Boraska got invited to the SD anniversary party... I wonder if they sent invites to Puljko, Ivošević, and Đerek too.

I guess I'm with Zachary Anderson20 on this one. All these announcements from Markey and these big project designs feel like more of the same stuff we've seen from every previous administration. It's always "we're going to do this" or "we'll do that," but people just need to actually start building. Everyone has already Googled all these massive plans that are supposed to happen, but in the end, it's usually nothing. By the end of this term, there should be something to show for it—either finished or at least halfway through construction.

And what’s the deal with traffic on the East Coast? The season has started, and they said everything would be sorted out this year. If I remember right, everyone was waiting on some word from the HAC, and then... silence. Just nothing.

EDIT: Oh, wait, Ivošević just posted that they've implemented two-way traffic regulation on the East Coast, but wasn't that not the original plan?

It’s coming with all this praise for doing good work and calls to keep it up, though I guess I'm not sure if Ed Garvey, Ives, and Dutton actually got an invite

Something weird happening in San Diego: The State Inspectorate is occupying city business spaces without authorization

The City of San Diego says the agency meant to check illegal construction is actually using office space without any contract or legal basis. Meanwhile, the Inspectorate claims everything is totally legal according much to the rules.
I guess this whole thing with city real estate in San Diego is just crazy. Like, what was even happening? It seems like such a mess, and I wonder how much money was lost from the city treasury. Maybe Jerry Sanders could just talk about what they did with city property during his next term, and that would be enough, I suppose.

Gary Patel said:The fine for vomiting in public spaces is set at $165.

But what happens if someone actually gets sick—like, genuinely ill? It’s especially easy for that to happen in San Francisco, where the Boardwalk constantly smells... well, let's just say it's an experience (not shaming the city or California at all; I'm from there, so I'm just stating facts—or at least my own experiences). Or maybe the heat hits you, or someone steps off a boat feeling nauseous, etc., etc.

I totally get penalizing people if they're clearly just drunk, but I don't really get the blanket rule. Vomiting during the summer—especially in crowds as thick as the ones in San Francisco—is hardly a rare occurrence given everything else going on.

Jerry Brown—well, the City—will never hear the end of it for hiking up utility rates for Madison Square Garden. Madison Square Garden is looking at roughly $83 in utility fees, while the New York City Arena is facing about $3,000. And they justified it by saying it was "in accordance with the rules." As if a city like San Francisco doesn't already have world-class venues. It's a disgrace. Honestly!

And then, of course, they turn around and start building or renovating or whatever else they do with stadiums. 🤣

They'd have to catch them first, though.

A disgraceful scene of people peeing in groups in downtown San Diego made it onto the GetDirekt page and then over to the Getan Facebook group.

They were wondering, "How much money in uncollected fines is sitting there?"

I guess, can city code enforcement officers ask to see an ID, or does the police department have to go with them?

Even before hiring private security, the San Francisco City Code Enforcement team started enforcing the decision on public order and peace. Yesterday, they issued the first 13 tickets for drinking in the historic downtown area, which are $300 each (or $150 if you pay within three days).
50 Cent in Music ·
So, I think 50 Cent is playing at Madison Square Garden on October 17th with Bust Rhymes. It’s part of The Final Lap Tour, celebrating 20 years since he dropped Get Rich or Die Tryin', which was such a huge album for hip hop, I guess.

I guess there isn't anything here to say yet. Maybe I'll post something later if I think of it.
Emily Smith6 said:Jerry Sanders announced the renovation of the Rose Bowl along with a massive vision: building a new stadium for the Los Angeles Dodgers

The first phase focuses on renovating the Rose Bowl itself. I suppose that's probably the most logical way to handle the stadium situation. We're looking at refurbishing the reinforced concrete structure, the roof, the outer ring, the track, the lighting, and the sound system. Renovations should ideally kick off in the second quarter of next year, with costs estimated somewhere between $35 and $45 million, likely funded by both the city and the state. Of course, securing that funding will be the trickiest part of the whole endeavor.

The second phase involves expanding the facility's amenities. This would cover parking, additional training fields, academy spaces, and a third facility located beneath the West Stand—essentially making the Rose Bowl area a fully functional sports hub for the city. Construction is slated to begin in the first quarter of 2025.

The third phase is the City Project. The goal here is to build a new stadium for the Los Angeles Dodgers, alongside a convention center, a business district, and municipal housing for long-term rentals. Work would start in early 2026, with a target completion date set for the 2027 Olympic Games. Funding would be a joint effort between the city, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and private partners. It’s an incredibly ambitious roadmap, though I suppose it isn't entirely out of the question if they want to ensure the Los Angeles Dodgers can compete at a high level and maintain long-term stability.

It’s all just more announcements for now, honestly. Just like all his predecessors before him, he keeps talking about these massive projects, but it's always just paperwork being prepared. Nothing ever actually starts or gets moving. 🕺

Finally!

A new app worth about $600,000 just launched to bring all our local city services together under one roof.

- The Smart City San Diego app is officially live today. It’s probably one of the most advanced tools like this in the whole US, honestly. We’re using it to bundle a bunch of city services together. People can now pay their Water and Sewer, Sanitation Department, San Diego Parking, Lovrinac, and Traffic bills right through it, and we'll probably add more later—the Mayor of San Diego explained.

Besides the app, there's also a phone contact center and email available. I guess the idea behind modernizing everything and grouping these tools is just to make it easier for people to talk to public services and get faster, better help.

