what kind of evening is that... it's a bit 😁

Arthur Doyle70 said:God forbid I actually attempt to discredit the caliber of Fernando Alonso and Renault 🤣🤣—I was merely offering my own modest perspective

That "bold" claim 🤷 wtf... obviously the chief engineer is going to point out technical flaws; what on earth did you expect, some glowing praise for Heikki's driving skills?

And as for anticipating an error, Massa is practically a master at that specific skill 😂😂😂

Give me a break... Heikki was glued to Alonso's bumper for nine laps before the end, and then he
overtook him in the penultimate lap, so that theory of yours holds plenty of water...

But honestly, I just rewatched that overtake... and I have to say, Alonso went
wide—wider than Heikki did 😂

But seriously...

You can go ahead and criticize Renault all you want because they absolutely earned it...

You could even take a swing at Alonso himself... who's going to stop you?

We're in cyberspace, after all, where absolute freedom is the rule of the land 😁

An overtake is essentially just capitalizing on someone else's mistake...
unless you're significantly faster...

Though, admittedly, one can certainly goad someone into making such a mistake...

Arthur Doyle70 said:Heikki Kovalainen went a bit too wide, but Fernando Alonso seized the opportunity and there he is, right in front; honestly, I feel better about Heikki overtaking Alonso, (if he hadn't engaged the limiter 😢 )

Heikki Kovalainen went a bit too wide...

I could have just as easily said Alonso went too wide when Heikki overtook him...
and frankly, he went even wider

but listen to this

Pat Symonds, Chief Technology Officer: "I think that Fernando's performance today was just wonderful. He used everything that we gave him and more. We were rather unlucky with the safety cars and debated whether to switch strategies under the safety car, but our tyre wear would not allow us to change on to the soft tyre and reach the end of the race with just one stop. As it was Fernando got severe graining on the soft tyres in his final stint, which gave him a lot of understeer. Nico Rosberg's difficult weekend continued as he got hit on the start line which caused considerable damage to the rear of the car. He found it very difficult to drive, which explains his slow lap times and maybe even his retirement as we are still investigating what happened."

The bolded part explains why Heikki passed Alonso...

because he had been glued to his gearbox for eight or nine laps, and then he finally pulled it off on the very last lap...

Renault overtaking both McLaren and Ferrari in a single move
can't be any worse than McLaren overtaking Renault...

you rarely see that first one happen...I actually thought Heikki and Kimi Räikkönen had briefly gone off track...but then, boom...

credit where it's due..he was right on their bumper and caught them while they were braking

generally speaking, you need to capitalize on the mistake of the driver ahead just to overtake a single car...

and when you're dealing with two at once 🙏

🙏

I was actually sitting here wondering how he even pulled that off, especially considering how Kov and Kimi
just flew right off the track, allowing Fonzi to cruise through completely undisturbed...

And as for Kimi...

it looks like that questionable overtake he pulled on Kovalainen
actually happened a full lap before he ever made his move into the pits...

Just a bit idiotic, really.

Everything about this is absolute garbage, except maybe taking a leak...
though even that becomes a total disaster if you're trying to pee against the wind.

And frankly, there's something even more pathetic than that last bit...

which is when Jason Campbell70 starts quoting people in his posts.😁

Let's not get sidetracked here... neither he nor I really matter in the grand scheme of things...

The only one who matters is Fernando!!!!!!
It’s honestly fascinating to watch how masterfully he handles the car, especially now that they're dealing with the lack of traction control.🙏

I won't, I simply won't...

Renault will make their comeback....

After all, they've had the hardest time adjusting to the Bridgestone tires, and then there's all this electronic stuff... it seems McLaren has a slight edge when it comes to low RPMs...
And in Formula 1, even a tiny advantage is a massive advantage...

We're lucky enough to have Fernando, who actually knows how to pilot a car without TC for an entire race
and that's while pushing it right to the absolute limit.

