GPU Buying Guide - (Read first post) in Desktops ·
Gary Anderson38 said:It’s literally the exact same packaging. Just repackaged.

With a rebrand like this, I kind of expected the 380 to equal the 290, and maybe the 390 would actually bring something new to the table. Instead, they just renamed the old generation of cards. Oh look, they bumped up the VRAM, haha...

It's pretty bad. At the end of the day, there's no new tech here and they aren't any faster. It's just overpriced, repackaged junk.

hahah, so even with a bit more GB, it doesn't really matter? I guess it still makes sense to just grab an older Radeon RX series card for cheaper if I can get basically the same performance, right?

Thomas Diaz53 said:Hey there.

I could use some help picking out a new graphics card. There's a good chance that in a few months—or maybe even a year or two—I'll be upgrading my whole setup, including the motherboard, hard drive, RAM, and CPU (probably moving toward a Z97-style build)... but for right now, here is what I'm currently running:

ASUS ROG motherboard (pcie2.0)
Intel Core i7 processor
DDR2 4GB 800

Seagate Barracuda HDD 500GB
I was looking at an old AMD ATI Radeon 4770 with 512MB of DDR5.

The Cooler Master case.
Some random 400W power supply... maybe?

So, here we go:

ASUS Radeon series card (DC2 2GB GDDR5) $444

XFX AMD Radeon series 2GB DDR5 $400

Since Linksys doesn't actually carry those ASUS Radeon series cards, I figured I'd just drop the link from eBuy.

Thinking about picking up an XFX AMD Radeon series card—specifically that R9 270A with 2GB of DDR5. I've been weighing the options lately, and I guess I’m just trying to figure out if it still holds any weight for basic setups. It’s a bit of an older spec, maybe, but I wonder if it can still handle some light lifting without being a total headache. Just something to chew on. $467

So, I've been looking at this Gigabyte AMD Radeon series card—specifically the R9 270X model with 2GB of GDDR5 and a 256-bit bus. It's an interesting little piece of hardware. I guess it's worth digging into if you're trying to figure out where it sits in a modern build, though maybe it's a bit dated for anyone looking for heavy lifting these days. Just something to keep on the radar. $551

So, I've been looking at this ASUS Radeon series card lately. It's an interesting little piece of hardware, though I guess it depends on what you're actually trying to get out of it. Just thinking about how it might fit into a build. $517 ...it’s basically the same thing as that ASUS model from Linksys... $475 (web)

I'm curious what you guys think about these two R7 265 cards. Also, any idea what kind of power supply I should be looking at? This Intel Core i7 processor pulls about 95W on its own, so I don't want to run into any issues.
So, how much is it actually worth to go for one of those R9 270 cards? And honestly, which one is the better bet?
So, I was wondering... do you think this Gigabyte board would actually fit inside this Cooler Master case? I'm looking at that specific one. $533 It looks like a massive amount...

I’m looking at getting a GPU strictly for playing PES and FIFA over the next few years... maybe some Killing Floor 2 too. Nothing really more demanding than that, I guess.

If you ask me, you'd be much better off going with an AMD Radeon series card right now. I wouldn't bother with the 270x, though; honestly, for what you're spending, you can grab an AMD Radeon RX 580 with 2GB instead. That’s going to hold up way longer. Since it's part of the newer lineup, it's definitely the smarter play for gaming. It should also fit into that Cooler Master case of yours without any real issues. Even something beefier like a SHAPPHIRE AMD Radeon series card with three fans—which usually runs about 8 inches long—would probably fit just fine.

Hey guys,

I was wondering if it’s actually worth dropping $3,900 on an AMD Radeon series card with 8GB of VRAM? I can't decide if those are still a good move, or if I should just hold out for something with more modern tech—or even just something faster and more efficient than the older AMD Radeon RX series. Basically, I'd love to hear what you all think about it.

It seems like everyone is hyping up the R9 285 right now. They’re saying it’s some kind of middle ground—not quite a 290 and not an R9 280 x, but somehow better than both while pulling less power. I guess I'm wondering if it's actually worth picking up, or if there's a better option out there. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

So, I've got this PC I put together about five months ago. I’m looking for some kind of gut check on the build—just wondering if you guys think it's any good. Thanks.

