I actually managed to sort out the issue on my own, almost immediately after I posted.
It might sound a bit unconventional... 🤷
Basically, if I plug the cable into the printer first and then connect it to the USB port, the computer fails to recognize the device. However, if I reverse the order—plugging the cable into the USB port before connecting it to the printer—everything works perfectly.
I generally only hook the printer up when I actually need to run a print job from my laptop.

I finally bit the bullet today and bought a dedicated USB cable for my Canon MP540, since the manufacturer—in their infinite wisdom—decided not to include one in the box.
The issue is this: I’ve gone through the installation wizard, and while it claims the drivers were successfully installed, everything falls apart when it reaches the stage where I'm supposed to connect the printer to my PC. My computer simply refuses to recognize the device; there's zero communication happening. I get a notification saying new hardware was detected and that the drivers are all set, but clearly, that's just wishful thinking if the system won't actually talk to the printer. I'm running Windows XP Professional SP2.
