Best external hard drives to buy right now? in Computer Peripherals ·
Okay, this is totally off-topic and probably belongs over in the pet threads... but, listen, if you want to stop the chaos, just lay down some wide double-sided tape around the edge of your desk. It’s like a little invisible barrier—once the cat realizes that surface is "off-limits," they'll learn their lesson pretty quick.

And honestly, if you're really that worried about losing your files, just toss everything important up into the cloud using one of those services like Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox, or Google Docs.

It was kind of an involuntary thing, really—the admin team had to swap it out because apparently, being a moderator means you have to use capital letters...

(I mean, I'm not saying it absolutely needs to be changed, but honestly, I just prefer the lowercase look.)

Hey, if it’s possible, could I please get my initial P status switched back? Like, from Jason Harris5 to just plain old average.

Thanks a million!

Benjamin King2 said:I wouldn't bother. Intel graphics aren't supported on any version of OS X. Plus, most wireless adapters just won't work. And honestly? You'll probably trip over the touchpad issue too. It's just one more headache waiting to happen.

hmm, wait... doesn't the Intel graphics work fine in a MacBook Air?

A Hackintosh is basically just a giant puzzle of hunting down kexts and endless tweaking. At the end of the day, you're usually just looking at something that runs barely better than a Mint based machine.

Best speakers under $75? in Computer Peripherals ·
Actually... NOPE.

This specific Logitech model just sounds super thin... (I was actually at their speaker presentation over at the headquarters recently).

If you’re dead set on going with a 2.1 setup, you really ought to bump up the budget for $67 and grab one of those models starting with a five, like the Z323 2.1... though, honestly, even then? I’d still rather go with a 2.0 system like the Z-520.

So, here’s the deal with how things load up: Windows 7 and Windows XP actually handle their startup processes pretty differently. It’s kind of like how a modern smartphone can easily run an old app, but that old phone isn't going to know what to do with a brand-new app. In this case, Windows 7 is smart enough to recognize and let you boot into those older versions of Microsoft operating systems, but Windows XP? It just doesn't see Windows 7 as an option, so it won't let you boot into it at all. If you're stuck in that loop, the fix usually comes down to repairing the master boot record. Honestly, the easiest way to tackle it is just to grab a handy little tool like EasyBCD. It makes the whole thing much smoother.
Nope.
What’s the big deal if the title spans two lines? I mean, unless you actually used ENTER-om to break them up—you know, like starting a whole new paragraph?
You can actually play around with your text formatting—and yeah, I’m talking about styles too!—whenever you feel like it. Once you've got that formatted just right, you can basically tell Word to go ahead and whip up a Table of Contents for you. Just one little tip, though: don't go deleting those numbers. You know, the ones you're using to label your chapters and sections? Keep those in there.

I mean, why would you even bother with XMPP?

Look, using hMailServer means you've got your whole SMTP, POP3, and IMAP setup covered... you can send and receive emails from basically any mail client you want, not just through a web browser. It's like having your own little private post office right on your desk.

And if you're asking whether you can link things up... sure, you totally can. All you really need is Gmail.

Has someone maybe messed with the monitor resolution settings?

When you're booting up, try hitting F8 to pull up the menu where you can select Enable VGA mode.

If that doesn't do the trick, you could try enabling boot logging. That’ll generate a little bootlog.txt file on your hard drive filled with all the messages from the startup process, which should make it a whole lot easier for us to track down what's actually going wrong.

That’s just not fair... you got yours right through the company store... I actually had to hunt them down at Best Buy 🙂

(And they were out of stock for ages, too...)

Kevin Myers said:Just jumping in here—I actually fix computers for a living, and honestly, my workload has been exploding ever since this OS hit the market... Not because the software itself is bad, heavens no, but just because of all the glitches... So, if you're one of those folks who loves crashing their system every month (or even more often), I highly recommend using this version... :P

Ahem... ahem...

System Info:
OS Name: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional
OS Version: 6.1.7600 N/A Build 7600

OS Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation
OS Configuration: Standalone Workstation
OS Build Type: Multiprocessor Free
Original Install Date: 10/28/2009, 1:52:19
System Type: x64-based PC
Hotfix(s): 72 Hotfix(s) Installed.

Which basically means... either you don't know what you're doing, or you're installing stuff you have no clue how to handle.

dustypuma5 said:I’ve got a bad feeling about that. They’re likely blocking specific URLs right at the router level.

Just imagine if you tried picking up some high-power wireless antenna—like an Air Live 1700, for instance—to snag a signal from someone outside the university network just to mess around.
But even then, you’d run straight into the same issues I mentioned earlier regarding torrents. 😁

I really don't buy the idea that they're just blocking by DNS name... I mean... I wouldn't set it up that way because you could easily bypass it just by typing in the IP address instead of the domain in your browser.

Then you've got SPI firewalls—honestly, most of them nowadays are SPI anyway.

And it works like this: the firewall just takes one look at the MIME-TYPE info inside the packet and goes... "Whoa, hold up! Flash? Absolutely not!"... so it just kills the packet right there and refuses to deliver it. Boom! Gone! Tossed straight into the trash!

jadeseal81 said:Yeah, but I think it really just comes down to whatever the IT admin at the university decides, because at some other colleges—and even the dorms—it’s totally wide open.

Sure, it might be "allowed," but that doesn't mean they aren't watching or keeping tabs on who's doing what. That's exactly why you see THESE KIND OF posts, and honestly, it's why people use apps that authenticate you on the network so your identity is tied to your activity.

Just stick to torrents if you want. But hey, when you eventually lose your campus internet access or end up getting a formal reprimand, you can ask yourself HOW and WHY.

You can't hide torrenting at the network level, not even with packet encryption. And hiding your identity is basically impossible once you're on an NSFNET-connected campus network. NSFNET is the backbone here, and they're the ones running the show for CERT in the US.

I mean, if you're willing to risk your enrollment or deal with legal headaches over a few gigs of movies or adult content... well, go for it. But NSFNET monitors all its networks and affiliated institutions. It's not like they're jumping on every little thing immediately, but... man, if I were in your shoes, I wouldn't play games like that. Especially not using someone else's hardware that you just happen to have access to. Plus, doing it on a weekend when "nobody's around" just makes it easier to blame the cleaning crew or some random glitch instead of you.

Cheers!
