There's some recommendation about not mixing people from different households at the tables 😂 Honestly, this task force and their measures are just getting more and more ridiculous

High schoolers could easily switch to online learning; let's face it, they aren't going to follow precautions anyway.

slysurfer14 said:I think my answer was a bit off... you didn't really clarify how sick those kids actually were. Like, I mean, testing positive and being isolated is one thing, but were they actually *sick* sick?

Corona isn't really a risk for the kids themselves; the danger is for the adults living under the same roof. Usually, we're talking about parents, grandparents, and the rest of the household.

People dying is .....

Did you say something I didn't already expect? I know exactly what you're going to say before you say it. 🍿

🤣
🤦

Is there a specific reason why you’re avoiding looking into this?

It suits you to have everything open because your husband, Chloe Sanchez, plays weddings for a living. It doesn't matter to me. So be it.

The idea of forced vaccinations being implemented elsewhere by other countries appeals to me even less.

I'm just pulling for online stimulus and direct aid, that's all. Besides, I'm not going into the restricted sections of a cafe anyway.

How many kids were actually sick last school year, and I don't mean just testing positive, but actually sick?
SO SCHOOL COULD HAVE JUST RUN TOTALLY NORMALLY WITHOUT ALL THE LOCKDOWNS OR WHATEVER.

In our neck of the woods, we lost a mother of three, a homemaker, a cook's husband, and several others are dealing with post-Corona syndrome.

I know you'll probably say, "So what? People die anyway," because your empathy is legendary. No need to even try.

slysurfer14 said:You're betting wrong. If you have 50% vaccination and another 30% who already had it, even if someone else catches it, whole schools or companies won't just sit home... testing will stop and only the truly sick will stay home, not those folks in Olešč who don't have a thing.

So, 50% vaccinated, but immunity only lasts three months? In Israel, 85% of hospitalized patients are those who were double-vaccinated.

I mean, damn, whoever wanted to get vaccinated did it. The older folks are holding up relatively well since they mostly got the shot. Now the big question is whether we need to keep slowing down the pandemic through measures all year long—which might mean three more small waves—or if we should just let everything unravel in a few months.

The President is just looking at the piggy bank and the US economy for 2023. He’s gotta WinCoronavirus© before then, and hopefully before the next major crisis hits.
Instead of following official rules, we're probably going to see schools and businesses shutting down on their own initiative, simply because there won't be anyone left to work when we all get sick at once.

The funniest part is going to be that loud minority shouting right now about how the vaccine is garbage, only to spend next month attacking the system because it didn't do enough to stop or soften the blow. I bet you anything. 😵

Personally, I think having three smaller waves would be the better way to go.🤔

mellowskipper said:The issue here is that in our neck of the woods, one doesn't necessarily rule out the other...

Nowhere, really. But look at what’s going down in France, Canada, and Austria—parents are pulling their kids out of school because of mandatory vaccination laws. Compare that to the vibe here, and my impression is that people have just decided to sit back and eat popcorn. 🍿
And then they give us those nice little warnings that the peak of the epidemic will hit in a month, just so they can say "we didn't know."

mellowskipper said:They don't need to pick a fight with anyone. The question remains: are these measures epidemiological or purely political?

It depends on whether they're being brought to us by epidemiologists or politicians.

mellowskipper said:They’re reopening bars and restaurants, indoor concerts are starting back up, and they're even hinting at potentially lifting restrictions altogether. And yet, we’re still stuck doing everything online?! I mean, seriously—who is actually being logical here?

Yeah, it’s an interesting move. They're announcing this just as the peak of the epidemic is predicted for late September and early October.

The situation is actually worse than it was this time last year if you look at the hospitalization numbers.

Seems like they decided to walk a razor-thin line right next to the crowd protesting any kind of restrictions.

At the same time, you look at Israel, where they've said vaccination won't stop the third wave and more measures are needed... but over here, dealing with people who are hard to reason with is such a headache that it's easier to just fold your arms and grab some popcorn.

mellowskipper said:I mean, what would even be the argument or justification for doing things online at this stage?

Well, there's already a recommendation to keep the grade levels separate. DP and dot are mixed groups anyway.

I'm hoping they'll recommend moving to Model C today; if anyone is feeling particularly ambitious, they can always try mixing the class groups.

I’ve cut back on the transcription work to the bare minimum. It’s mostly just talking and getting plenty of practice, and that’s really all there is to it.

electricfalcon77 said:I'm not quite sure which specific methods you're referring to, but there's a very good reason why nobody relied on online instructions before this pandemic hit. Traditionally, students and instructors have always sat down face-to-face for math, physics, and other subjects.

In my experience working as a teaching assistant, I've helped students remotely, and let me tell you—it is definitely not easy, even when you have a rock-solid internet connection.

Fair enough... a teaching assistant. You’re working with students who actually need the help, which is a different ballgame.

That's not just some kid looking for a quick clarification or a little extra practice.
In my subject, nobody needed tutoring just to scrape by with a passing grade, though I have heard of a few people aiming for an A.

mellowskipper said:That’s where I get tripped up too. Screens are constantly flipping around, they have to transcribe everything, and then the professor is trying to explain things and quiz them at the exact same time.
In the end, they don't even finish copying it down, so they have to go back and do it later—and then if they need her to explain something else on top of that... it's just a mess. Honestly, teaching math online is a total nightmare.

Honestly, all this constant copying seems weird to me. Sure, show a few problems as an example, but after that, it should just be practice, practice, and more practice using the workbook.
The focus should be on maximizing practice, not maximizing transcription.
2021/2022 School Year in Coronavirus ·
When people claim screen sharing eats up all their time, I start questioning if they’re actually students. It's usually someone who doesn't know where to click; for anyone else, it's a split-second task.

Susan James said:So, what's stopping you? If things are working so smoothly for you, why not just keep running everything exactly the way you are now?

If I had my way, I'd keep running everything according to Model C indefinitely. 🤷

Look, we didn't have any technical glitches over here, so you could have just coordinated with the students to find a time that actually works for everyone. Staying late for a 6th or 7th period when we're all already dead on our feet isn't exactly doing you any favors.

Larry Walker24 said:Look, I know a guy who smoked a pack a day his whole life and lived to be 90, but I also know a woman who never touched a cigarette in her life and died of lung cancer at 50.

We could go on like this forever.

She probably lived in a basement or worked somewhere with high radon levels. That gas will kill you just as dead without ever needing to light up a single cigarette.

It's funny how people always link cigarettes to lung cancer, while radon seems like a total mystery to most. You can find it in basements all over Washington, D.C., if you look for it.

slysurfer14 said:Look, I've gotten the point. People are dying every single day. My sister-in-law ended up in the hospital today and we still don't even know what happened...
So now we aren't allowed to breathe because someone got vaccinated and landed in the 😁hospital? Who's to say the shots aren't the reason they're lying there? I know two people who caught Corona right after their shots and now both are dead... died because of the vaccine, so what now?

I also knew a woman who passed away after getting vaccinated. Then people act surprised when some healthcare workers decide they aren't interested in getting the shot.
