Mouse recommendations? in Computer Peripherals ·
There’s that one from Thanko and this one from JSCO: http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/14/j...npage_engadget You could probably track them down online somewhere.

(Just Google the mouse's name along with "order," "shop," or whatever. It shouldn't be too hard.)

I'm honestly not sure, but my best guess is 🙂 either there's a setting tucked away in your BIOS—maybe something related to the Numlock state, if you can even tell by looking at the indicator lights—or you could head over to the Device Manager, pull up the properties for those specific devices, and see if there's a setting in there worth tweaking.

So, you've got the one from Thanko and this model over from JSCO: http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/14/j...npage_engadget You can probably track them down online somewhere if you look around.

It exists, sure—I just have no clue how you'd actually get your hands on them. I doubt you'll find them here in the States, and honestly, I'm not sure if you could even find a way to buy them online.

Maybe the easiest route would be to hand your mouse over to a friend who’s handy with tech—someone who could tear it down to extract the click components or try some DIY modifications—though, I can't say for certain if you could pull that off without completely breaking the mouse's functionality.🙂

True enough, I end up burning twice the energy just for two extra clicks 🙄

It’s also handy that I can "pull" them out of a maximized state—but if that setting is off, I’m stuck having to click manually again

Ah, I see what you mean now. It's called "Snap"—if you just type "snap" into the Windows search bar, it should take you right where you need to go...

I once turned off the setting that automatically maximizes a window when I drag it to the top of the screen, and now I can't seem to find where to toggle it back on.
I think I disabled it while I was messing around with the Ease of Access settings and a few other things.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Check your Device Manager to see if the sound card is actually being recognized—specifically, look to see if there’s a little yellow exclamation mark next to it indicating a driver issue. Also, what kind of audio setup are we talking about here? Is it just an integrated chip on the motherboard or a dedicated adapter?
It could be anything from a setting tucked away in the BIOS that isn't enabled properly—I'm not sure which motherboard you're running—to a driver that simply didn't install right. You really need to verify that in the Device Manager first.
That should give you a starting point, and others will likely chime in with more ideas soon. Honestly, this might be better suited for a different thread; you'll probably get much faster help if you just start a new topic over at the IT Help service PDF section.

That would be a huge help to him (he's asking how to get rid of it)

This isn't really the right place for this discussion—you should probably head over to the IT Help Service subforum... (or maybe the "Security" PDF, I can't quite remember). That’s your best bet if you actually want to get some help.

Well, looking at what was mentioned above, I'm not entirely sure what's triggering this—I went through the process of an upgrade from RC to RTM myself, though that might just be a coincidence.
It's not like I'm some outlier here; there are plenty of people online dealing with this exact issue (and who knows how many others are facing it without even realizing it)

Is anyone else having trouble getting the Event Viewer to run? Also, do you have Windows Update turned on?

If it isn't working—and there's a pretty good chance it won't be—this should do the trick.
So I compared the folder permissions to c:\windows\system32\logfiles\wmi\RTbackup to a working machine. Navigate to RTbackup properties and check security settings. It requires SYSTEM - full control. I added this permission and rebooted PC to fix the issue. I can now access my event viewer.

My PC has been acting a bit strange lately—sometimes it tries to wake from hibernation only to immediately slip right back into it. It happened about an hour ago, but when I tried to restart, I was met with a Blue Screen of Death before I could even read the error code. Once I managed to boot back up normally, I tried opening the Event Viewer, but nothing would launch—not even the Windows event log service.

I finally got it working, though naturally, I've lost all the logs between today and March 14, 2010. 😁

Amy Rivera66 said:Don't try to scare me—just tell me some of the actual benefits. Why would anyone even want to buy this? 😬

I’ve only got a few hours left and I’m still stuck on the second slide.
I honestly have no clue what subheadings I should even use for this presentation. 🙂

Look, I'm saying it's easy for you—just head over to the Microsoft website where they talk about Windows 7 and the translations (there might even be an American English version).
You really just need to focus on all the major differences between Windows 98 and Windows 7...
The gap between them is massive, so if you actually wanted to do a decent job, it wouldn't be a small task—man, if you want to do it right. But if you're just looking to pass... start with that first part.

Amy Rivera66 said:Hey everyone! I've been assigned a project to put together a presentation about Windows 7. Basically, to pass this class, I have to "convince" my computer science professor—acting as a business owner—to invest in Windows 7 and upgrade all their old licenses from previous versions (which definitely isn't cheap).

If anyone has any materials that might help, or if you just know some solid pros and cons regarding the switch to Windows 7, please let me know here or shoot me a DM!
Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙂 🙂

Well, I'd suggest heading over to the Microsoft website to see how they market Windows 7, or maybe find a promo video or presentation on YouTube—just build a narrative based on that style...
You could also check out some tech forums where people discuss the transition; if you find enough info on the benefits of Windows 7, you'll be set—though that might be total overkill.

Go ahead and run the Windows update; once you get to the optional updates section, just select the English Language pack.

Regarding Google Search, I've just realized something that isn't quite sitting right with me...

Does anyone know how to prevent Google Search from integrating itself into the Windows search via the Start menu? Every time I hit the Start menu and try to search Everything, Google Search pops up instead—which is definitely not what I'm looking for.

slyrider13 said:It isn't just about the indexing speed... quite simply, I'm not happy with how it displays the search results.

Exactly—plus the options are scattered all over the place...
The layout is just messy. Sometimes I get the feeling the main goal for Vista and 7 was just to make everything look flashy, full of graphics and "fancy" aesthetics. But when things aren't functional, that's a different story. It feels like it was designed for kids.

For me, this feels like a step backward compared to searching in Windows XP.
As for the indexing itself, it doesn't bother me that much; an optimization reduces my indexer priority, but then it becomes painfully slow. With Google, however, I can see exactly what is being indexed at any given moment...

I actually have one small gripe with Google as well, which is the lack of a simple toggle between searching file content and searching by filename. Still, it's alright—better than what we have here.
It would also be great if you could choose whether to use "whole words only" or other settings during every single search.

Thanks so much, you’re seriously saving me a massive headache here. I pinned it to my taskbar immediately—it’s already a huge step up from what I was using.

It’s definitely more efficient (does exactly what it’s supposed to) and feels way more powerful, especially with how it sorts and displays the results.
Thanks again.

And just how many files are we talking about here? If you had a larger collection of Word docs and PDFs, you’d really see how well that search function performs.

It’s running like a dream for me too—honestly, I think the OS itself is just inherently buggy sometimes. 😁

I went into my Advanced Indexing Options and disabled content indexing for file types like htm, html, PDFs, doc, docx, and rtf.

You guys might want to consider doing the same. I just don't have any use for searching through the actual content—I can always use specific software to search a PDF, and I haven't even needed to dig through a .doc file yet.
It honestly just clutters up my searches with a bunch of junk results when I'm looking for a specific file.
I’ve set it to index only my D: drive and my desktop, so we'll see how it performs—I'm thinking it should be fine.
