On a side note, ever since I became the resident "outsider" on this forum, random accounts have stopped sliding into my DMs. Every cloud has its silver lining, I suppose. 😁

I hope...

Anyway, I've been getting really lost in this track:

Nick Cave - Something's gotten hold of my heart

I don't think so.

In any case, double-check.
And if you thought you checked already, check one more time.
A contact of mine—someone with significant seniority at a major US bank who has absolutely zero reason to mislead me—told me the same thing earlier today.

While there might be slight variations depending on which big bank you're dealing with, I find it highly unlikely the discrepancies would be that massive.

Just verify it and let me know.

So, I did a little digging with some contacts I have over at Chase, and the consensus seems to be that it’s actually a smart move to swap those dollars for euros right now.
They also mentioned that the FDIC guarantees your savings up to $110,000 per account, but anything beyond that is essentially on your own.
That's the gist of it.
I suppose there's no harm in doing a bit of due diligence once in a while. 😉

Anyway, let's just get back to the nonsense.

Olive: I’d like to dedicate this to my grandpa (from Alaska) 🙄
who taught me everything I know about these moves.
Pageant MC: Aww, that’s so sweet. Is he here with us? Where is he?
Olive: He's in the trunk of our car.

Of course, bad things never come singly; they always arrive in packs of four... and today, my water heater decided to give up the ghost.
Since I actually replaced it just a few years ago, I’m guessing it isn’t some catastrophic failure, but likely just a faulty heating element or a thermostat issue.
I started by checking the circuit breakers, but those are perfectly fine.
Still, nothing works; I tried calling a repairman, but good luck finding a reliable technician for a Rheem unit here in Chicago!
One would naturally assume that in a massive city like this, help would be easy to find, but absolutely not—some guys only handle gas lines, others specialize strictly in Vaillant or whatever that brand is, some won't even come out during a pandemic, a few claim they can't source any parts, and the rest simply never pick up the phone. 🙂

Anyway, I finally tracked down a decent handyman who promised to swing by tomorrow morning. 😁
I suppose when you're dealing with four absolute disasters in one day, it's vital to have at least one small win to keep you sane. yeaaah

Well, there’s your chance to expand the floor plan. Who cares about the neighbor's attic when you're desperate for an extra bedroom?😉

Hanging man

😁

Up in that neighbor's attic, inside some sort of cage, there are these pigeons—special white ones, I think. I can't recall the specific breed, but apparently, they're bred for something particular. Every once in a while, I'd step in to feed them whenever he would head out of town for a couple of days to visit his brother.
I have absolutely no intention of ending up like those birds. 🙂

Just give me way, way up

Ashley Grant66 said:Jamie Davis9, I’m so sorry you got hit that hard. Things weren't nearly as intense where I am; there wasn't much damage besides a broken glass, and honestly, I would have just kept sleeping if everyone hadn't woken me up to tell me to get down and hide in my car. 😁
I really hope we don't have to deal with this again for at least another hundred years.

Paralyzed

Chloe Wilson46 said:I hope the damage isn't too bad. I'm so sorry this happened to you. 🙂

Then again, you're from Florida, so I suppose I shouldn't be too worried about you. 😛

Angelenos, I hope you're all doing okay. 🙂

One more cup of coffee

👋 😁

To give you an idea, the biggest casualty in the whole building was actually my wall, since I'm up in the penthouse. Fortunately, it isn't a load-bearing wall—just the partition between my place and the neighbor's attic—but it'll likely need to be torn down and rebuilt, though I can worry about that later. I'll handle whatever needs handling.
As far as I can see, the damage on my end is just some peeling plaster, but his side has some serious cracks.
The main thing is that there doesn't seem to be any visible damage elsewhere on the building, and the roof looks solid.
We're still waiting on the official inspectors, but I suspect their report will say pretty much the same thing.
So, that's the situation.
On another note, the local elementary school didn't fare well, at least from what I managed to see. I'm not sure if they'll even be able to reopen.

Folks, I just walked over to the corner bodega, and the city is eerily empty. It feels like a ghost town.