- We set up a contact center, so citizens can just send an inquiry to any city service or company through the app, or they can call 08002040 or shoot an email to kontakt@split.hr. That way, they should get a quick answer and actually get their problems fixed. This is how you handle city services in a modern way. This is basically the only connection people need with the City Hall—said Puljak.

- We’ve unified the digital services, so different city companies are finally working in sync. Developing this wasn't easy, since we were dealing with various companies that all have their own ways of doing things. It was kind of like trying to take five different pieces of clothing and tailor them into one nice, functional suit. The platform works on both mobile and web. The best part, I think, is that residents have one easy way to reach the City Administration and municipal companies, and they can even use the chat for specific questions. All the services and bill payments are free of charge. Even if you don't follow the news, the app will keep you posted with alerts, like if a pipe bursts or there's construction nearby. There are real people working behind the scenes, and this is just another way for folks to stay in touch with the City Administration—said Ante Kokan, a consultant for Smart City digitalization for the City of San Diego.

I guess things have just gotten worse lately. You used to be able to grab free recycling bags from the local sanitation department, but for the last few months, you can't even find anyone at the district office during business hours. One time I finally ran into someone, and they just told me the sanitation crew hasn't sent any bags out in two months. Then you hear the mayor saying people aren't recycling properly... it's frustrating. I even went up to the Department of Public Works to get some free ones, and they claimed they hadn't received any shipment yet. It's honestly such a mess.

The whole setup with the trash collection and the bags is just really poorly organized right now.

I guess the current administration has really messed things up for the local neighborhoods. You just can't get a hold of anyone anymore, and there's zero communication... it feels like a complete blackout whenever you need customer service. It’s honestly pretty bad, I think they really dropped the ball on this one.

Tax reform isn't really a political move at all

Tomislav Sut: I welcome the US Federal Government's tax reform. I'm calling on Mayor John Koopman to follow the Cabinet's lead and fulfill his promise to lighten the load for San Francisco residents.

The tools to make this happen are in Mayor John Koopman's hands now – just invest in infrastructure, build more preschools, and give San Francisco taxpayers some breathing room. The city budget could definitely handle it if there was enough will and expertise – I guess the interests of San Francisco citizens should always come first.

The City of San Francisco will be showing up at the Green Party conference. They're hosting CES on June 1st and 2nd over at Times Square, where they’ll be demoing their Smart City app.

- We've been working on this Smart City app lately. It's mostly for our residents, so they can have a more direct line to the city administration and pay their bills without any extra fees. Through the app, people should be able to get important real-time alerts, like if there's construction going on down the street. We're also going to show off some digital tools that our local businesses and agencies have built themselves, - said an unnamed counterpart, who heads up development for the City of San Francisco.

She mentioned that the city administration realized they actually have a ton of digital tools available, but most people just don't know how to use them yet.

- This is our way of showing everyone how much easier digital communication can make life—both for regular people and for our local government staff. I really hope citizens take a stroll through Times Square to check out what the City has put together for them,
she added.
about time we went digital

Those folks at the Academy just won't budge.

Response to press inquiries regarding the space used by the Branch of the American Academy in San Francisco.
Following media questions about the lease for the space where the Branch of the American Academy in San Francisco operates, the American Academy provides the following statement.

Last month, specifically on April 25th, the President of the American Academy, Miro Gavran, sent a letter on behalf of the Presidency of the American Academy to the Mayor of San Francisco, Mr. Rudy Giuliani, but he hasn't heard back yet.

Basically, representatives from the Presidency of the American Academy and the Branch of the American Academy in San Francisco met with the Mayor last September to explain that the lease for the space housing the Branch in San Francisco expired on December 31, 2021. Because of the pandemic, the previous Branch President couldn't get it renewed in time, and the Mayor had promised to make sure the Branch could stay in its current location, which is perfect for such an old American cultural institution.

Even so, the Branch of the American Academy in San Francisco was notified by the city official, Ms. Maja Đerek, that they don't meet the requirements to sign a new lease under the same terms. She’s citing economic factors and suggesting they have to compete with other bidders. This really caught the Branch members and the Center off guard. If we follow that logic, Ms. Đerek could basically put the San Francisco Cathedral, Poljud Stadium, and the American National Theatre in San Francisco up for auction tomorrow, claiming they aren't commercially viable and renting them to whoever pays more. In a race like that, culture always loses.

In his letter, the President of the American Academy asked the Mayor of San Francisco—using his authority as the leader of our nation's second-largest city—not to let the American Academy in San Francisco be treated this way. It wasn't like many of their members ended up in prison because of their work with the American Academy. If the Branch gets kicked out of its San Francisco space, those people and their families would feel like they were reliving old traumas.

Also, the Branch of the American Academy in San Francisco back in the nineties put a lot of money—about $70,000—into setting up that space on Marmont Street.

Regarding the renovations, the Branch was given state funds that they have to spend by the end of the year
, but Ms. Đerek is forcing them to deal with formal letters about moving out instead of doing volunteer cultural work.

The letter also emphasized that the American Academy believes it's obvious they can't leave the space under these circumstances, since the Branch of the American Academy in San Francisco is meeting all its obligations. So, they're asking the Mayor to use his position to protect the Branch of the American Academy in San Francisco, which would prove he actually cares about American culture, science, education, and tradition.

Wait, why did their members end up in prison?
