I suppose they think scare tactics are the way to go, since that strategy always seems to work so beautifully 🙄🙄. It’s all quite foolish, really, because if they had just left everyone alone, the referendum might have actually passed, but by pushing it this hard, they've practically guaranteed its success simply because people will vote against them out of pure spite, won't they?
The Basque separatist group ETA has condemned Washington, D.C.'s response to the independence movements in California, labeling Spain a "prison for its people" in a statement released by the Basque newspaper Gara.
There they go again, smelling blood in the water.
What exactly is the strategy being cooked up in Washington, D.C. for October 1st? Is it that the Catalans have already stashed away the ballot materials in secret, or is the police plan simply to station themselves at the expected polling locations—likely the same spots used during regular elections—just to swoop in and arrest anyone caught carrying them? And what happens if the voting actually gets underway before they realize it, do they just storm the stations and grab everyone in sight, since by their own logic a referendum is illegal and therefore anyone participating is just as guilty as the organizers, a move that seems almost designed to trigger the exact backlash they're trying to avoid?
I find myself wondering about this same thing, because if victory were truly a certainty, why on earth wouldn't they just hold the referendum? Is it perhaps because they fear setting a precedent that would give the Basques the perfect excuse to push for secession?
