Hang in there, old friend. Thinking of you.
Let me know if there's anything I can do to help. I'm not sure what they call it at the philosophy department, but getting an appointment there isn't exactly rocket science. Besides, they’ll point you in the right direction and figure out a plan for you. Based on everything I've been reading from you... you aren't crazy. You don't need a psychiatrist. You just have some very solvable issues. You just need someone you can trust, a little self-belief, and some patience. That's really it. Everything is fixable. Plus, as far as I know, our mental health system here in the States is a total joke. They just bleed you dry, and the people working the insurance claims basically sleep through their shifts while screwing over patients. It's ridiculous. Honestly, I trust psychologists a lot more. I know a few through my girlfriend and could ask around for you if you want. No big deal.
By the way... about the music. If I'm being honest, I think you might be associating certain songs with bad memories. What kind of jerk is that professor anyway? You didn't mention if he was one of those guys from the Berklee College of Music crowd, but it doesn't matter.
Please, just try to enjoy the music. Not every musician is a predator.
Keep me posted on how you're doing and how life is going. You seem like a good person, you know?
That's all for now.
Hey Bob Roman,
here's just another guy in this crowd of women offering a perspective on what you're going through. Even if we don't see eye to eye, I figure a few different viewpoints can't hurt.
I'm not sure if you're still keeping up with the replies here, but regardless...
Maybe you're already seeing someone? If not, I just wanted to offer some advice regarding therapy. I know how pricey private practice can get, but at a place like NYU, there are psychologists who work with people for free and get incredible results. They aren't "social psychologists" like you mentioned—I know that for two reasons. First, my girlfriend is a psychologist, and second, I was a skeptic myself until I listened to her and finally sorted out my own issues.
My situation was nowhere near as heavy as yours, but it felt significant enough at the time. I'm a musician (sorry if music brings back bad memories) and I teach pedagogy while performing classical music. Truly sorry for what you went through... if you don't mind me asking, did you attend that school downtown with the professor in glasses?
I really do hope you find some peace. It would be nice to hear how you're doing later on... and if there's any way I can help by connecting you with some professionals, just say the word.