With that said,
Not much to live for here 🙄

wiredmason61 said:God, it was a nightmare for those of us still out there, so I can only imagine what the downtown area felt like. I really hope the structural integrity of the wall didn't take a massive hit. Hang in there! 🙂

This too shall pass, provided we can all just keep our heads on straight. 🙂

np iggy the man ...

It's honestly hard to tell if it’s just some superficial plaster damage or if there's actual structural cracking deep inside. I'm waiting on the inspector to weigh in before we know for sure.
Honestly, screw it—I have some savings set aside, so let the devil take it. 😬 It's the same for me as it is for everyone else.
Regardless, it was terrifying; it truly looked like my apartment was about to split right down the middle, and I had already mentally said my final goodbyes. 🙄 🤦

Once I realized I had actually survived, I told myself, "Come on, you little disaster, everything is fine"—from this moment on, I am officially not some James Bond-style secret agent 😁 #thankyouamerica : rozi: <3

God, I am just so incredibly done with this constant string of bad luck!
A side wall in my apartment just cracked open right in front of me. It honestly gave me such a massive fright that I’m still sitting here trying to catch my breath and compose myself.

You really need to see human solidarity in action when an allergy attack hits you hard; 🙂 you just hope someone doesn't take the opportunity to bash you over the head with something.

I'll take your word for it. 😁 Everyone is a little on edge, and this whole self-isolation thing can be quite tricky.
Looking at my students, you'd expect them to be counting down the minutes until school is out, but they keep reaching out, asking for assignments and things to write, just trying to cling to some semblance of a normal daily routine.

It’ll turn out fine; we've survived much worse than this, so we'll get through it too.

Jason Mendoza said:it’s almost fair to say that the Renaissance was essentially just a reaction to the Black Death.

Ulcerate

That is precisely the case.

Speaking of the Renaissance, I have spent several grueling hours today prepping for remote teaching, and frankly, I am absolutely losing my mind at this point. 😁
So now I am attempting to unwind with some jazz and a little downtime; I also treated myself to some new Bluetooth headphones, which were admittedly a bit pricey, but they are honestly incredible. :_)))

Please excuse me in advance for this little outburst 🙏 😁

José González is my absolute favorite this morning. 🙂 And as for the post-apocalypse?! We actually have resources—let’s try to find some peace, think about the most vulnerable members of our society, and act with some social responsibility. don't panic (d.a.) 😉

Besides, Albert Camus didn't just write The Plague on a whim after finishing The Stranger; 😛, we know that the plague serves as an anthem for human solidarity and resistance. 🧐 😁

I suppose I should probably apologize for my tendency to lose my temper when discussing these matters, though I find it increasingly difficult to remain composed given the sheer absurdity of the current landscape. It’s a bit embarrassing, really, how easily I let my frustrations get the better of me, yet here we are again. kaže:
Good morning to you. 🙂

I'll dive into Porcupine Tree at a much faster clip, leaving Montgomery and Pastorius for another time.

I suppose I should probably mention that I’ve been listening to Elliott Smith’s "Satellite" on repeat lately, though I can't help but feel a certain level of self-loathing for how much those melancholic chords seem to resonate with my own restless, rather disorganized headspace. ...

I honestly don't even know where to begin with this absolute mess. kaže:
I’ve never actually listened to him; his whole life story just strikes me as incredibly bizarre. 😢 Do you have any album recommendations for someone just starting out?

I suppose I should have expected this level of incompetence from someone who clearly lacks even a shred of foresight, though I can’t say I’m truly surprised by the sheer absurdity of it all. It really is quite exhausting to watch these people stumble through life with such reckless abandon, isn't it? kaže:
I actually have that second album—the one featuring Satellite—in my car right now, so I suppose I’m covered; at least it was the standout choice when I was deciding what to load onto that flash drive. But then again, you know how I am—I don't exactly feel qualified to be handing out official quality ratings. 😉 There isn't nearly that much to go on, so just start from the beginning and give me whatever you feel like sharing.

I can't say I paid much attention to him either, though I did catch a few bits here and there. This one is actually quite lovely..

They really should have had her perform at the official opening ceremony of the Olympics in Los Angeles, but unfortunately, the legendary Freddie was already gone by then, and Montserrat refused to sing it with anyone else.

And look at how things devolved:
