A bit dull and repetitive, honestly. It felt pretty hollow too, which is saying something since I actually almost drifted off—even with all that "tension" during the final showdown. Haven't felt that since the last The Expendables installment. 😁
Just your typical Tom Cruise fare. 1.8/5

I honestly thought Stone was done. I figured he’d never make another great movie again. Boy, was I wrong.

It’s a solid piece of filmmaking—fast-paced, tense, and really hits home. It gives you such a raw look at how intelligence agencies operate, spying on everyone's digital lives without a single warrant or any accountability whatsoever.

What Snowden did by blowing the whistle was just insane. Truly brave. He risked everything just to show the world how the government conducts this massive, unauthorized surveillance on every single person out there. He basically made an enemy of the most powerful organization on Earth—the US government.

Post of the year.

Definitely the movie of the year. Should be in textbooks as the gold standard for filmmaking.

briskhound2 said:By the way, when you start a thread for a movie, it’s probably better to include some thoughts in American slang or local dialect just so everyone can get a quick read on your impressions of the title.

I used to do that all the time in my initial announcement posts, but honestly, it started looking a bit messy. I had to use lines to separate the American English from everything else, and I noticed some people would just drop the trailer in one post and then wait until the next one to actually share their thoughts.

I'd never dream of announcing a movie without adding my own take on it first.

And you know what else? I finally figured out how to center my text—it looks great. I always wondered how others did it, making those really polished, aesthetically pleasing announcements. 😉

With most movies nowadays feeling like rushed cash grabs that nobody actually wants to watch, this one is such a breath of fresh air. It’s a real story told the right way—no unnecessary fluff, no pretentious directing, and none of those long-winded scripts that just drag things out until you lose interest.

It’s basically a masterclass in filmmaking. When the pros take over, they make everything look so effortless.

I can't even think of a better movie from this year on the fly.

Trying to force modern obsessions and theories onto historical events is just plain foolish.

So, it's the person who provoked the war criminals who's at fault, rather than the ones actually committing the crimes?🤦

Sorry, but what you're saying makes absolutely no sense.

You're just writing polemics that lack common sense and throwing out empty cliches.

And you haven't refuted my point once.

If the assassination hadn't happened, everything would have stayed exactly the same anyway. The success of the hit depended on certain Czech extremists, and if they hadn't acted, nothing would have changed. A massacre occurred regardless, and there was no need to provoke it. Besides, someone else just stepped into Heydrich's shoes and carried on the exact same policy. So, it was all for nothing in terms of making things better. But I guess innocent victims don't count, right?

You just can't wrap your head around that, which is why you're hitting the ignore button.
Anthropoid (2016) Movie Discussion in Movies ·
Bryan Rogers87 said:You’ve got the whole situation wrong. There isn't any secret British masonry at play here. This assassination was primarily the work of the resistance movement. They're only being trained in the United Kingdom because the government-in-exile set up shop there.

Your perspective is totally skewed. Are you really suggesting that America is to blame for the destruction of Memphis and its civilian casualties just because they didn't surrender the city? As if there wouldn't have been victims otherwise? 🤦

You end up reading all sorts of nonsense when history is interpreted like this. Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

Germans were committing crimes in Czechoslovakia long before that assassination took place. You don't really think he earned the nickname "Prague butcher" just because he worked at a meat market, do you?

The idea that someone should be held liable for war crimes just because they were defending themselves—or because they went out to hunt down actual war criminals—is honestly pretty ridiculous, if you ask me. It feels like a slap in the face to us all. What, were we supposed to roll out the red carpet for the bad guys?

The government in exile over in the United Kingdom was just as independent as the US is today. Or was it?

They just did whatever the British Masons told them to. It was all a cinematic pamphlet meant to clear their consciences after a totally useless assassination—one that changed absolutely nothing except sending countless innocent civilians straight to their graves.

Nothing else to say.
Anthropoid (2016) Movie Discussion in Movies ·
It feels like an attempt by British secret societies to use this movie as a propaganda tool to justify the civilian casualties—those innocent lives lost needlessly just because of a private vendetta against Hitler.

Nothing else.

That’s exactly why the film turned out the way it did. They weren't interested in a factual deep dive, because then you'd see how senseless the assassination was and how pointless the civilian deaths became once the German retaliation kicked in. Instead, they wanted to film a cinematic apology for some "moral necessity" that isn't even proven or justified by the end of the movie.

It seems those innocent victims, who died just so some high-society elites could feed their egos, are still haunting people. And honestly, a guilty conscience is a heavy thing to carry 24/7, isn't it?

