Psoriasis [PLEASE READ FIRST POST!] in Health ·
Hello, everyone. Just another psoriasis sufferer checking in to this corner for those of us struggling. I’ve been dealing with my faithful companion for eight years now—it all started after a series of unfortunate events that I clearly didn't handle well, which triggered my flare-ups. First, I broke out in chickenpox, and those just wouldn't clear up. Eventually, they sent me to a Salisbury clinic for a 21-day treatment; they did some minor scraping and spent the rest of the time applying ointments. They actually wanted to try quartz therapy on me, but I refused—I heard about some girl who had a terrible experience, and honestly, it spooked me. So, that was that.
For a few years, back when the system still allowed it, I used to get sent to those seaside medical resorts for 21-day stays through my insurance.
Fortunately, my case is relatively mild. I’ve never even had it on my elbows or knees; instead, it shows up on my scalp, patches on my neck, my chest area, under my arms, the inner part of my upper arms, and around my navel. I’ve only dealt with actual scabs a few times, and even then, they were small and cleared quickly. After reading some of your posts here, I realize I’ve actually been quite lucky.
I’ll admit, I panicked for a while. I was terrified that as I aged, things would spiral out of control like they have for many of you, and I started thinking much more intensely about how to fight this. Right now, I rely solely on Salic ointment, and I hate it from the bottom of my heart. It works, sure, but it is incredibly greasy, and because of that, my clothes, hair, and bedding all end up ruined. I don't use it constantly; I only reach for it when the patches flare up and turn red, which usually happens whenever I get really stressed out.
The one thing that truly helped was the ocean. For years, I’d spend the entire summer staying with my aunt at the coast, and during those times, my psoriasis stayed quiet; it would typically only show up in the spring. Nowadays, I can't stay by the ocean for long periods anymore—I just don't have the cash to afford it, and there were even years where I couldn't go at all. Ever since I stopped going to the coast every summer, the psoriasis has been getting progressively worse—slowly but surely spreading, and becoming harder to manage.
I am 27 years old now, and while I accepted a long time ago that I have an incurable skin condition, I will never feel comfortable wearing a tank top in the summer knowing people are staring at my patches as if I have something contagious! It’s a horrible feeling.
Even when it recedes, once I get a bit of a tan, the spots remain visible—the skin stays lighter, making me look "off" again.
I’ve been reading about that Noni Tahitian juice, and since it seems to have helped so many people, I’ve decided I’m going to give it a shot, regardless of the cost. I just need to save up enough money first.
I feel a little better now that I've let it all out. It's a bit lonely, too; I don't know anyone else facing this same struggle that I can actually talk to about it.
