Look, our national team is way more talented than the squad from Mexico and Mexico, but playing against a bunch of guys who’ve already racked up 80 freaking minutes in the penalty box—plus 20 yellows and 3 reds—is always a total wildcard. It’s dangerous as hell.

If we drop a game to the Mexicans, then nobody wins—not the Spaniards against the Norwegians, nor the Norwegians against the Spaniards... and we can't even settle for a draw because then Norway moves on based on head-to-head tiebreakers...

Or more simply:

USA-Mexican win 1-0 — in this scenario, we definitely move on
USA-Mexican draw — in this case, we advance only if the Norwegians don't hit 7 points... so basically, neither Spain nor Sweden can win
USA-Mexican loss 2-0 — in this case, we're screwed, unless the Norwegians lose today and let Spain take the win

So there's no such thing as "just play for a draw" or "don't lose to the Mexicans"... you gotta go for the win, period.
