PC Build Ideas & Recommendations in Desktops ·
I guess component prices aren't dropping fast enough right now that it might actually make more sense to just drop the cash on a high-end build and call it a day for the next three years.
Turbo works on a totally different level, it’s got nothing to do with video memory.
Compatible RAM modules? in Hardware ·
You just have to watch out for the color matching. You could try resetting your BIOS settings, but I doubt that’ll actually do anything. It’s probably just that your RAM sticks aren't playing nice together, which isn't super common, but I guess it happens sometimes.

Maybe just sell the SanDisk or try trading them for something else.

Honestly, any card below this one is just throwing money down the drain, so you might as well aim for this. And seriously, make sure you grab the GDDR5 version, even if it has less VRAM.

How old is your power supply? Because your next upgrade might actually need to be a new PSU.
I was actually telling a buddy yesterday that now might be a pretty decent time to pick up a new PC

It’s all scaled together, I guess. As you bump up the FBI, the memory goes up too, so you’ll have to dial in the voltage yourself (plus everything else, since you pretty much have to run everything on manual). To get a better handle on how this works, you might want to check out this guide:

Switching to that processor would actually be a step backward. I mean, sure, it hits 3GHz, but it’s based on an old architecture that just sucks and runs insanely hot.

If you had a decent 775 motherboard, you could maybe mess around with a quad core or at least an E8400, but with what you've got, the only move is jumping to an e6*** series, which isn't much of an upgrade anyway.

Basically: just be glad the thing still works and don't touch anything while it's running. You should probably just start saving up for a new PC. 😁

Who, what, where? Where are you planning to shop, and what's the actual goal here—assuming the GPU mention means gaming?
Zachary Barrett4 said:I don't know, I'm surrounded by people using Intel who swear by them, though I don't really see much difference myself, maybe they just run a bit cooler 🤷

That's probably because when people buy Intel, they think they’ve achieved something huge, so they can't stop talking about it. 😁

For home users, Intel and AMD are pretty much on level ground. You aren't going to notice a massive gap between an Intel Core i5-4590 and an AMD FX-8350—you really won't.

I guess the i5 has a slightly lower TDP, so it stays a bit cooler, whereas the AMD FX-8350 pulls more power and runs hotter. On the flip side, you can undervolt the AMD FX-8350 to keep temps down, or even overclock it, which you can't really do with a standard i5.
I guess you might as well grab an AMD FX since you've already got such a solid motherboard. Just skip the AMD FX-8350 because it's probably not worth the cash; maybe look into the AMD FX-8300 instead. Throw a decent cooler on there if you don't have one yet and you should be good to go.
Used PC builds: What are they worth? in Desktops ·
It’s still a beast, honestly. I’d probably go the same route: overclock it, grab a new GPU, and toss in an SSD. A Seagate power supply? You probably meant Seasonic, right?

I ran into the same thing with that Motherboard, but I didn't really bother digging into it since it was actually working 😬 You probably need to check the manual to be sure. I think ASRock has a dehumidify feature that does something similar.

So, what kind of build are we talking about here? I think I saw that on a few motherboards before, but I never really gave it much thought, I guess.

That would probably do the job, but I guess there are better options out there than that TT model. If you were shopping, which store would you even hit up?

You could probably just toss the power supply in the trash and pray it didn't take anything else down with it
Honestly, if they don't drop those prices soon, I might just drive down there and pick it up myself rather than dealing with the headache of waiting on a webshop delivery 😁

AC 230V 4A 50Hz doesn't really tell us much, I guess. We probably need the actual brand and model number from the power supply label

It used to struggle to boot up on the first try -> maybe a faulty PSU or some blown capacitors. What kind of build are we talking about here, and which power supply are you using?
I probably should've just looked away; now I can't stop thinking about it.😁

Anthony Hayes82 said:I'm probably just gonna use the SSD to keep Windows isolated from my other data. My original thought was to just grab a cheap 120GB HDD, but I figured why not, if it gives me even a tiny bit faster boot times and better responsiveness. I'll move Program Files and User folders over to the HDD and just symlink them so Windows does less heavy lifting, plus keep the page file and temp files on the HDD too...

I guess that doesn't make much sense. Sure, putting Downloads / Pictures / Documents on an HDD is fine, but you should definitely leave your desktop and Program Files on the SSD. There's really no point in trying to save space when you already have the drive; it's not like it's going to die in two days. Just leave your daily apps, temp files, and the paging file on the SSD and enjoy the speed.
