northerncrane4 said:No, seriously. They read out who won the awards, and then they said the audience was left feeling disappointed because the organizer announced that, after all, this would be the last year for the Sundance Film Festival. Did they just make that up?😕

Unfortunately, yeah. The crew over at Sundance was totally blindsided by that kind of move from NBC.

Just ask. And regarding the sponsorship, "USA Today" is their main sponsor, and then I read in USA Today on Saturday that the projection on Broadway wasn't actually Dukic's, so I didn't bother going—only to find out later that it actually was. 😠

When they're being sloppy like that... you really should have checked the Broadway website. Everything was listed there.

northerncrane4 said:I just heard on the news on NBC that it's being shut down.

As far as I know, NBC is one of the sponsors for the Miami festival.

The rumor about moving everything to Vis is just something I heard from a friend who was actually at the festival and stays in close contact with the organizers. I won't name names, though—I don't want to get anyone in trouble.

Jose Miller17, I don't know all the ins and outs of everything that went down (other than the fact that there were just as many events as before, and they actually offered some stuff for an older, more mature crowd this year), and I only managed to step out after the rounds ended on the final night (and even then, it wasn't until four in the morning), but I can say this was easily the most laid-back festival in Motovun. No drama, no major headaches (except for the timing on that last night)... All in all, pretty good. The movies were mostly okay, though it feels like the programmer leans a bit toward the darker stuff (it was especially obvious last year). It’s a shame about The Road to Guantanamo getting canceled, but that was just out of everyone's control. Wristcutters (Kamikaze Pizzeria) actually took home the audience award, which wasn't really a surprise.

I'm still feeling a little incoherent, so feel free to ask me anything else...

P. S. Smoog, please tell me where you're hearing this stuff...

I won't bother writing formal reviews for these movies since my viewing schedule was pretty scattered and chaotic, so I'll just give you a quick rundown of how they performed at the Sundance Film Festival:
Kamikaze Pizzeria - definitely the most hyped film at the festival. It’s a bit weird, but honestly, that’s kind of my thing... If I remember correctly, it loses a little steam toward the end.
Chronicle of a Flight - I actually liked this one. It's based on a true story and drew a decent crowd.
Buffalo Boy - For me, this felt really slow and forgettable—just another Vietnamese entry aiming for an Oscar.
Something Like Happiness - Last night, the screening at the Barbican was absolutely packed.
Winterbottom - This one is playing today, so I haven't seen it yet, but it looks mediocre to me. It seems to touch on the issues regarding women's rights in Iran, but it handles them in a sort of "that's just how it is" dismissive way.
Looking Left Looking Right - This opened the festival, and the consensus seems to be that it's just okay.

P.S. Sorry if this isn't more deep or detailed; all these movies kind of blurred together for me. 😉

Quoting a post from the official forum:
"There's going to be some stuff happening, but it’ll be much lower key and quieter... a jazz dinner, some DJ sets, and a bunch of other things, but nothing really heavy on the dancing side..."

steelstag4 said:And then there’s that absolutely brilliant, thoughtful way they wrapped up the review— Primitive. subkultura. Come on, be a sweetheart and explain to me exactly why you think they're primitive. That was such a disgusting, racist comment. 🙂

It feels incredibly wrong—and honestly, a little pseudo-politically correct—to slap that kind of label on someone else's comment when there isn't a single racist sentiment in it. Or is it just the fact that the actors in the movie are Black that makes you feel like any criticism at all is automatically racist? In your logic, it seems like the film is somehow immune to critique because of its casting. I suspect you might be jumping to heavy accusations a bit too quickly. Let's not go there.

ruggedmarlin15

P.S. If you're going to try and convince me that there's racism hidden in the comment you're referencing, please don't. I really don't want people thinking I'm just trying to start a fight.

P.P.S. Judging by how things went at the Asian film festival, you’d probably expect them to screen the Documentary somewhere outside of Washington, D.C., too...

There isn't really a reason for it. You didn't seriously think Krecak would stay as Karushifaa in the translation, did you?
Your "argument" doesn't really hold any water.

