Proposal to abolish PDF PŽK in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Yeah, you could drag stuff like this out until the day after tomorrow...
But look, if five different people complain about the exact same behavior within three months—unless they're all in some weird conspiracy together—there's a massive chance that specific behavior actually exists...
Or maybe it's just a coincidence. I mean, I believe in coincidences, but I don't believe they happen by accident....

Here’s an example:
Topic 1

Topic 2

User comment on Topic 2

Another user's comment on the same topic

Response from a respected moderator....

And not a single admin showed up for any of these complaints to say, "Hey, maybe something isn't right here..."
And sorry for dragging up something that actually hurt my feelings and making me sound biased (and petty 😁), but everyone scratches where it itches, and honestly, I haven't been following the FBI lately so I don't have a bigger sample size to work with...

EDIT: I think I need to post this too...
When this happens, things go totally sideways and the mods are forced to hand out permanent bans...
Rachel Sanchez11 said:I don't think it was a coincidence before, either.

Dammit, we have a pattern here...

Am I being too quick to accuse? Well, what's the other side of the story? I haven't heard it yet, at least not with any actual arguments. It's just like when you shut down my laptop because you didn't have a real point, instead just rambling about domestic vs. international law and whatever else you throw in regarding "quality debate."

I'm laying out my arguments which show that three hours after our argument, you issued a warning under my post and then edited my post (without even trying to reach out via DM or a post to discuss changes—I mean, you have the right to do that, but usually, you ask the creator to edit the post, like how Dedy used to do it).

And your response to that is just, "No, you're imagining things."
So, I read the law quite often (I don't write it, that's probably my only post involving legal stuff, maybe my only one), but I have never seen anyone pull a move like yours.

Hm, a coincidence?
Hm, I don't think so...
You were probably expecting me to rebel there, which would have led to a flood of posts that would be flagged as OT or spam, making you the winner of our little spat while I ended up posting in the ban corner. But nope, I won't give you that satisfaction.
Too bad for you.

My evidence is right here, and anyone else running into similar issues can point to it, so you've lost your ability to manipulate the situation using that tool.

It's not hard to find stupid complaints; the hard part is finding a justified complaint that actually serves the common good!

Oh, and I actually have a theory as to why admins don't punish the mods, but I probably shouldn't say it out loud...

feraltrucker5 said:You have no idea what you're even talking about.☕ Moderators make mistakes—they often admit to them, too—and the admins step in to fix things. A lot of those pathetic complaints from trolls sent to the FBI usually don't even tell half the story, so it becomes easy to just assume the poor forum user is right and the admins and moderators are the villains in this whole saga.

This forum serves its purpose, and there's really no need to tear it down.☕

I haven't seen this side of the argument before...
So, you were mentioning that closed-off section where moderator errors get corrected..
I seem to remember a suggestion once about having an admin serve as a mod for the FBI stuff. Wouldn't that be more transparent?

And please, don't start dumping a hundred links here to stupid complaints; it's not up for debate that there are plenty of dumb ones out there.
What *is* debatable is why that one smart person is being labeled as stupid.
Besides, nobody is actually attacking the mods. I always say I admire the people who spend hours cleaning up trash and dealing with people on some random forum, all for absolutely zero pay...
If someone files a complaint, it doesn't necessarily mean they're targeting the mods or the admins, even if that's how you guys choose to perceive it. And honestly, it's funny how there are always five fellow mods ready to jump in and defend their own..
It reminds me of that old trope about politicians—when a doctor, a professor, or a judge gets busted for taking bribes, the first thing one of their colleagues says is: "Well, we should mention that the vast majority of doctors do their jobs honorably..."
😁

Just a few questions:
- Have you mods ever actually asked why the forum is unavailable in that closed-off corner of yours?
- Do you really think it's not a loss that the forum lost several members who actually knew how to write great posts (we can all think of someone)
- Do you honestly think it's okay that every fifteen days we have a complaint, like against unknown, regarding people being treated unfairly, and not a single admin responds to any of them? You've even got one active right now.
- Are actual, sensible forum complaints even discussed in that private little corner of yours?
- Can someone provide a list of topics from that private section...
You don't need to post the full threads, just a list of the topics...

I think it's pretty ridiculous that you're jumping in to defend everyone when nobody attacked the moderators. We're just attacking the idea that moderators and admins are flawless, perfect beings.

If you're defending that notion, then I don't think there's a problem with this thread, and it's definitely justified.

But, if we look at everything through the lens of this being a private forum where the mods live by two rules:
1. I am always right.
2. When I'm not right, Rule 1 still applies.

Then we arrive at the point where this thread becomes "problematic." But with that logic, the FBI section becomes problematic too, because it just becomes a place where fools—who have this illusion they can actually change anything—go to file complaints. Even though, well, fools have a right to the truth. Just tell people straight up: your complaints are useless, and then there will be way fewer problems.
We'll all know where we stand, and then things will be much clearer.

