In my opinion, there’s no real need to stress about it since you can't actually overclock this processor... so a specialized cooler probably isn't necessary either.
The only thing you could really tinker with regarding an overclock is pushing the TurboBoost multiplier to its limit, which would get you to 4GHz. You might also be able to bump the BCLK from 100 to 102MHz without everything crashing, which would land you at roughly 4080MHz. I guess some motherboards don't even support a 40 multiplier—they cap out at 38—so you might not even hit that 4GHz mark.
Man, the absolute worst thing you can do is walk into a store and ask them what you need 🤣 ...though I guess there are exceptions (like Hexa, for example).
The HD 7850 is going for about $400$150, and honestly, they perform a bit better than the GTX 750 Ti. But since it's Nvidia and half the people out there won't even know AMD exists, you could probably flip it for $167 maybe 😬 .
Sometimes patience actually pays off. I ordered a Z370 Extreme4 from HGSpot yesterday, $35 and honestly, the price was lower than anywhere else I looked. 😛
It's pretty rare to find power supplies rated at exactly 230W. Anyway, I'd probably go with that RX 560 for $275; it seems like a solid deal, and the CPU and GPU should be well-balanced.
It doesn't really make sense to me that the i9 7900X works for you, but a 6-core Ryzen Threadripper doesn't. I guess I wonder how many cores that poker software actually uses most of the time?
Motherboards with the H110 chipset don't support Kaby Lake Pentiums, and since he isn't buying a pre-built, I doubt they'd flash the BIOS/UEFI without charging extra.
The board is $207 and already comes with 2x4GB of RAM, by the way. Would I really just hand him an Amazon.com link to go use Downtown? 😬
Actually, good catch. He can probably pick parts from different stores since he's in a major US city and isn't building a full setup.
