Timothy Kim60 said:I’m not even a huge fan of the VRAM on that specific model, but looking at things $567 lately, it’s basically his only viable option and the strongest GPU available. If you checked out those tests for 29 games I linked, the only title where 3GB is actually an issue is Resident Evil 7, but even then, it only drops in a few minor details; the FPS would still jump back up quite high. Hardware Unboxed mentioned they’re going to test exactly how much you need to dial back settings in that specific game—everything else should be fine.

No, no, and no. I didn't say buying a 1060 6GB isn't worth it, mainly because I know the chip is being throttled on the lower memory models. I'm speaking generally here—saying 3GB is "simply too little" is an exaggeration. You can play perfectly fine with 2GB as long as you don't go overboard with stuff like 4K textures or rendering bushes way outside your field of view. If you want everything set to Ultra, sure, even 6GB might feel tight here and there. But 3GB on a card like the 1060 is totally solid; it's nowhere near "simply too little." Like I said, if a game was stuttering on a GTX 970 despite its 3.5 + 0.5 GB setup, you could probably fix it just by dropping textures from Ultra to Very High and calling it a day.

Larry Ortiz5 said:Whatever you do, don't touch a graphics card with only 3GB of VRAM. In today's gaming landscape, that's just way too little.

Man, come on, you're overreacting. An RX 460 with 2GB can run The Witcher on high settings if you aren't being too greedy with the sliders. So why would 3GB be an issue, especially on a much stronger card? Sure, if you're chasing 4K textures, then yeah, even 4GB might feel tight, but for any reasonable gaming setup, 2GB gets the job done... Let alone 3GB on a card like the 1060.

It’s true, the 470 was always the weaker, budget-friendly option. The 570 is much closer to the performance levels of the 1060; they're basically in the same ballpark. Click Plus, it's newer and packs an extra gig of VRAM. It isn't a massive game-changer, but hey, it could definitely help out. So, if it's around $1600ish, the 570 would be a solid pick—I'd honestly lean toward that over the 1060 any day.

That’s too bad. That RX 570 was going for about $500, which would've been an absolute steal. If they don't drop the price to 8, I'll probably just grab the GeForce GTX 1060 3 instead. 🤷

For that kind of money, you really want the RX 570, except it’s sold out everywhere right now. If I were you, I'd just hang tight for a bit—maybe give a couple of online retailers a call to see if they're getting more stock soon. Between those two options, definitely go with the 1060; the 470 is just weaker.
I'm telling you, the RX 570 is the way to go on this budget, so it might be best to just wait a little while.😉

That’s just a useless response 😛 It still doesn't hold a candle to the G4560 on the low end or the Ryzen on the high end. 🎉

Timothy Kim60 said:Obviously go with the new GTX 1050 Ti. You get a full 3-year warranty, it pulls way less power, and let's be real, the R9 380 isn't even stronger than this.

This one is actually the better deal for you.

How is that a better deal, Timothy Kim60? For $13 you're getting 2 extra gigs of VRAM and a Ti instead of a non-Ti.🍿

There isn't much to tweak here—just pull out the old hardware, install the new stuff, and you're ready to game.😁 I'm genuinely curious to see how this performs and just how big the jump in speed actually is.

Yeah, dual channel is a total game changer for an APU. The issue is he’s already running some sticks, but I think they're stuck at 1333 MHz. Should I suggest he runs XMP to hit at least 1600, then just grab another 1600 stick to match?

I haven't even seen the PC yet; I just asked him to send over some CPU-Z screenshots. Given how old this build is, I’m betting he doesn't have any. ☕
Well, whatever. If he actually buys something, we'll plug it in and see what the temps look like. Dealing with builds like this is such a headache.
Plus, he's running an APU with only a single stick of RAM. He's definitely going to need to pick up more.