I’ve been catching up on the latest back-and-forth between Jason Campbell70 and Alex Ferguson...

essentially

Roger Williams3 said:I honestly think their main struggle is just maintaining traction through the entire turn😁

Did you catch those apex speed comparisons for those two corners? Fernando Alonso was lagging behind Hamilton by more than 10km/h.

I’ve already made that point once... and frankly, this whole result is just subpar on every conceivable level...

But look, since Fernando Alonso went on record saying he believes they can actually compete on the real tracks
I’m inclined to take his word for it, because everything he’s put out there during testing and these opening practice sessions has been spot on...

jadewolf56 said:for Heidfeld, Rosberg, and Alonso, obviously👍

what kind of disaster was he with that "super perfect" Ferrari?
i see they're doing just fine now🤣

and what about Kimi Räikkönen?
I guess they didn't give him enough fuel or something because the guy clearly doesn't know how to drive🤣

Alonso was actually great considering how many terrible qualifying sessions he had
why didn't they show Ron when Alonso moved back ahead of Heikki Kovalainen?
I would have loved to see that; I'm curious where he would have ended up since there's hardly any room left😁

this little Nelson kid is a complete catastrophe, honestly, he can't even finish a race, and before the season even kicked off he was talking trash about how he was already better than Alonso, come on kid, please, just eat your own words now.👎

well, Kimi Räikkönen just hid a flask in his racing suit and braked late
when he overtook Heikki Kovalainen... 😂

if Piquet doesn't shape up... General Motors really needs to pick up Romain Grosjean...
or maybe Sebastian Vettel... though I wasn't thinking of Fendt🙂

Nicole Reyes97 said:I know exactly what you're thinking, even if you won't say it out loud... and honestly, all I was trying to express is that I am going to be a fan of his forever, and absolutely no one else.😁😉

I’m signing on to this... I'm fully on board.

And then there’s the whole situation regarding Renault... honestly, it’s enough to make anyone lose their patience if they have even a modicum of understanding for how this sport functions. You look at the trajectory they've taken, and it feels less like a calculated strategy and more like a series of unfortunate events being treated as intentional decisions, which is frankly insulting to those of us who actually follow the technical developments. It’s one thing to struggle with power delivery or aero efficiency, but it’s quite another to watch a manufacturer stumble through the same fundamental errors season after season while pretending everything is perfectly under control. I find myself sitting here, staring at the telemetry, wondering if anyone in that garage actually possesses the foresight required to bridge the gap to the frontrunners, because right now, it looks like they're just spinning their wheels in the sand.
They were far too late in securing Alonso, so now they're just wandering aimlessly through a sea of half-baked solutions and desperate guesswork.

I truly find myself hoping they stumble upon a viable solution before it's too late, because at this stage, anything less than a definitive fix feels like a complete waste of everyone's time.

The race pace is looking decent enough, I suppose, though if you ask me, a little more raw speed wouldn't exactly hurt at this stage.

But let’s be honest, the absolute biggest headache here is the traction issues when they're trying to power out of the corners...

stormyviper11 said:Well, yeah, that’s exactly what I said, or at least what I was getting ready to say, because if Heikki had been running with the same fuel load during practice and if Kubica hadn't botched that one move, Hamilton would have been starting from third, and then we'd all be sitting here wondering how that would have played out. But honestly, given the mess of circumstances they were dealing with, I can't find anything to complain about; the kid drove his heart out, perfectly clean, no complaints whatsoever. 🙂
As for whether Heikki could actually pull off something that dominant, I suppose we'll just have to wait and see during one of the upcoming races when he finally gets a real shot at it or when they actually give him the chance.

there are going to be much more interesting races ahead...

they're really going to have to let Heikki off the leash a bit

things will eventually fall into place for Ferrari...
they certainly aren't lacking in raw speed

the biggest shame is that we didn't get to see Dennis's face when Alonso snatched that position back 😂

Bradley Nelson2 said:Throughout the entire last season, those BMW strategists absolutely botched everything they touched regarding Kubica, constantly throwing him right into the thick of the traffic when he didn't need to be there, and frankly, this current strategy looks like an unmitigated disaster because, as we've seen repeatedly, Heidfeld somehow ends up benefiting from these chaotic calls while Kubica is clearly the faster driver.

