Is the "podium or bust" mentality actually ruining sports? in Hobbies & Leisure ·
I’ve been sitting here thinking about the psychological toll of elite competition, and I can't shake the feeling that our modern obsession with the top spot is becoming increasingly toxic. We live in this culture of extreme optimization where anything less than gold—or, if you're being generous, silver—is treated as a fundamental failure. I was watching some highlights from recent international competitions, and it really struck me how much mental devastation happens when an athlete performs at a world-class level, hits every physical marker they aimed for, but still ends up standing on that third-step spot on the podium.

From the outside, we see a bronze medalist and think, "Hey, they're one of the best in the world!" But if you look at the faces of the athletes, there is often this profound sense of disorientation. It’s like they’ve followed the blueprint to the letter, they’ve sacrificed their entire personal lives, endured the grueling training cycles, and executed the movement perfectly, yet the outcome still feels like a glitch in the system. It creates this weird, existential crisis where the logic of "effort equals reward" just completely breaks down. When the math doesn't add up, how do you even begin to process that?

I remember back in my college days, I was part of a competitive rowing crew. We spent months perfecting our synchronization, obsessing over every millisecond of our stroke. We had one race where we were technically perfect—we didn't make a single mistake. We beat our personal best by a significant margin, but we still came in third. I remember sitting on the dock afterward, feeling completely hollow. It wasn't even sadness; it was more of a confusing, quiet anger. It felt like the universe had lied to us. We did everything "right," so why didn't the result reflect that?

I think this is something that translates to more than just sports, too. We see it in academia, in the corporate climb, and even in personal milestones. We are taught that life is a linear progression: if you work hard, you move up. If you follow the rules, you win. But the reality of high-level competition is that there is a massive amount of chaos and randomness involved. A slight gust of wind, a fraction of a second's delay in a reaction, a microscopic slip in grip—these things can render years of discipline irrelevant.

When that happens, and the athlete is left standing there looking like they've just been hit by a truck, it’s because their internal logic has been shattered. The "why" has vanished. It’s hard to find meaning in a pursuit when the outcome feels arbitrary, even when you know, intellectually, that the margins are just that thin. We need to start talking more about the mental resilience required to handle the "nothing makes sense" moments, because right now, it feels like we only celebrate the winners and ignore the psychological wreckage left behind by the people who did everything right and still lost.

Are we placing too much emphasis on the color of the medal rather than the quality of the performance? How do you personally deal with the feeling that you did everything perfectly but still didn't get the result you were promised?
New headphones? in Computer Peripherals ·
James Fisher11 said:If you need them for CoD so you can actually tell where the shots are coming from, maybe try finding some headphones with a 7.1 sound system.

Man, don't talk nonsense. CoD doesn't even support Dolby Atmos, so all that is pretty much useless. Just grab a Medusa and call it a day.

So, I finally pulled the trigger on a Donic Waldner 700 for $76. Man, let me tell you, the difference between this and that old Expert Pro I had for $18 is just... massive. Like, night and day. Especially when it comes to the spin. With my old setup, I could barely pull off a decent ghost serve, but with this thing? It’s effortless. Speed is killer, too. Honestly, I feel like I’ve made a huge leap forward compared to using my last racket.

Just dropping another one in right after the last one.

So, I used to play table tennis all the time back in the day, like two years ago. Well, I finally got back into it recently, and my buddy and I ended up getting into this huge, stupid argument over whether hitting the number three gives your opponent a point or what. He was dead set on saying it’s just a three and you get the point, while I was sitting there insisting it's basically unlimited.

I already went ahead and dug through the ITTF rulebook to prove him wrong, so I definitely won that round, but hey, thanks for the input anyway.

Just ignore my previous question, I'll figure that part out myself. I'm actually stuck on a specific rule regarding net serves (LET). Like, how many times can you touch the net during a serve? And does it count how many times the net gets hit during the entire set while serving? Thanks.

Hey, this thread’s been totally dead so I figured I'd kick things up a bit with a question. I play table tennis recreationally, but honestly, I'm pretty decent and I can pull some solid spin. Right now, I'm rocking an Expert Pro racket that set me back $23. It's okay, I guess, but I just can't seem to get enough "spin-at" out of it during serves. I'm looking for a pre-assembled setup in the $100 range. I use a penhold grip and I only really use one side for both my forehand and backhand.

I was leaning towards the $83 Butterfly Timo Boll 700 F. What do you guys think? Or maybe I should just grab a Donic instead.

It was at ST over at Filip informatika. Look, I know I'm right about this. Here it is (click), just listed under a different name now. You can also find it at Protis, but they don't have any in stock right now.

So, here's the deal... I'm trying to figure out if this cx400 can actually handle running a 4850CF or maybe even a 5770CF alongside an x4 630

I mean, I’m probably just gonna grab the VX550 since you never really know if you're gonna end up overclocking everything or maybe even throwing another GPU into the mix for a CF setup later on... the difference is $40 not that massive anyway

So, I'm kind of wondering... should I grab the Corsair VX450W or just go with the VX550W for this specific setup?