Yes, yes, it's a total joke of a sub-forum, but then again, it is quite a fun little joke... 😂

Let's just skip over hollowtrucker77. He's just another capitalist before the guy who actually handed us the rope...

Andrew Stewart3 said:Look, I see my last post didn't quite land, so let me clarify what I meant.
In my view, the FBI has the same basic function as the rest of the forum—generating as many clicks as possible so the owner looks good to advertisers. (You already covered that part; my first point was an addition to it).
So, even though I'm actually in favor of getting rid of it, my opinion is totally irrelevant anyway.

Alright, let's not get into a huge fight about this....
The whole point of this entire site is clicks, and those come from having a variety of topics because that guarantees Google will pick them up during indexing...
I highly doubt anyone is typing "how long am I banned for" or "looking for a replacement for the moderator" into Google...
😁

Your opinion is just as valid as mine. Trust me, the editors will take it into account, so there's no point in being stubborn about it...
😂

I wouldn't go so far as to say hollowtrucker77 is acting all high and mighty, though I guess you’re entitled to your own take on it...
I honestly think the mods are actually being pretty reasonable when they have to step in during those weird situations sometimes....

And seriously, what is actually going on with you? Am I seeing this right, or did you actually sign off on exactly what I wrote?
It was an interesting one; maybe we'll even get some snow in the morning....

Andrew Stewart3 said:The FBI has one main purpose, just like Rachel Sanchez11 pointed out—it's all about driving up click rates.

Actually, I didn't say that...
I guess the FBI exists to funnel all that frustration into one tiny little corner where the cops don't even need long batons to crack down on whoever's at fault...
Everything else is just about keeping those click numbers up....

No doubt about it, this is easily the highest quality forum in the digital space right now. It’ll stay that way for a long time and keep its current traffic levels. And honestly, the guy running the show knows that all too well.

Look, the user base is already so huge that any move to squeeze out even another 10%—which is basically the ceiling anyway—would be massive. From a purely economic standpoint, it's just not worth the headache.
But, when you look at the sheer quality here and how this forum sits in the American online landscape, I feel like the owner owes it to us to make this a nicer, more ACCESSIBLE, better place to hang out.
The problem is, he'll probably never realize that it was you guys and your posts that actually made him the owner of the best forum around. He thinks he did it all himself.

Sure, he's set for success in the short term, but in the long run? I think he's totally missing the mark.

darkseal15 said:See, I didn't realize that part was in bold.
I thought hollowtrucker77 was a super-moderator, meaning he was ranked above the "regular" mods, and that because he runs this specific thread, he had the authority to rule on appeals.

So, that's not how it works?

(Can someone just confirm that's not the case? It could be hollowtrucker77 himself, doesn't matter.)

One more thing—an appeal isn't an attack. You could argue it's more like criticism than an assault. It's just that people have this habit of treating any bit of criticism like a personal attack.

Got it, but that actually supports my suggestion.

And that’s why we shouldn't scrap the FBI section. It serves its purpose. It funnels all the dissatisfied users into one place so the mods can deal with them. That's its function. Its job isn't to resolve an actual appeal. Maybe we should just rename it: Wishes and Futile Complaints. Description: Complain all you want and get banned..

I agree with everything, especially the bolded part.
But renaming the thread definitely means getting rid of it in its current form.
So, it all still points back to my original proposal.

Let's try to make sense of the hierarchy here...
From what I gather, supermoderators aren't actually above the moderators—like, they aren't their bosses. They were basically brought in with one extra perk: if a specific sub-forum is flying solo without a moderator present and things start going off the rails, no other regular mod can step in to fix it because it's technically not their territory, according to the rules. If the admin isn't online and the supermod is the only one with global permissions, then chaos is basically inevitable.
Now, the superadmin does have the right to moderate the entire site, but they aren't the moderator's boss either; they can't just discipline a mod or tell them how to do their job.
That setup solves the chaos problem, though, because it increases the odds that at least one mod, an admin, or a supermod will be online when things get messy.
But usually, supermods stay out of it because they don't want to step on their colleagues' toes, so that rule is really just for emergencies...

One more thing—an appeal isn't an attack. You could probably view it more as criticism rather than a personal strike. It's just that people tend to mistake criticism for a personal attack.

Anytime you call someone out for not doing their job well, they're going to take it personally. I get your point, but expecting people to actually practice self-reflection? That's basically Star Trek fantasy to me...

Got it, but that all supports my suggestion.

I agree with everything, especially the bolded parts.
But hey, renaming the section definitely means changing it from its original form.
So, it all still backs up what I was proposing.

Renaming the section was just irony. I doubt the FBI is going to change its name, and the only person who should actually be answering these things won't show up anyway. He stays in the shadows behind the scenes, and by staying hidden, he avoids taking any responsibility.
But mark my words, the admin will probably jump in soon to shut this thread down because they have the right to. This is a private forum, after all, and the owner's will is law here. If the thread gets closed and it turns out they were just following the owner's wishes, I think you'll have a pretty clear idea of where they stand on all this.
Proposal to abolish PDF PŽK in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Let's look at this situation.