The German is still holding the edge over the Pole in that BMW, I suppose.👎

Though, honestly, it feels more like a recovery process.

It would honestly be a comedy of errors if they actually started hunting down Lewis Hamilton only for Jean Todt to realize he has absolutely no one left to hire as a driver—and no, I am certainly not talking about Kimi🤣.

And where are all those armchair experts who were so incredibly certain that Massa was going to be an absolute superstar during the race??😂😂

If Lewis Hamilton actually had a car that wasn't a total disaster, he’d be performing literal miracles on the track; instead, he's stuck dragging this sluggish Ford through the field and still giving it everything he's got... that crafty move to get past Kimi and Heikki deserves a trophy in its own right.🙏🙏👍

I can only hope that the folks over at Ford finally figure out what's going on with these tires and decide to
actually give him some decent horsepower....

I'm convinced they eventually will, though God knows when that might actually happen.
Australian Grand Prix - March 16, 2008 in Formula 1 ·
Raymond Palmer8 said:I wouldn't exactly give that my full endorsement.
The only way that logic holds water is if they could actually carry over everything useful from the old car onto the new chassis, but that's just not how things work here.

Do you remember back when Lewis Hamilton hopped into that Red Bull RB9, even though it was running all that new electronics...

The real issue is that most teams are still dealing with massive teething problems on their new cars, especially those outfits that haven't had nearly enough testing time under their belts.

stormyviper11 said:I’m assuming the tank was completely bone-dry and he just had to pull in, because I highly doubt they would have called him in otherwise. Though then again, after that lazy idiot with the lollipop stick messed up, they told him he still had plenty of fuel left... so maybe they topped him off with just enough to scrape by.

It was an interesting watch, even if it wasn't exactly thrilling, aside from the moment Alonso managed to overtake two cars at once and Kim's aggressive move right at the start.

I was honestly appalled by how much Glock's car fell apart after bouncing all over those grass patches. 😲

we really need to take a deeper look at the race data...

but Novak insisted that Alonso clocked the fastest lap right at the very end of the race...

fine... sure, less fuel... but you also have to account for the fact that those tires were absolutely shredded.

stormyviper11 said:I honestly don't know how much more we can debate whether Hamilton got lucky, considering one Safety Car basically handed him a lifeline while another one stripped away his lead. It’s just fundamentally easier to make the right tactical calls when you aren't constantly relying on the chaos of external factors to bail you out. He had luck on his side, sure, and he clearly enjoys the internal hierarchy and the edge he gets in qualifying, because if Kubica and Kovalainen hadn't been lagging behind him, there's no way he would have escaped with that result. That said, looking strictly at his performance during the race itself, I don't have any complaints.

Prika was right about him getting lucky with the tire strategy...

I went into this thinking we were looking at maybe a single lap gap...

but instead, it was four... and a massive gap at that, over a minute and twenty-seven seconds...

and remember, Heikki was right there, only three tenths off in Q3...

It is an absolute certainty that he would have been faster if he’d been running with the same fuel load...

and if you want proof of what the pace actually looked like, just look at Heikki's times when
he fell back... and even when he was just stuck in that mid-field train...

Bradley Nelson2 said:Renault isn't even putting up a fight out there; Piquet is just dragging himself along like he's hauling a heavy-duty semi-truck through traffic.

Their cornering speeds are absolutely pathetic...

They seriously need to get their act together...

On another note... overtaking is still an absolute nightmare...

But I suppose that’s just what we expect from racing in Australia... honestly, unless they slash the downforce or decide to switch over to slicks next season, we aren't going to see any real action where
overtaking becomes unpredictable...
