Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
Alexander Diaz4 said:Honestly, some folks on here would probably be happier just switching back to Windows 3.1, unplugging their ethernet cables, and heading straight back to the Stone Age.

Hey, at least 3.1 was actually optimized.

Well, Windows 10 isn't.

Richard Lee47 said:It’s not even hacking, really. You just tweak two commands and you're good to go. Everything runs perfectly with the updates, no issues at all.

I mean, why would anyone even bother with this bloated OS? It's basically turning into an Android tablet at this point.

At my office, we have computers sitting around that are seven or eight years old, if not older, and they run dozens of Linux setups just fine.

Windows 11 doesn't actually have massive hardware requirements.
And it's definitely not true that everything older than the 3rd gen AMD is unsupported. For instance, I’m running a Ryzen 1600 and it works perfectly without needing any weird workarounds. The motherboard I picked up two years ago for $150 supports TPM and everything just works smoothly.

My bad, Windows 11 supports the 2nd gen AMD Ryzen and the 8th gen Intel or higher.

The thing is, the 3rd and 4th gens would run Windows 11 without breaking a sweat, so why did they cut them off?

Like, an i7 7700 won't run Windows 11.
That’s just plain unfair.

The absolute worst part about this whole situation is how perfectly good, high-end hardware is being rendered totally useless.
So much great equipment that still works just fine is going to end up sitting in a landfill somewhere.
You can only imagine the fallout from that, both for the economy and the environment.
Honestly, my hair almost stood on end when I saw the system requirements for Windows 11.
Anything older than an AMD 3rd gen processor is basically out of luck.
Pretty much everything made before 2017 won't run Windows 11, even though it totally COULD.

It feels like Windows is regressing, like it’s moving backward.
I really hope more people wake up and the market shifts in a different direction, because what Microsoft is doing right now is just gross.
Or maybe people will be like me—keep one setup with Windows just for gaming, and run everything else on other operating systems.

Linux is basically a safe haven for the future since the industry is systematically phasing out older operating systems.

With every single update, Windows just gets heavier, clunkier, and way less user-friendly.
But hey, there actually is a solution to this—check out my post here:

The other day I stumbled upon a video on YouTube about the downfall of uTorrent—you know, how they totally ruined it.
It actually made me laugh because I’m still rocking that old uTorrent version 2.2.1 from back in 2011.
After that specific version, they started stuffing every update with bloatware until the whole thing became absolute garbage.
Honestly, once you apply a few tweaks, 2.2.1 is pretty much perfect.

It’s the exact same story with operating systems.
I mean, a fully updated Windows 10 will gobble up 3 to 5 GB of RAM just sitting idle. If you strip away all the bloat and that non-essential Microsoft junk, it drops down to maybe a gigabyte or so.

There isn't anything specifically for the Ryzen 5 5600G
Just stick with Windows 10 or Windows 11, 64-bit

Windows and actual system control are basically polar opposites at this point, no matter which version you're running.
Just grab Arch Linux and take charge.

I've been using Debian for quite a while now, but let's be real—between gaming, Microsoft Office, and a whole bunch of niche software I rely on, things just aren't there for Linux.

You're really going to have to back that up. What does Windows 10 actually offer that Windows 7 doesn't?
Aside from driver support that big corporations are basically withholding because they want everyone forced onto these dumbed-down versions where we lose more and more control over our own OS.

Just picked up a new setup with a Ryzen 5 processor and integrated graphics, only to find out that Intel doesn't support Windows 7 anymore 👎

I mean, sure, you could technically install Win7, but getting the drivers to actually work? Forget about it.

So, I guess it's finally time to say goodbye to what was easily the second-best version of Windows ever made and move on to something more robust—and arguably much more annoying.

Farewell, Windows 7. You were good to me.

Telebit is giving me the option to tweak the configuration for an extra $67.
So, including shipping, we're looking at a grand total of $1667.

Now I'm stuck. What's the move?
Do I take the gamble on this motherboard? Apparently, some folks are running into headaches when they pair it with this specific CPU.

Or should I just pull the plug on the order and learn how to build everything again with a different board?

I've only got two days left before this offer expires.

They haven't gotten back to me yet since I sent my assembly inquiry over on Saturday,
and I went ahead and ordered everything on Sunday—I guess I was just being impatient.

Well, it's Monday now, so I'll give them a call in about thirty minutes once they open up.

I'm honestly a little confused, though. I saw this one YouTuber put together this exact same configuration and everything worked perfectly for him:

But then, on the flip side, this guy was having major issues with this specific CPU and motherboard combo:
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?t...reboots.370756
Plus, I did a quick Google search and found plenty of other people swearing that this pairing is just problematic.

For some folks, the trouble didn't even show up until a week after they built it.