Look, do you really want me to write out a script for you? Why would I bother? Like I said before, the short terms users are searching for aren't just prepositions or conjunctions—they’re actual, legitimate expressions that just happen to be under five letters long. You wouldn't find even 5% of searches consisting of mere prepositions or conjunctions. Honestly, probably not even that much.
As for those "precious" links of yours, what's the point of having a search button if that's the case? Just put everything on Google and call it a day.

Charles Ramirez59 said:I really need to get this, but the option is disabled. It’s one of those frustrating situations where the feature is locked precisely because I would have actually been able to use it if it were open.

If that server had an IQ as high as yours, I might consider it. Otherwise, absolutely not.

Let's say this was an American forum... and someone decided to go searching for a specific word. with What would you actually get out of it? A million different results. Even Google ends up skipping over "With!" when you search for it.

Look, this isn't an American forum.
The server can skip over those little filler words too—you know, things like "and," "well," "so," or "neither." Honestly, I doubt anyone would ever go looking for posts specifically filled with suggestions anyway. I guess I was right; you just aren't quite catching my drift here.

Another thing is that you just can't predict whether you'll end up searching for INXS or "with."

Yeah, but you can still end up obsessing over the very things you’re trying to ignore. This restriction is honestly just insane. It probably only exists because they spent all their time listening to "yes-men" like you.

If you go looking for Depeche Mode without any sense of style, you’re just asking to be disappointed. It's a lost cause.

Finding Depeche Mode is easy enough, but I just can't seem to track down any good stuff from INXS.

Nothing?
Of course there is.
That word doesn't come up too often anymore. Too much., But... Or... Or... It’s all about how you say it. Geography..

You mentioned your own name earlier. Now you're changing your story. That’s a bad look.

It’s actually pretty simple—it does. You can have a whole bunch of conjunctions, adverbs, or prepositions that all together contain fewer letters than a single word like... I can't quite wrap my head around what you mean by that. Could you clarify?.

Nouns are one thing, but prepositions are another entirely. I’m really looking for posts that actually include the specific names and nouns I'm searching for, rather than just adverbs and prepositions. It’s a shame there isn't some kind of drawing board plug-in available here so I could just sketch out exactly what I mean for you.

Sure, you could argue that dogs and math have a lot in common, but the words we constantly rely on to string our sentences together—those little building blocks—are incredibly short.

You haven't actually proven anything. Tell me, who is going to sit around searching through threads using phrases like, "Yeah, but isn't it actually like this?" No one. And why? Because some people actually use their heads.

No thanks, I'll pass. Being an admin on one forum is more than enough for me; taking on two would definitely be overkill. 😢 [/B]

I honestly don't even want to picture what a forum managed by you would actually look like.

Please, read that again—that feature was disabled because it would flood you with too many results and just overwhelm the server.

You can roll your eyes all you want, but I gave you several short examples where I wouldn't get any extra results anyway, so your argument about "too many results" doesn't really hold up. Searching for "INXS" isn't going to yield more hits than searching for "Depeche Mode." Seriously. I feel like you're missing the point entirely.

Imagine if someone searched for the name "Anne" and the forum returned every single word containing those letters!!

Word length has nothing to do with how often they show up. Especially since the server doesn't search through every single variation of a word.

You didn't get nonsense, you got advice (Google), and the fact that you're too stubborn to appreciate it is another matter.

You’ve certainly proven how "smart" you are.
God forbid they ever make you an administrator.

So, if I ask anything about Cuba, INXS, U2, Live Aid, or stuff like that, I get absolutely nothing instead of actual answers. I was hoping for some real substance, not just nonsense. It is what it is.

Why is there a restriction on searching for terms shorter than five characters? I've been trying to find posts about Cuba, U2, Live Aid, or Live 8, but I keep hitting a wall. Honestly, I think this limit should be removed or at least reconsidered.

Look, Karen Diaz32, I can get just as defensive as anyone else here, but what’s the point? I’ve outgrown these kinds of petty arguments. It might be time for you to do the same.

And honestly, you weren't even in Boston, or maybe you were just being unnecessarily bitter again. When it comes to production—especially the technical side—Boston still has a massive amount to learn from our festivals (not to mention how often they try to lift our ideas). I could give you endless examples to prove it, but I don't see much point in trying. You seem to have a pretty warped perspective on this anyway.

