Decided to cast my vote during this quick listening session

The Stone Roses—heard of them before, but first time actually listening, and man, they clicked instantly. Love them.

Kammerflimmer Kollektief... okay, the track Hausen is killer. Giving them my vote. The rest is just cool vibes.

Amadou & Mariam—decided to cause a little controversy here and vote for them.🙂 Haven't touched this album in years, but I dusted it off last weekend to refresh my memory.🙏

David Bowie—yeah, Young Americans and Fama are absolute top-tier. Also checked out Win and it’s pretty solid.

Albums that didn't get my vote

Mistifs—voice is way too high for me. Sounds like if The Smiths decided to play punk.

Psihomodo—looks like a famous album with a few hits, but not for me.

Tool—I’m just not really a metal guy (even if this sounds like something I could actually vibe to). But hey, this is a speed-run listen, so there's not much else to say.

Harley Poe—it just hit me: this is basically like some punk version of a weird carnival act. A bit cabaret for my taste, but honestly, better than I expected.

Brian Eno—it's cool, but I can't vote for everyone.😁 Not bad, definitely not total garbage.😁

His Name Is Alive—is this shoegaze? Personally, the production felt a little too "out there" for me. Cornfield sounds good, though.

Amadou & Mariam, Dimanche à Bamako (2004)

Amadou & Mariam are this blind couple from Mali. They’re pretty huge names over in the African music scene. World music. Honestly, such a massive, messy category. It’s basically everything that isn't playing on Top 40 radio in middle America. Some people love it, some people find it pretentious, but I think it's where the real soul lives. If you aren't digging outside your own backyard, you're missing out. Period. Get this—Manu Chao is going to produce the Album. Seriously.

I picked up this album in person back when I was hanging out in New York City. Honestly, it feels way more like a summer record than what we're dealing with right now, but it actually hits pretty hard on those cold days too.
M'Bifé by Mariam Doumbia and Manu Chao—hits at 2:11.
M'Bifé Balafon by Manu Chao—just under two minutes of pure vibes."
Coulibaly (Amadou Bagayoko) — 3:18
Réalité (Bagayoko) — 3:32
Senegal Fast Food (Bagayoko, Chao, Doumbia) — 4:19
Artistiy (Doumbia) — 3:11
"La Fête au Village" (Bagayoko) — 4:11
"Camions Sauvages" by Bagayoko, Chao, and Doumbia hits at the 4:08 mark.
"Beaux Dimanches" by Bagayoko—runs at 3:31.
La Paix by Bagayoko — 4:19
Djanff (Bagayoko, Chao, Doumbia) — 4:13
Taxi Bamako by Chao—3:44.
Politic Amagni (Bagayoko, Chao, Ousmane Cissé, Tiemoko Traoré) — 4:56
"Gnidjougouy" (Doumbia) — 3:45
M'Bifé Blues (Chao, Doumbia) — 5:21

Note Check this Wikipedia link—it actually shows the real album cover! Some random guy uploaded the full album to YouTube, but he totally botched the track order. So, I just had to go in and add the songs one by one myself!

Enjoy yourselves! 🙂

I noticed even the albums that don't score the highest still get their own threads.

Can anyone just start a topic for their own "album of the week" suggestion, or does an album actually have to meet certain criteria before it can be put in a new thread? I'm a little lost here. Thanks for the help 🙂

@Lisa Davis46/">@@Lisa Davis46 You totally forgot to mention just how much you hated that album I recommended.😬 Seriously, just listen to two minutes of it and you'll get the whole vibe. 😬

Quick thoughts after a speed-run listen

Peter Hamil-Over The opening track gives off major gothic rock vibes, but the rest of the stuff really reminds me of Nick Cave. He actually managed to grab my attention, even if everything isn't quite perfect. Still, a solid quick listen.

Morphine-Good Those trumpets are absolutely delicious. It’s a shame this isn't an instrumental album (or at least feels that way during a quick spin); the vocals and melody just get in the way.

Brian Eno-Another day on earth
Weird that this isn't on Spotify. Had to hunt it down on YouTube. Just a quick skim through what I could hear. Nah, it's not really hitting the mark for me.

Valentino Bošković - Velika prasak This caught me off guard. I totally thought I was in for a jazz album—something like that late American jazz legend who played the vibraphone or sax or whatever. 🤔 The lyrics are pretty incomprehensible at first. Gave it a shot, though.
Prince-Dirty Mind The second track is cool, but it didn't really pack a punch during a fast listen. Maybe because his style is so unmistakable that there aren't many surprises left.

Rei Harakami-Colors of The dark Hmm, maybe a little too obscure for my taste?

Corrosion of Conformity - Blind Sounds like Metallica playing hard rock.
Dali`s Car - The Waking hour Interesting, but the vocals stumble a bit. It narrowly missed the cut for me. 😬
Julia Holter - have you in my Wilderness
Glad someone mentioned her. I was literally just thinking about this singer but couldn't pull her name from my brain. I checked out her last album, Aviary, which was intriguing but pretty hard to wrap your head around. But man, as soon as that first track on this album started, it was love at first sight. Maybe I skipped to the second track or something, I don't know, but that was it. Best thing I've heard in a quick listen. 😍

I gotta post this late at night because my mornings are slammed with stuff I actually have to do.

So, here's my pick for this round: The Shaggs-Philosophy of The World (1969)

Some of you might already know the deal with this one. 🙂 Whether I actually dig it or if it’s any good is a whole other conversation entirely.
The album is weird, totally off the wall, and honestly, I'm just curious—kind of like watching a science experiment—to see how it lands in the voting.