Here are a few comments I found:

"Do not get the MSI B550M Pro VDH-Wifi motherboard if you're going to get a 5600g. I've been fighting this motherboard for a month trying everything possible to get it to work and I'm always right back to square 1. It's rebooting constantly. Updated bios about 45 times at least. Tried every bios version back to june 2021. Can't even get to anything in the bios because any time i move the mouse or touch a key it reboots. Or it won't post, and if it starts to post, mouse or keyboard input makes it reboot again. Check reviews of the motherboard on amazon and newegg before getting it."

"I cannot get mine to work at all. I have the exact same build he recommended and no matter what I do it keeps rebooting on me before I can install windows. I've updates bios, I can't do much inside the bios because it shuts off before I can do anything. I'm so frustrated. Checking reviews soooo many people are having the same issue with the 5600g"

"Hello scattervolt. I am planning on using this build in a few months. I’ve researched all of the parts and found out that the motherboard seems to be defective for a lot of people. Did you have any problems with it at all?"

And he replied to him:
"Motherboard defectiveness isn't necessarily a brand issue. Every once and a while a motherboard won't pass quality control and that's where you get some defective items here and there. Though, if you're basing your conclusion off of Amazon reviews, then I'd be skeptical about a lot of those because half of the 1 star reviews are bogus lol. Use Newegg for more accurate reviews."

So, I'm thinking it might be safer to just pick a different motherboard altogether. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Hey everyone, I need some help here,

So, I was doing a little digging online and stumbled upon someone claiming that this specific combo—the MSI B550M PRO-VHD motherboard paired with an AMD RYZEN 5 5600G—just doesn't work.
The system gets stuck in a constant reboot loop.

He did his own homework and found a few threads on Reddit and some Amazon reviews that seem to back up what he's saying.

He tried everything he could think of, including flashing the BIOS to the latest version, but no luck.
When he reached out to MSI support, they basically brushed him off and told him to talk to the retailer instead.
He’s convinced MSI knows about this issue but is just ignoring it, even though they officially claim the board supports that CPU.

Here's my dilemma: I already placed the order. It's a "buy now, pay later" situation, so I haven't actually sent the money yet.
I'm going to call them tomorrow to see if I can swap things out before it processes.
I want to grab a different motherboard instead of this one.
Does anyone have a solid recommendation to replace this MSI B550M PRO-VHD?

Just to recap, here is the build I currently have on order:

Motherboard:

SSD:

Power Supply:

wiredotter14 said:So, that Power Supply crimsonstag84 was pointing out is fine.

If you want to step it up a notch, look for Gold efficiency—better quality overall:

EDIT:
He listed them but they were out of stock... missed that.
With this setup, you can pretty much throw almost any GPU in there later.
https://www.telebit.com/power-supply-unit-gold-36mj.html
The Seasonic comes with a 5-year warranty.

As for GPUs... right now, the market is a total disaster. A decent card costs a fortune; it’ll blow your budget wide open.
Plus, if you're buying a dedicated GPU from the jump, you don't need a processor with integrated graphics.
If you want a GPU right away, tell me your total budget, but I wouldn't go over $3--$1333 more than that.
It's highly likely the GPU market will stabilize in a year or so, so you might land a much better deal then.

And whenever you finally do pull the trigger on a GPU... it depends on what you actually need and what you play. Maybe something like a 6600 XT (which is sitting around $1667, but should be closer to... maybe $200-$250)

Oh, I didn't realize the GPU situation was that messy.
Maybe I got a little ahead of myself.
I don't really need a PC that can crush massive AAA titles anyway—they don't interest me, and honestly, modern AAA gaming feels kind of dull.
That first setup crimsonstag84 suggested is already more than enough for what I actually care about doing.

Never messed with Telebit before (but they’re a legitimate outfit, not some shady basement operation). Your best bet is to just give them a ring and ask if they can handle the assembly.

thanks

What kind of graphics card would you recommend for this build?

Man, I think I've officially caught the PC building bug.
Best PC Emulator setups? in Desktops ·
Thanks everyone! I'll probably just pull the trigger on this order once I get home from work today.

I'm planning to grab a beefier Power Supply just to leave some wiggle room in case I decide to pick up a GPU down the road.

Quick question about the assembly—since I'm getting everything from the same shop, can they put it all together for me? I didn't see a specific build service listed on their site, so should I give them a call or something?
Best PC Emulator setups? in Desktops ·
Alright, here's what I've got so far:

CPU:

MBO:

SSD:

Power Supply:

RAM:

Case:

When I add this to my cart on Amazon, it comes out to about $1517$
. Could you please double-check everything one more time? I think I'm finally ready to pull the trigger and order this.

I might swap out this SSD for a 1TB version instead, so if you have any recommendations, let me know!

Also, total "dumb question" here, but will this order include everything I actually need for the build?
Like cables, wires, screws, mounting brackets...?
And I'm assuming I'll need some thermal paste too, right?

Thanks,
Does anyone have a good guide for building a PC? I've never actually put together my own rig before.

Do I need to buy things like cables, screws, and stuff like that separately?

I know it sounds a bit silly, but this is all brand new to me.