An attack on a subforum should really be an attack on the moderator. But that shouldn't be the case here. hollowtrucker77 is actually one of the best mods we have on this site, even if I didn't think so when he first showed up. I guess I just didn't give him a full hundred days to prove himself, but man, he’s actually surprised me.
Secondly, the fact is that some weird hierarchy has taken over the forum lately; things have gotten way more heavy-handed (someone like the Administrator or whatever).
Thirdly, people are constantly complaining on the FBI section, and it’s become this standard routine where every single complaint gets brushed off as some "unserious attempt" to overthrow the mod—attempts that never work anyway, and almost none of these complaints ever lead to anything positive. Just a heads-up: hollowtrucker77 really tries to separate the wheat from the chaff, but he isn't getting any support from the higher-ups. His job is to moderate serious complaints, not to act as the final judge in them. And that’s what he does—he keeps the thread open, cleans out the spam and the parasites, but nobody from the people who are *supposed* to respond to the complaint shows up, so there's just silence for days.
Then, the people starting these threads lose their minds because they feel like nobody gives a damn about them—which, let's be honest, is true 😁—so they start going absolutely nuclear in every language possible. Then come the warnings, the points, the bans, and it turns out the user actually deserved the ban in the first place.

Fourthly, once, an admin called my constructive argument "acting like someone's lawyer" just because I was defending a certain right, and then she shut the whole thread down. I sent her a private message asking for an apology since I didn't consider myself anyone's lawyer. She didn't reply. And when I actually complimented her, saying it was nice to finally have an admin who actually responds to DMs, she shot back that she had better things to do than answer a PM where I was being all dramatic about wanting an apology. This tells you everything you need to know: this esteemed admin has much more important things to do than deal with your nonsense. She has the power, she uses it, and she never questions her own calls because, frankly, we aren't worth her time to sit and rethink things.

So, I've confirmed my suspicions, and I'll tell you guys again, though I've said it plenty of times already.
Reddit is privately owned and, honestly, it’s technically maintained pretty poorly. Since it’s private property, the owner can basically do whatever they want. Because of that, users don't have much ground to stand on when complaining about moderators and how they behave, because every single one of them was chosen by the owner to represent his interests and protect his property. When you look at it that way, every complaint is just a waste of breath.

So, that’s how it stands. Next time you feel the urge to complain, just remember that the moderators are working for free (well, maybe not for free—I actually started a thread about that on the psychology board once) and remember that the forum hasn't been running well for years. Seriously, call up any hosting service and ask what it would cost to host a forum like this. You’ll quickly realize the owner couldn't care less about the site, and if he doesn't care about the site, he doesn't care about the users. And if he doesn't care about the users, then the moderators are just his extended arm—they get the same "don't care" impulse from him, and so they don't care about you either. It always stinks from the top down.

You can choose to accept this reality, stay true to yourself, and be who you are despite it all. Or, you can spend hours here arguing in a losing battle. Because at the end of the day, this is a private forum...

You guys are just numbers. You are nothing more than unique clicks that the owner displays to advertisers. The only thing that makes you "unique" is the statistic: "we have x0,000 unique clicks every day." When you stop clicking, someone else will take your place. And that other person won't be any different from you, even if you're clicking based on some deep philosophy about topics that need to radically change the world, while that other guy is just some random teenager opening threads like: "I've never done it..."
And both you and he are just tiny clicks, one of thousands of others that make up the "strength" of this forum.

That’s why we shouldn't abolish the FBI section. It serves its purpose. It channels the dissatisfied people so they can be ignored. That is its function. Its job isn't to resolve a potential complaint. Maybe we should just rename it: "Wishes and Futile Complaints." Description: Complain all you want, and get banned...

It honestly drives me absolutely insane when people feel the need to jump in just to correct someone's spelling or grammar...
In my opinion, that obsessive urge to correct others says way more about their own mental state than it does about the person they're correcting...
But whatever, I guess it's allowed on this forum—you can make mistakes, and you can be one of those people who corrects them...
Let them live their lives, I suppose; some people just have to find someone to lecture, even if it's just here...

I find myself turning the car around halfway to work because I’m suddenly gripped by this doubt about whether I shut everything off at home.
There was one time I actually made my entire family turn back halfway through a trip because I kept talking out loud to myself about my anxieties, and they eventually just snapped—they told me it was better to just go back and check than to keep listening to me spiral!

I've started practicing a little ritual where I say things out loud: "The stove is off, the lights are out..."
That way, when those intrusive thoughts hit later, I can actually recall the specific moments when I spoke those actions aloud.

Look, we live in the age of statistics. These 50 posts right here represent maybe 0.00..01% of the total volume, and that percentage is always going to stay tiny because, as Willard says, this forum is packed with idiots who just got unlimited data and fill it with threads that have zero brain cells behind them.
But statistics don't care about feelings; to her, an IP address hit is just a number, and the actual user behind that hit doesn't mean a thing.
