Just to follow up on that question about the Intel Core i3-6100.

A friend of mine picked up a Z170 motherboard to pair with an Intel Core i3-6100. He grabbed some DDR4 running at either 2800 or 3000 MHz and tried to overclock the BCLK after installing the latest BIOS update.

What was that build actually for? $33 Cheaper than an i5-6500. Pairing an ASRock H110M with DDR4 2133.

Opinions on YouTube and all over the internet are totally split on this because the performance is basically identical in newer games. So, I have to ask: how much does it actually make sense to grab an Intel Core i3-6100 with this specific setup? Since constant overclocking leads to faster wear and tear, there's always the risk of it dying. But then again, it’s half the price of an i5-6500. If it does kick the bucket, it’s easy to swap out later for a better CPU on the LGA 1151 socket. That way, I’d still be sitting on fast DDR4 and a Z170 board that’s pretty much future-proof regarding the socket.

If you went with that specific i5 build for the same price, you'd be stuck. You wouldn't have any real upgrade path because the motherboard is bottom-tier.

This is purely theorycrafting, and I’m looking for some expert opinions. 😁