So the suggestions start rolling in at midnight on Thursday, and then voting wraps up by Friday at midnight—basically the start of Saturday. Got it. I was totally out of the loop on that one. ☕

Jason Mendoza said:Orders from the dead

Check this out. It’s about that massive fire in Smyrna started by the Turks where a ton of Greek women were assaulted. That mix of Greek and English is killer—she really added that perfect little touch to the whole thing. Definitely a top-tier track, even if it is absolutely haunting.

It’s one of those cases where you can actually learn some history through music that maybe got skipped over in school.

p.s. I'll post more tomorrow morning; I'm way too wiped out right now to be coherent.

I jumped in at the 9:27 mark (not sure if there was some big climax 😁). It started sounding a bit like ritualistic Satanism, so I had to bail. The whole vibe felt like some kind of fever dream theater.

Is this her strongest stuff? (No need to send me a link 😁). This was unsettling but actually listenable. Unlike Lingua Ignota, which is just straight-up crossing every boundary imaginable.

Hold up, I totally missed my chance to vote 😲 🙏

Jason Mendoza said:She’s an incredible musician, honestly. Super emotional stuff, and her songs are top-tier. If she were just a little younger, she’d basically be my entire personality and aesthetic😁

That’s a woman right there. 😲

I haven't heard it yet, but it totally reminds me of that Lingue Ignoti album, *Caligula*. I listened for maybe ten minutes before I had to bail just to save my sanity😲 (Plus, she’s got this masculine vibe going on, even though you can tell from her interviews she's definitely a woman)

Mark Cruz15 said:Satan is just a cheap knockoff of Allen’s GG. Seriously, give them a shot. If you can actually stomach their stuff, you'll eat Satan for breakfast.

Haven't seen it. Did a quick Google search though. Turns out his actual name is Jesus Christ—pretty sure that was just what his parents went with. 😲

I’m digging Myrkur 👍

That Crippled Black stuff? Totally fascinating. Super artsy. Honestly, the vocals give me major Thom Yorke vibes 😁

Haven't sat down to really dig through a full Kero Kero Bonito album yet—just skipped around a bit. Way too much sugar for my taste. (And look, I’m not out here doing deep academic studies on every record; if I actually sat through everything properly, my take might be different)

Thanks for the Diamand Galas suggestion, but looking at that album title... yeah, no thanks. Not my vibe. 😲

Heading to the polls tomorrow 🎉

So, I fired up a few of these albums just to get a feel for the production. I’m not really judging the songwriting here—I’m just vibing with how the actual sound hits me on the first pass.

Finally worked up the nerve to spin that Satan Panonski record. I lasted about two minutes into the first track before needing a breather. It’s interesting, in a dark, twisted way. Honestly? It sounds like pure madness. 😲

Jonas Hellborg... now that looks like some interesting musicianship.

Mastodon? Yeah, that sound definitely isn't my cup of tea.

Wait, is "The Next" actually just one single song stretched out over an entire hour??

Pharaon seems pretty cool. There's a hint of free jazz influence there, but it doesn't go overboard. (Just a heads-up, I was mostly just listening to the sonic texture of the album myself)

Gonna give the rest of these a listen later on.

Honestly, just hearing that singer's name used to freak me out. Now that I’m actually looking at these track titles? Yeah, no thanks. 😱

I remember asking one of my cousins—he listens to all that punk stuff, or whatever it's called, I don't really follow it—what this Satan guy sounds like or what he even sings about. He just looked at me and said, "Trust me, you're better off not knowing." 😁

I’m not just throwing out albums that I think are flawless; sometimes I suggest stuff because there’s just some other reason behind it.

This time, I'm putting up The Rapture-Echoes (2003).

Revisited this one on Sunday after ages. Look, not every single track is a masterpiece—I could probably nitpick a few flaws if I really wanted to—but it hits exactly what it needs to hit. I was listening to it while chilling out, which is kind of ironic since this isn't exactly meant for sitting still. 😁
I've wanted this one forever; actually had it bought for me back in NYC. When I was 18, I used to dance my head off to this. 🙏 (It definitely messed with my head regarding how I "compose" things, but that's a whole different rabbit hole. 🙂)

Genre: dance-punk, post-punk revival, alternative dance

1.Olio 5:20
2.Heaven 3:47
3.Open Up Your Heart 5:22
4.I Need Your Love 4:39
5.The Coming Of Spring 2:42
6.House Of Jealous Lover 5:04
7.Echoes 3:06
8.Kiling 3:37
9.Sister Savior 3:51
10. Love Is All 4:26
11.Infatuation 5:01

First I’ve ever heard of this Greek group.

I just sat through about 15 minutes of the album. Look, I won't say it's absolute perfection, but man, it sounds world-class. 😲

Thought we were skipping Album of the Week this week, but nope, here we go.

Anyway, I’m calling dibs on next Thursday. 🎉

Look, I haven't actually spun any of these albums yet. I usually stick to the "highbrow" stuff over whatever’s topping the Billboard charts, but I figured I'd throw my vote toward Justin just to humble us all a little bit and kill off this elitist vibe on the forum. 😁 🙏
Album of the week in Music ·
"My" album pulled in three votes.🙏 Honestly, I've only spun it once. Sunday is my go-to day for listening—just kick back, lie down, and let it all sink in.

I’ve already got a new suggestion lined up, but I’m gonna hold off for about two months so I don't seem too eager 🙂 which is a total departure from this current album.
