Time is flying by way too fast in Psychology ·
It’s just like analogwalker8 says—it’s all about perception. Seriously, try waking up at 6:00 AM, grab a coffee, sit by the window, and just... don't do anything. Just stare outside. I did this once last summer when I was staying near Seattle, and man, by the time noon rolls around, it feels like six years have passed instead of just a few hours. 🙂

Wait, was it actually necessary to quote my own post when nobody even replied in the meantime?

If someone actually caught a warning because of this, let me know and I'll clear it right up. Seriously though, can the mods please stop overmoderating everything? Just leave people's quotes alone unless they're turning into massive, useless walls of text.

So, basically, the admin team doesn't see any issue at all with what I just did by replying to this post? Interesting...

Fine then, why don't you guys just turn on auto-quote (which has been an option in vBulletin since version 2.5, I'm not even kidding) and let's just have a total quotefest so everyone can be super happy and satisfied. 🤷

How many times has someone actually hit on someone else here?

What do you mean "long post"? Look, this whole thing basically kicked off because of what Brandon Lopez6 wrote:
Elizabeth Davis said:If they're seriously getting this worked up about quoting people, they might as well just put it in the official rules. I mean, imagine someone comes in, reads the rules perfectly, quotes the person right above them, and still risks getting banned. 🤣

driftingfox33, my logic is totally sound, and hey, I know how to use the quote function too, so don't even worry about it, girl.

Edit:
I can't stop thinking about this... So, driftingfox33, are you seriously telling me you'd rather try to be faster than everyone else by using the quote tool on something like "What's 2+2?"—just so nobody beats you to the punch—instead of just hitting "Quick reply"? Seriously, grab a stopwatch and let us know how that works out for you! 🤣

Preach!

loneraven25 said:I mean, if someone would just explain why we even need all this quoting,
we could have a real debate among the MIT moderators about whether this whole thing makes sense. 🤷

Honestly, this sounds more like a psychology question at this point, lol 😁
One big reason I’ve been posting way less on MIT is because of that constant escalation—everyone quoting everyone else in every single post. It’s exhausting. And I really don't want to be the guy hitting the block button on people who haven't even made twenty posts yet... what a joke.

True that, haha.
And hey, check out this thing I stumbled upon
It’s pretty much the same vibe, and man, it is just incredibly annoying. You should definitely take a look at post #4 too—do me a favor and drop that link into this thread 😁

That’s actually a killer question, and hopefully, we’ll get some real answers soon 🙂

I mean, I’m pretty sure you can go into the vBulletin settings and just toggle certain features off for specific user groups, right? Like, it might be worth just blocking anyone with fewer than 10 posts from using the quote function by default... though, yeah, okay, I guess there might be those rare times when someone actually *needs* to quote something for a legit reason, but still...

But seriously, there’s this massive, screen-width chunk where it says Quick Reply that’s like, twenty times wider than the actual quote button 🤷
. It makes zero sense. Like, how is it easier to just hit quote than to actually use some common sense and realize the Quick Reply box is—get this—for a *quick reply*?

Elizabeth Davis said:and you'd probably get wiped or banned for that 😬.

Here’s an exception though (quoting part of the post), which is fine. Why would I get banned or anything? I haven't run into that issue because I’m not out here editing someone else's post just to change the whole point (like if I took what you wrote and turned it into "and you'd get banned for that"), I'm just trimming things down to make it readable.

Edit: Also, your location has always been absolutely wild to me 😁

Is it actually that hard to just go back and do some editing on your own post to add stuff like how I quoted you? Plus, that little icon next to the "says" part takes you straight to the original post anyway.
I mean, sure, someone might jump in, but what if they don't? It’s not really a solid argument 😛

Okay, I read the edit, but honestly? I highly doubt any of these people have ever even stepped foot on a legit forum before. It’s like they don't even grasp the basic unwritten rules of online etiquette. Like, one of the big ones is just not quoting someone directly above you if you aren't actually adding anything meaningful to their point. You know, instead of just repeating them? You don't need an IQ of 150 to realize that makes zero sense if you're actually following logic. Just imagine if we tried to talk like this in person...