A buddy of mine is running an old FM2 build—looks like an A4 4020 paired with an MSI A55M-E33 motherboard. He mostly plays League, but he’s hitting some lag spikes and wants an upgrade. I found an A8 6600 k for him, but I'm wondering if it's actually smart to drop a 100W TDP CPU onto such a low-end board? He’s using an MS Platinum v2 400W unit. Honestly, this budget rig wouldn't even be functional without that MS power supply 😬
Thoughts? If we swap the CPU and maybe the PSU, it shouldn't be a massive jump in power draw, right? The power supply should handle the motherboard just fine... though I'm not sure about the heat levels..

It looks like I'll be going with the Smarticev Apacer after all, since the MX300 isn't even available at any Linksov stores anymore. 🤦

crimsonstag84 said:It’s definitely better than Kingston. It’s in the same class as the MX300, which is a bit pricier (and offers more storage), but you can't find the MX300 at Links. You won't have to worry about shipping costs here, and you can even grab it on 9 interest-free monthly installments if that works better for you. 😛

It isn't for me—it's for a friend—but honestly, I don't mind dropping $267 instead of 700 if there's a real difference. I know Samsung is the best buy, but we're talking serious money now $300. Basically, the MX is the middle ground? The MX isn't available in Cleveland, but I can order it from San Diego; waiting a few days isn't a big deal.

Timothy Kim60 said:Yep, there's a difference

Mostly it's meant for OEM machines; I have no idea how it even ended up in retail sales.

Yep, I figured it couldn't be this $33 cheaper without some kind of catch. There absolutely is one.

All in all, the MX seems like the way to go. I think I'll just order it through Links for delivery.

crimsonstag84 is suddenly dropping names like Apacer out of nowhere 😬 Is it actually any good? Does it beat out the MX or a budget Samsung? Or maybe the UV400?
New SSD recommendations? in Desktops ·
Yeah, exactly, but there’s still a lot more to it. 😁 Basically, these are the SSDs they sell to their partners—companies like Dell and Lenovo—who then just slap them straight into their laptops. The other one has a different memory controller and doesn't even use that 3D V-NAND if I remember correctly; this is the Client edition. It's got slower write speeds, too. There's definitely a difference, so there's no way it can be $33 cheaper while being exactly the same 😬
In the end, I'm leaning towards the MX300, that cheaper Samsung, or maybe even the UV400. Anyone else have suggestions? Can someone tell me specifically which of these would be the absolute best? Though, yeah, I know... it's mostly just tiny nuances you wouldn't even notice during everyday use.

analogtiger19 said:Well, it's just marketing... you've got the Client edition and the Enterprise edition...(EVO and PRO)

No, no, no... there's actually more to it. I was googling it earlier, though I didn't quite wrap my head around all of it. This Client edition stuff is usually what gets shipped pre-installed in laptops or via OEM systems. For example, look at the client edition versus the "real" 850 EVO over at Instar. The difference lies in $33, but what else? 🙂
New SSD recommendations? in Desktops ·
Btw, sorry for the double post, but what’s the deal with THIS? Client edition? What does that even mean?
New SSD recommendations? in Desktops ·
Look, I get that the Samsung way is usually the move, but we're working with a tight student budget here. A buddy of mine is picking this up, and he isn't about to drop an extra $25 just because of a brand name if he doesn't have to. That’s why I’m looking at these cheaper options. I know the UV400 is solid, but I totally blanked on the MX300, and honestly, the price point is right where I want it.

Like the title says—I'm looking for the best 240 GB SSD. It needs to be from somewhere like HGSrot, Instar, or Links. I know they aren't exactly the gold standard for shopping, but I need the store to be located in Cleveland. I don't want to deal with paying shipping fees from New York City just to end up spending the same amount anyway.
I spotted a UV400 at HGSpot for $259, maybe that's the one? There's a ton of newer stuff out there now, like Transcend, but I'm not really sure about their quality. Can anyone shed some light on that? So, HGSpot, Instar, and Links are all on the table. Thank you 🙂