CPU: AMD A10 5800K clocked at 3.9 GHz, pushed up to 4.2 GHz via overclocking.
Motherboard: Asrock FM2A88X Extreme 4+
RAM: 12 GB of DDR3 running at 1333 MHz.
Graphics card: MSI GAMING R9 270X 4GB (the latest version in the 270X lineup)
Hard drive: Western Digital Blue 320 GB
Power Supply: FSP Raider 750W 80+
Akyga AKY008BK Case

So, I’ve got two exhaust fans sitting right by the processor—one on the side and one at the top. Since my Corsair mid-tower case actually has eight different slots for fans, I could move them around if I wanted to. Right now, both the motherboard and the graphics card are still under their three-year warranty, so I don't have to worry about breaking anything just yet.

Thanks to everyone for the help.

Guys, I could really use some help here. I know this isn't strictly what this sub is for, but I'm looking for some quick advice if anyone has a second.
So, I put together a brand-new PC back in late August of last year, but lately, I've been seeing these weird greenish lines flickering across my screen. They pop up randomly, then disappear, and when they do happen, my resolution just tanks. If I restart the machine, everything goes back to normal, but sometimes the whole image just freezes up, leaving me stuck staring at a white screen from whatever program was running.
Is there any chance my graphics card is starting to give out?

Thanks a ton. I know this is a bit off-topic, so sorry for the random post.

Hey, could use some help here

So, I'm putting together a build and was wondering what kind of power supply I'd actually need

Motherboard: ASUS 990FX Killer AM3+
GPU: MSI Gaming R9 290 4GB DDR5
CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K
RAM: 12 GB DDR3
SSD: Samsung 870 EVO 250GB
HDD: Samsung EVO 1 TB
Case: Fractal Design Case
Cooler: Cooler Master Nemesis

Thanks in advance 🙂

I don't know, I wouldn't really agree with that. Kinks has become way too expensive for what you actually get. You can find a 750W power supply without any trouble at all. Personally, I paid $133 for an EVGA 750W 80 PLUS Gold, and it handles my setup just fine—even when I'm overclocking both my CPU and GPU. Though, I guess I rarely see those kinds of performance gains unless you're running a much beefier rig than yours
.
My advice? Just keep looking. If you’re dead set on buying something brand new, maybe check out Yahoo or Best Buy. But honestly, if you want to save some cash, definitely take a look at Craigslist . For the exact same amount of money, you could probably snag a much more powerful power supply, or maybe even find a great deal for less

Gaming, mostly, but I do some work too.

Anyone interested in 12 GB of DDR3 RAM running at 1333 MHz? Or maybe we could do a trade for 16 GB if I chip in some extra cash.

I could use some advice on this, too. I'm finally trying to get this PC build wrapped up after dragging my feet for six months now, haha.

12 GB of DDR3 RAM running at 1333 MHz
2x4 GB Mushkin Silver Line
2x2 GB Kingmax

Any idea what this might be worth?

swiftmoose20 said:There was only one partition on there before. I just ran the HDD capacity restore tool and it's telling me the factory capacity is 2TB, even though it's only reporting 1TB right now. If I go ahead with the restore and it actually brings back that missing space, will my old data still be there, or am I looking at total data loss? I really need to know because everything important is on that drive.

It’ll wipe everything. Once you hit restore, it clears the whole thing and puts it back to how it was when it left the factory.

It’s possible, but I wouldn't count on it

That's why I usually suggest just sticking with WD (Western Digital) when you're looking at Hard Drives. Honestly, their Black or Red lines are probably your best bet. They cost a bit more, sure, but they're tougher and just more reliable overall. They don't tend to let you down as much as the cheaper stuff might.

swiftmoose20 said:I don't think so, but I mean, it was powered off. I only hooked it up after I finished installing macOS. I just tried it on another computer, and yeah, it still shows 1TB—well, specifically 1000.2 GB.

Hmm, honestly, you might as well just take it back and return it. I don't really have anything else to say. It's just impossible for it to read correctly one second and then fail the next; something isn't adding up here. There's a chance it could be a mistake on your end.

Like, is there any chance you accidentally split it into two partitions, like a C and a D drive? That might be why it's showing up that way.

swiftmoose20 said:It’s a Seagate BarraCuda 2 TB. Honestly, the drive isn't even a month old. I was trying to install macOS and ended up disconnecting the drive just to plug in a DVD writer. Not that it matters why. Anyway, once macOS was installed and I plugged the hard drive back in, I opened a partition manager, and suddenly the OS tells me I need to format the hard drive. The partition manager sees the full 2TB capacity, but when I check the BIOS, it claims the drive is only 1TB. :O

Does that mean the drive probably kicked the bucket?

It's possible. Did you maybe bump the hard drive or jiggle it while you were installing macOS or something like that?