You: Hey Alex Barnes93, what's up?
Me: Brandon Lopez6 says: "Hey Alex Barnes93, what's up?"; Nothing much, Brandon, just venting because I'm quoting you.
You: Alex Barnes93 says: "Nothing much, Brandon, just venting because I'm quoting you."; Yeah, that's weird.
Me: Brandon Lopez6 says: "Yeah, that's weird."; Totally.

I mean, dafuq? 😁

Edit: And now look at this... since I'm already bringing up how annoying people are... what kind of person aims for the Quote button, carefully positions their cursor in the text box, and then starts typing manually instead of just hitting Quick Reply to get it done in two seconds?

Seriously, why on earth would you quote someone who’s sitting right above you? Like, what am I actually gaining by dragging an entire massive post into my reply? Enlighten me, please, because I honestly can't wrap my head around the logic of hitting that quote button when things are set up like this. 🤷
It’s just way faster to use Quick Reply, plus the whole thread stays way cleaner and much easier to follow if people want to quote stuff later.

The only time it makes sense is if there’s some massive flame war going on and you gotta quote them just so they can't go back and sneakily change their post after the fact.

It’s honestly such a massive L when someone quotes a giant wall of text right above them, only to hit back with like, five measly words. It’s just... why?
Seriously, I’ve seen this happen thousands of times—literally—across basically every single sub-forum on here:
Sure, you could just hit reply, but nooo, people would rather smash that quote button and turn every thread with more than two posts into an absolute eyesore.

And don't even get me started on the pure insanity of someone starting a whole new thread, having the next guy quote their entire life story, then some third person comes along and quotes *that* mess... it just goes on and on forever.

If you don't get why this is totally unhinged, you might actually need to go back to basics because you clearly missed the entire foundation of American internet culture.

Windows 10 or Windows 8.1 for a new build? in Software ·
23 hours?! Man, either you were using some ancient, super slow USB stick or you went with the Gutmann method for the format. Honestly, just one pass is plenty and way faster. Blancco is definitely slower than dd or DBAN, and even if it was the slowest option, a 1-pass zero fill on a 320 GB 5400 rpm hard drive on a quad-core laptop should take maybe 5 hours at most.
Look, if you just need to wipe Windows, there’s no point in formatting the whole entire hard drive unnecessarily. Just focus on those first 10-11 GB where the Windows 10 GB files live, format that part, and you can pretty much call it a day. It shouldn't take more than 15-20 minutes tops.

Go ahead and throw Windows 7 on there first. Get everything dialed in—drivers, all that good stuff—then run a defrag. Once you've defragged, boot up into Redo backup and snap an image of the system so you don't have to deal with a full reinstall later.
Give it a week-2 test run. Once you see how the machine behaves and you're feeling happy with it, go ahead and do a low-level format, install Windows 8.1, grab your drivers again, la la la, defrag it, and make another image with Redo Backup. Use that for a week-2 test too, then once you're satisfied, that's your permanent image. If you ever decide you want to jump back to Windows 7, just do a low-level format, pull up your image via Redo Backup, and boom—in a few minutes you've got your perfectly tuned system back exactly how you left it, drivers and all.

Oh man, just wiping the C drive? Heh... if you want to go full scorched earth, go with a low-level format so absolutely nothing survives. You could grab the free version of Active KillDisk—it just overwrites everything with zeros, which is honestly plenty for what we're doing here—or just fire up DBAN. Honestly, even just booting into a live session from some Linux distro would let you scrub the whole thing clean. There's zero chance anything stays behind once you're done.

Honestly, you’re gonna get hit with an equal amount of solid arguments and pure trash-talking on both sides. Just grab one, test it out, take some notes (like if something starts acting funky), and then decide for yourself.
I’m sticking with Windows 10 because, let's be real, 4chan's take on 8/8.1 just isn't my vibe.

Go with the Cooler Master Hyper 212 (preferably the EVO version). In my experience, it stays pretty quiet while still being super efficient at keeping things cool.

Reddit: "But 8/8.1 is faster than light!"—yeah, I know, that's usually the go-to argument in these debates.
What does the monitor size even have to do with anything? MPlayer just pulls the native screenshot. Like, if you're watching an FHD video on some tiny 1-inch screen that's basically 6x2 pixels, it’s still gonna grab that FHD shot. Pretty sure VLC plays by the same rules too.