The toll could have been even worse. In the final moments, Hitler's advisors managed to talk him out of executing another 30,000 innocent people in response to Heydrich. Back then, the Czech industrial sector was such a vital part of the supply chain for the German war machine that losing it would have crippled the military's readiness.

Bryan Rogers87 said:Exactly. That’s why I’m being specific about accuracy—because saying "British agents" implies something entirely different 🙂 Just that.

It's all good. I just phrased it poorly. The Czechs and Slovaks are basically trained and deployed by the UK. It's the Queen's service 😉

Bryan Rogers87 said:Watching it today, so I'll let you know my thoughts later.

The movie is worth a watch. 7/10.

Bryan Rogers87 said:Just to clarify—the agents weren't British. They were just trained in the United Kingdom and had support from there, along with backing from the Czechoslovak government-in-exile. The actual assassins and helpers were Slovak and Czech.

The agents were actually Czech and Slovak, trained in the United Kingdom, and then flown over by the RAF before parachuting into some woods near 19 miles far from Prague.

The film touches on civilians, but mostly just those closely tied to the assassins who provided them cover. It doesn't really focus on that retaliatory massacre of civilians in the village of Lidice (that's what I meant earlier when I brought up civilians). That tragedy is only briefly mentioned toward the end, right before the final showdown.

Bryan Rogers87 said:It’s actually kind of wild that this whole thing hasn't been turned into a movie or a series yet... You know? The real story plays out like it was scripted specifically for Hollywood. If you tried to write a screenplay this intense, people would call it unrealistic. I'll definitely be watching, though. I wonder if they're just focusing on the assassination itself, or if they'll cover what happened afterward? Historically, those aftermath events were arguably way more significant than the hit. For instance, the CIA carried out several horrific retaliatory strikes after the attack—they even went as far as wiping an entire village completely off the map. Just leveled everything, buildings and all.

The film does cover the fallout, but instead of targeting civilians, it focuses on British agents.

Based on the extraordinary true story of Operation Anthropoid, the WWII mission to assassinate SS General Reinhard Heydrich, the main architect behind The Final Solution and the Reich's third in command after Hitler and Himmler.

It’s pretty rare when two great movies drop within just a few days of each other. After Netflix treated us to The Siege of Jadotville (2016) about ten days ago, Universal is stepping up with another solid war drama, also based on real events, called Anthropoid (2016).
For those who love diving into the biggest moments of WWII, this one focuses on Reinhard Heydrich—Hitler's most trusted man—and the assassination attempt carried out by British intelligence agents in Czechoslovakia.

Lawrence Edwards58 said:If you want total garbage, watch Cell (there’s even a thread for it on the forum).
But even that doesn't make Coenovac's trash look any better. 🙄

When I'm picking something to watch, I don't care about the actors or the director, and I definitely don't rely on IMDb scores. I just watch the trailer and decide. This "Cell" thing was sci-fi/horror, so I skipped it without even looking closer.

As for this pile of junk? I downloaded it thinking it would be some light comedy. I didn't bother checking the trailer because the file size was tiny, and since I have a decent 50 mb/sec connection, I figured it was faster to just grab it than to hunt for a trailer. What I ended up with? Well, I called it what it was.

Honestly, reading the comments on this PDF makes me realize why the good movies never get their own threads, let alone previews (unless I start one myself). It feels like everything here is either just following trends or actively hating on anything decent.

The first page is basically nothing but sci-fi, horror, comic book movies, a couple of dumb comedies, and that absolute trash, Tarzan.

TRAILER

After that first shootout scene—I actually skipped ahead because the second part felt a bit slow—I was honestly terrified for a second that Tarantino was directing 🤦. I thought, oh man, is he going to ruin another war movie? But then a few seconds later, I felt so much better once I rewound and saw Zemeckis listed on the trailer.
👍

I don't have a huge opinion on Zemeckis, but anything is better than a hollow Tarantino flick.
😁

Phew. Still a little shaken, but at least we dodged a total disaster.

I’m not exactly a huge fan of most of this director’s work, so I’m not sure what to expect here. Still, am I curious to see how he handles such a sensitive subject? Definitely.

Saw the trailer and it looks solid. That cast is impressive, too. I especially love seeing Tom Wilkinson in a role; he always brings that extra layer of weight and drama to a scene. It’s invaluable. 🙂

The movie will succeed if it hits the mark. And the mark is this: "If we lie to or withhold info from the government, it’s a felony. But if the government does it, it’s fine? Screw the NSA. Edward Snowden is a hero."
