I honestly don't think Scorsese and De Niro would ever even consider a sequel. There’s zero upside for them—it’d just be a massive loss. The movie is an absolute masterpiece, and I can't picture a follow-up that doesn't totally suck. Most sequels these days are just disappointing cash grabs.

A sequel is completely unnecessary.

Look, Travis Bickle didn't exactly scrub all the scum off the streets of New York City, but he did save one girl. By the end of the film, he finally looks like a man at peace. He drops Betsy off at her place, and even though she tries to reach out to him, he just leaves her on the sidewalk and quietly cruises away in his Uber into the New York City night. He becomes a cinematic icon. Just God's lonely man.

So why go back and mess with perfection now?

If I tell you that instead of watching the conflict between Americans and the Japanese, I was glued to the TV watching the political power struggle between Clinton and Gingrich on NBC, then you already know exactly what kind of night I'm having.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the movie ended with the entire Japanese fleet being wiped out and Affleck personally stepping in to give Admiral Yamamoto a knuckle sandwich.

They aren't twins. Vladimir is five years younger.

The doctorates are legit, though. They both graduated in pedagogy and then went on to get PhDs in sports science.

If you were out there bragging about being a world-class physicist based on stuff from Rudjer, that’s on you. If anyone ever actually fact-checks that, they’re going to conclude you guys aren't just physics geeks, but total fantasists who can't be trusted. Sorry, man. The search for a physicist who actually knows how to throw a punch continues. But hey, don't lose heart. Even if you can't knock anyone out, at least you're smart.

Back in the day, there was basically one boxing organization and one champion in every weight class. But once huge money started flowing through the sport, people started spinning up their own organizations just to grab a slice of the pie. Then you had disputes over rankings, corruption, fixed fights—all that stuff. So, they kept churning out new bodies, supposedly to escape the mess. Of course, all that just made the whole thing even more chaotic. Honestly, anyone can register their own boxing sanctioning body and put on matches for a "world," "continental," or even "galactic" title. How much those titles actually mean is a different story. You see it in the US papers sometimes—some local fighter wins a European title from some obscure organization nobody’s ever heard of. Nobody knows who ran the fight, and nobody cares about the "champion." He probably fought three matches in his entire life. It’s all just a setup for promoters to squeeze a little cash out of suckers in some tiny town. The "champion" gets paid just enough to buy a sandwich and a beer after the fight, and he gets a blurb in the news written by some reporter who got a kickback from the promoter.

Could be. But I wouldn't trust Drviš for anything. The guy is living proof of how far boxing has fallen. If an absolute non-entity like him could be a European champion, then anyone can do it. Once you see one of his fights, you lose all respect for the sport. No skill, no power. Just a joke. I watched his fight before last, where some average Australian absolutely dismantled him. Drviš couldn't land a thing, so he tried kicking him in the groin a few times. Pathetic. They should have banned him from the ring years ago.

It’s the same mess in almost every combat sport. There are "champions" everywhere.

Thanks for the correction. I added a belt to the Doctor's tally. I’m just hoping the managers can actually get all three of them lined up for some unification bouts. Honestly, I think Klitschko is the best of the bunch—he's got the best shot at it.

It's true, he's more of a spectacle now than a fighter, but before he went to prison for those assault charges, he was the last heavyweight whose fights were worth the ticket price. You don't see power like that in the heavyweight division since George Foreman. His technique was shaky, sure, but with hands like his, who cares? Very few guys lasted more than three or four rounds with him; most people were either too terrified or too concussed to stay standing past the first or second round. People paid a premium to watch a beast in action. Then that fluke loss to James "Buster" Douglas happened, followed by the legal troubles, and it was game over for Mike Tyson. He managed to win the title back twice, but the magic was gone. The guy just lost it. And he aged a decade overnight. In boxing, those heavy hands only work while you're young. Once the strength starts fading, it's basically over.

You might find it interesting that he has a twin brother, Vladimir, who was nearly as talented a heavyweight as Vitali Klitschko. He walked away from the sport because they couldn't both be champions, and neither of them wanted to fight the other. So now Vladimir just stays on Vitali's team. He's always in his brother's corner during fights. And the guy actually has a PhD.

So, you physicists can brag about having a heavyweight champion who can knock a man out and then explain the theory of relativity to him right after.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the three versions that actually matter in boxing:

WBA - Chrys Byrd (USA)

WBA and WBC - Vitali Kličko (Ukraine). He picked up the WBA title just two days ago. Honestly, he’ll probably become the undisputed champ if his managers can pull off a fight against Byrd.

The heavyweight division is a total joke right now. It's never been this bad. I feel like even some guy like Mavrović—and I’m talking about the one who eats clean and stays at a solid 175 pounds—could hold his own today.

The guys actually worth watching are all in the middleweight and welterweight classes... Trinidad, de la Hoya, Mosley...

If you're into boxing, do yourself a favor and head down to the video store. Grab "When We Were Kings." It's that documentary about the legendary Ali vs. Foreman fight back in '74 over in the Congo. Really great flick.

Most of these heavyweights fighting today? Total nobodies. Once you realize Kličko literally has a PhD in physics, you get the vibe. Ever since Tyson bit Holyfield's ear, the sport has just gone downhill. It's a snooze fest.
