This movie is truly top-tier. I actually watched it about a year ago—I still have a copy on disc at home. I was honestly blown away; it feels less like watching a film and more like sitting right there in the middle of a documentary where everything is unfolding inches from your face. The director is a straight-up genius. I’ve developed quite a passion for American indie cinema lately; I’ve tracked down almost every acclaimed piece out there, and most of them deserve a perfect rating. It’s fascinating how directors working with next to nothing can produce such incredible work. It really makes me wonder why our own filmmakers can't seem to capture that same magic. In recent years, you can count the decent films coming out of this country on one hand...☕
Honestly, I can't wrap my head around how people sit through those mindless movies.
Everyone has their own taste, I suppose, but I just don't have any interest in things like action flicks, slapstick comedies, or those overhyped Hollywood blockbusters.
Give me Claude Chabrol or Rohmer any day, or the Taviana brothers, or even those beautiful Romanian films—the kind of stuff most people tend to overlook.
Real lovers of art cinema and the classics found in a film archive will always be a minority...
I’ve always had a soft spot for Claude Chabrol’s films. I’ve mostly sourced them online; some were hard to track down without English subtitles, but honestly, that doesn't really bother me.
They aren't the kind of movies you just throw on in the background. I prefer watching them by myself, in total silence, because the pacing is deliberate and they really demand your full attention. They definitely aren't meant for the casual mainstream crowd—nobody in my circle actually enjoys them. They usually complain that they're boring or that "nothing much happens"...
But personally, they hit the spot perfectly. I’ve watched every single one at least twice already (and I'll probably go back for more soon enough).😁
"The Biches" is easily one of my favorites, followed by "The Butcher" and "The Unfaithful Wife." Really, his whole filmography is solid for me.👍
I’m inclined to agree with Michael Ortiz68 regarding Czech, Romanian, and Iranian cinema—they produce absolutely incredible films. I’ve watched pretty much everything available to me...
And we certainly had our share of brilliant directors—Tanhofer, Golik, Berković, even Mimica was top-tier... but these newer ones today... I honestly can't think of anyone worth praising...
I wouldn't argue that it all comes down to the budget; some truly great work was accomplished even with very little funding,
What the actual problem is, though... I find myself wondering that quite often...🤷
Is someone actually hunting for films by Jakov Sedlar?!
You’ve got to be kidding me... seriously...🙏🙏🙏
I just finished watching "Class," and honestly, I have nothing but praise for it. It felt incredibly grounded—nothing about it felt forced or unnecessary. The young actors were phenomenal; they really leaned into their roles and made them feel lived-in. We’ve seen the whole school violence theme tackled a thousand times before, but usually through that typical Hollywood lens. This time, we get an Estonian perspective on it, and it’s a refreshing change of pace. It’s definitely worth checking out if you want to see some truly promising new talent in cinema...👍
Personally, I’ve never been much for those overhyped, big-budget American blockbusters, though I’ve developed a massive appreciation for modern European cinema lately; they seem to have such incredible directors. I’ve sat through things like "story from the golden age," "death of Mr. Lazaresk," "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days"... there are plenty more where those came from. Honestly, if you aren't strictly tethered to the Hollywood machine, there is a wealth of brilliant Iranian, French, or Italian films just waiting to be discovered. It’s a shame that most people won't even give a movie a chance unless it’s an American or English production (at least in my neck of the woods...). As for me, I can always find something that actually suits my taste...
