No offense intended, but if she is working in a lab handling nothing other than blood samples, she really ought to be aware that the probability of such an infection occurring through skin contact is virtually non-existent.
If HCV, HBV, or HIV were transmitted through mere surface splashes, we would certainly have a much larger crisis on our hands; however, since thank God they aren't spread that way, there is absolutely no reason for concern...👍
It is a brutal disease. For seven years, I watched my mother and the rest of our family grapple with its consequences. It is believed she contracted it via a blood transfusion sometime before 1990. While she had wonderful doctors, the illness progressed so aggressively that she fell into that unfortunate statistical minority—those few where complications escalate so rapidly that standard therapy becomes impossible. In January 2007, she was finally placed on the transplant waiting list. We actually missed out on the first available liver because there was a higher-priority patient in Chicago at that exact moment. I truly hope that individual is doing well and has recovered. My mother, unfortunately, never made it to a second opportunity; she passed away last October due to a cascade of complications stemming from cirrhosis. For the better part of this past year, she spent 80% of her time in the hospital, during which time I essentially earned a self-taught degree by studying alongside the specialist treating her, who was practically an expert on hepatitis C and its systemic effects. People are profoundly misinformed about hepatitis, and it falls upon all of us to strip away this wretched stigma once and for all.
To everyone currently fighting hepatitis C: stay strong. If you follow your doctors' instructions to the letter, embrace modern therapies, and maintain a disciplined lifestyle, there is a very high probability of recovery.
