty and the driver is removed, the device loses its ability to enter sleep or hibernation modes, whereas it functioned correctly before; thus, I find myself suspicious of the driver.

P.S. During these shutdowns, I occasionally hear a faint whistling sound, though I have yet to determine its exact origin.

Well, I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone who reached out and offered their assistance in my attempt to resolve this issue. I have since restored the device to its factory settings, and everything appears to be functioning perfectly once again. I cannot adequately express the relief I feel now that the audio has returned; after all, the speakers are truly impressive. It certainly isn't just some mediocre piece of hardware, considering it was a 😁 unit priced at around $500-$600. 👍 😁 :klap: 🙂

A simple oversight on my part, I suppose.

I have observed a rather peculiar discrepancy regarding my scheduled update dates; until just two days ago, my calendar clearly listed November 23rd, November 27th, and December 8th, yet by some inexplicable stroke of luck, the 23rd has vanished entirely, leaving only the latter two. Might this be an indication of a malicious intrusion? I have attempted to mitigate such fears by running a gauntlet of security software—including Norton, AVG, PC Cleaner, and Spybot Search & Destroy—yet the uncertainty remains. Upon inspecting the versioning of the specific program I suspected, I discovered it is merely intended to repair the Windows 8 Store and related components, which effectively rules it out as the culprit. This leaves me facing the unsettling possibility of a sophisticated virus that has managed to evade my various scanners, even though I ran them sequentially rather than simultaneously. I have already attempted to utilize Check Disk and SFC, which yielded nothing significant, though I did find that Winshell was corrupted and required a System Restore to rectify. Now, as I attempt to create a backup while the system is still functional, I am met with error 0x80042302; furthermore, attempts to activate Windows Defender via services.msc have failed, and a Realtek installation resulted in error 0x0000000D. Is it possible that the core integrity of the OS has been compromised beyond simple detection?

It seems my own setup isn't quite as outdated as one might assume; I am currently running an Intel Pentium 4 clocked at 3.40 GHz, paired with 4 GB of RAM and a 410 GB hard drive split across two separate disks, which holds up reasonably well enough, wouldn't you agree?

And if I recall correctly, there wasn't even a services.EXE; rather, it was services.MSC 🙂

At this point, I am beginning to wonder if the issue isn't simply a matter of running an outdated version of Windows Repair; could it be that the software lacks proper support for Windows 8 or 8.1? Or perhaps such a connection is merely coincidental?

It appears I am left with nothing but a System Restore point dated August 12, 2014, and absolutely nothing else. I cannot begin to fathom how the necessary settings could have been disabled, nor can I find any way to rectify this, as attempting to revert to any prior state simply fails to work. Consequently, it seems my backup options have vanished entirely.

I am well aware that one ought to perform a full backup before attempting anything with Windows repair, yet I have found the entire process to be such an exercise in futility that it frequently fails, throwing up yet another error; as I previously noted, the system had even disabled the ability to create backups altogether. 😢

I find myself facing a rather significant dilemma with one particular laptop. To put it bluntly, the machine is in a state of total disarray—or, as my father would say, "it has been absolutely gutted." The sound driver appears to have vanished entirely; I am left with no audio whatsoever, and the taskbar simply displays a speaker icon marked with a red 'X'. My attempts to reinstall the driver have led me to a secondary complication, as the installation process consistently triggers an error code 0x0000000D. Is it possible there is perhaps an extra zero in that sequence? I truly cannot say,
Windows Defender is currently disabled, and while the notification pane suggests I should reactivate it, clicking through merely opens the System32 folder—which, if you are looking for anything useful, is likely a dead end. I did locate the icon, yet upon clicking it, I am met with a warning stating that the service is deactivated and requires activation. I even downloaded the specific driver from the HP website for this exact model, but there was no mention of this specific error during the installation attempt. Furthermore, when I attempt to enable the firewall for avg 2015, I am met with yet another installation error; it seems this laptop is practically drowning in error messages. Both Windows Defender and the avg firewall are inactive because I ran a Windows repair all-in-one tool, which apparently disables them automatically to facilitate a system cleanup. Since this device is relatively new to me, I must ask for a more detailed explanation, as my technical expertise is largely limited to basic system maintenance, cleaning hardware, and updating drivers. My father attempted to intervene once the issues began by performing what he believed was a factory reset, though it seems to have had no effect whatsoever. To make matters worse, when I searched for a system backup, I found absolutely nothing. I ventured into services.exe and discovered that the relevant service is either disabled or set to manual; I suspect this Windows repair utility has caused considerable damage to the operating system. It is particularly frustrating given that the laptop is only about three months old. Could anyone explain whether this chaos is the fault of the software itself, and might you suggest some reliable programs or solutions to rectify this situation? THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.

PS: The laptop is an HP Pavilion equipped with 4GB of RAM, an Intel Pentium 3556 (1.70GHz), a 1000 GB HDD, and Intel graphics.