Best,

Karen Diaz32 said:Look, ruggedmarlin15, given how small Napa Valley is, they have no trouble selling out the cinema.

Exactly. I assume the organizers know their own limits when running a festival. Otherwise, they would have just moved operations to Washington, D.C.—which is actually what BTM did, quite successfully if I may say so.

The arena in San Francisco looks totally empty even with 2,000 people inside, whereas Napa Valley feels like a ghost town with only 300 souls.

Let's not get carried away. Honestly, that point actually works in favor of Napa Valley (unless we're just indulging in some unfounded megalomania here).

even someone who isn't an expert—though you claim to be—

It seems you're trying to imply that I'm more informed than I am. I'm just writing based on what I know; if that bothers you, I'm sorry, but that's not really my concern.

Man, Steven Spielberg really messed that up, but he certainly knew how to bring in the cash.
🙂

I'm not an expert, so I won't pretend to be.

The only sad part is how everyone has an opinion and thinks they know everything, yet stays silent. It's just like those people who don't vote and then complain about politicians later.

northerncrane4 said:Here’s how things look from my perspective. I work in this field year-round, and my typical week usually consists of six ten-hour shifts.

You really are quite the worker! Are we talking about a true go-getter here, or more of a parasite type? Just let me know if you're doing all this for free, and then I'll have my answer.

Are you really trying to find excuses for those people?

I stand by the principles and the hard work put in by everyone organizing the festival. If I said earlier that I don't socialize with the higher-ups too much, I meant it—but that's just how I am.

I feel like I’m constantly witnessing these incredibly blatant acts of theft from them and everyone else like them.

Well said! Looks like someone’s outperforming you in that department, huh? Anyway, if you already know they're thieves, why stay quiet?

People like you show up once a year, brush up on the basics, and suddenly think you actually understand how festival funding works, what these people's ultimate ambitions are, or just how far they’re willing to go to achieve them. Trust me, you really don't have a clue. You truly have no idea.

Where exactly are you getting the idea that I know who I work with or how much my schedule is packed? And then you have the nerve to call me arrogant. That’s just great. FYI, I work year-round for all sorts of festivals, both here in the States and internationally. So no, I'm not just sitting around waiting for the end of July so I can grab a quick drink with the crew out in Napa Valley. Grow up, I say.

I think I've done all I can here with this post. My work on this one is finished.

I have my doubts.

northerncrane4 said:😕 Did I actually say the screenings in Napa Valley were packed?

I was quoting you. Either way, that’s how it stands, so I don't see what the big deal is.

I said the organizers are bragging about having full houses, though if you set aside the main downtown show, they aren't really doing that well.

That's just nonsense. And there isn't even one single central screening. But hey, don't bother overthinking it; clearly, it's not getting you anywhere.

Who in their right mind would give up showing a film they're supposedly so proud of and satisfied with?

Grlicev's film already had its premiere in Napa Valley, not in San Francisco. It's a great piece of work.

What even defines being in one's right mind?

You're almost there.

Anyway, what you wrote doesn't make any sense. If you think about it for a second, you'll realize—or maybe you already have, which is probably why you're being so incredibly stubborn in your boasting.

What makes you a parasite.

No, it makes me an employee. It seems some things are just hard for you to grasp.

Loyal, certainly, but still just a parasite. Because it isn't about work, but rather, as you previously stated, about making money.

This is pure nonsense. Do you work for free? Or are you a "parasite" too? I honestly love people who look down on earning money for a job well done. You guys are hilarious. Total satire.

northerncrane4 said:You really ought to make the most of your time in Napa Valley by getting to know the people whose principles you defend so passionately.

I honestly think you’re being a bit silly if you believe Steven Spielberg would suggest moving the Napa Valley festival over to San Francisco (especially since he was one of its driving forces). Especially considering, as you pointed out, that the screenings in Napa Valley are always packed. Who in their right mind would walk away from a successful festival? And for what reason? To help some sleepy, state-funded festival that pulls in several times more funding from the government? Come on, man, pull yourself together.
Maybe you misread a subtle piece of satire in the papers again?

I’m using my stay in Napa Valley for work. And for a little fun, if I find the time. That's plenty enough for me.
