The weather really played a part today; the wind was nasty enough that you barely saw ten guys break par. Looking at Saturday, the forecast says sunny but windy—pretty much more of the same. Brooks Koepka is looking solid.
It’s a bummer seeing how Day completely fell apart on Day one, and from what I can see, Day is still struggling through the second. I guess Spieth might deal with a bit of wind on Friday, but honestly, he’s playing pretty damn well right now.
Looks like we're in for a bit of a heatwave for the final round—probably hitting somewhere in the 85 to 90 range. I guess the wind might pick up a little more than it did on Saturday, too.
I guess the greens might be playing a little faster than they were during the third round.
Martin Kaymer Martin Kaymer He was actually playing pretty solid during the third round, so I guess it would be nice to see him carry that momentum through the final day—especially since he seems to absolutely love this course. It’s where he clinched his first Major, the PGA Championship 2010.
Nah, I don't know. I honestly think they've got the lowest shot out of the top five at actually taking home the title. Jordan Spieth I guess I'm just here. Grace They played their third round without any major ups and downs, which was a pretty big contrast to how Day and Rose were playing.
Day I guess I'm just here. Jordan Spieth They were actually paired up in the same group during the final round of The Open. I guess the American ended up playing the round better than him, though.
Maybe it’s finally time for this Australian to actually pull off a flawless fourth round in a Major.
Jose Newman32 said:Pepperell is absolutely tearing it up—been killer through 15 holes so far. Spieth grabbed a birdie on the first, so things are looking decent there...
Honestly, thank God Pepperell hasn't accidentally taken someone out at the hotel by the 17th hole yet.
Jose Newman32 said:After 27 years, the Open is finally back this Monday. DJ is kicking things off, and honestly, the kid probably deserves a Major at this point. Still, I guess we can hope that Scott—who’s always been a favorite—or maybe even Spieth might pull a fast one and mess up his plans.
The weather forecast for Sunday looks like it might actually favor the long hitters. Conditions should be pretty much perfect right when the heavy hitters start their rounds. DJ might even end the day sitting at the top of the leaderboard.
The Open is finally underway, and Dustin Johnson is already tearing it up with a -7 start. It looks like things might get a little messy tomorrow, though, with some rain and heavier winds moving in.
Jose Newman32 said:Is anyone actually watching the US Open? I’m stuck in some digital wasteland until Sunday, so I’m basically just checking livescores. I'll probably catch the final round properly. I see Tiger is sitting ten over par after the first round... has he ever actually posted a worse score at a major?
He did the same thing at The Open Championship back in 2002—ten over par then too (par was 70). And this year has already seen two other weird ones: he shot +11 (82) at the Phoenix Open and +13 (85) at the Memorial Tournament. In his whole career, he’s only shot a 77 or higher once 17 times, and six of those ten worst rounds have happened just in the last three years.
Jose Newman32 said:I've been debating this with myself, but whatever, let's wrap it up. Jordan Spieth pulled it off in the end. Good on him, really. He was absolutely killing it on the greens all tournament long. Maybe he missed one absolute must-make putt in the final round, but his game was just solid. Honestly, he played so well he kind of sucked the drama out of it—he held a five or six stroke lead over Rose McGowan for most of that last round.
If you ask me, the real turning point was hole 13 during the first round (yeah, I know, that was Day 1, but still...). Spieth was already struggling a bit with those left-to-right shots, and then his drive ended up straight in the woods. While everyone else was probably thinking he was in deep trouble—since people usually struggle to recover from that even if they're only two strokes down—his ball hit a tree and bounced right back onto the fairway. And then he capped it off with a birdie. Sometimes you just need a little luck on your side, I guess. But honestly, he earned it. He came into the tournament in great shape and stayed mentally tough. Plus, he kept things grounded by hanging out with his family and friends; after his rounds, they wouldn't even talk about golf at the house. They just played ping pong, hung out by the pool, and talked about anything else under the sun.
The Ryder Cup 2014 is going down at Gleneagles in Scotland from September 26th through the 28th. Europe is actually the defending champ here, since they managed to edge out the USA with a tight 14.5 - 13.5 win two years back. Looking back at the history since they first started playing this format in 1979—though it used to be UK & Ireland before that—Europe has taken the trophy 10 times, while the USA has grabbed it 7. The Europeans have actually won the last two, I think.
