My 😬

there aren't any middle grounds here 😁
you get a decent CPU, good GPU, solid motherboard... you've got the foundation for a major upgrade down the road 😛

plus the monitor has an IPS panel 😁

Adam Moore3 said:I honestly think Robert Rodriguez2 put together the most balanced build here. He managed to squeeze in a top-tier GPU without compromising on the processor, which is obviously the most critical part for gaming. He achieved that by cutting corners slightly on the RAM, using a bit of a weaker power supply, and opting for a lesser cooler. But those are all minor investments when you compare them to the heavy hitters in the rig, so if you ask me, his configuration offers the best bang for your buck. 🙂

The power supply can handle even heavier builds than this one, so there’s nothing to worry about 🙂

That cooler is better than the stock one, and he didn't mention anything about overclocking 😬

At the end of the day, having a solid CPU and GPU is what counts. Upgrading RAM later is easy enough :P

rustydriver11 said:Robert Rodriguez2 and Amy Vaughn12, thanks for the i5 builds,

but 8GB of RAM is pretty much mandatory these days. Also, using an H81 board feels like a gamble for parts at this level; how much better is the B85M actually?
One more thing—is there even a noticeable difference between CL9 and CL11 RAM, or am I wasting my time?

I’m not a fan of building budget rigs with bottom-of-the-barrel parts. I'd rather grab a cheaper GPU; you can always swap a card later, but a motherboard limits your upgrades.

As for the RAM, you won't notice any difference during normal daily use.🙂

Now I want to drop the price closer to $350 without killing the performance.

You've got the option to overclock (even if you said you don't care, it's nice to have) and you can upgrade to a better CPU later. 😛 🙂

graniteharbor85 said:First off, stay away from pre-built rigs. In 90% of cases, they're poorly put together, especially when they only give you a measly 24-month warranty on the whole thing instead of individual parts.

So, here is what a setup for your needs and budget should actually look like:

Intel Core i7-4790
ASROCK H97M PRO4
2X PATRIOT SIG 8GB 1333 MHZ (16GB)
SanDisk 120 GB SSD
Western Digital Blue 3.5 2TB SATA 3
GE FORCE GT 740 2GB DDR5
LITE ON DVD-RW SATA
EVGA Core edition 80 450W
FIREWIRE
SHARKOON MA-A1000 USB 3.0 + 140/120 MM FAN

= $2355 including assembly and shipping - Best Buy.

Everything is linked from a reliable retailer so you don't get lost, and they list all the component specs and warranty info.

Already has a FireWire card 👍

2 x DDR3 8GB (1x8GB) Crucial, 1600MHz CL11
1 x SanDisk 120 GB SSD, 120 GB capacity, 2.5"
1 x EVGA Core edition 80 450W PSU - EasyRail technology
1 x ASUS DRW-24F1ST/BLK/B/AS SATA, DVD-R 24x, DVD-RW 6x, DVD+R 24x
1 x HDD Western Digital Blue 2TB, Serial ATA III, 7200 rpm, 7200
1 x MSI GTX 750 Ti Gaming 2GB GDDR5, N750Ti TF 2GD5/OC Gaming
1 x Intel Core i7-4790 (3.60GHz,1MB,8MB,84W,1150) Box
1 x Spire Sonex 6010, ATX/micro ATX case
1 x ASRock H97-PRO4, s1150, Intel ® H97, 4 x DDR3, 1 x PCI Express

$2338
The GPU has more CUDA cores, so it'll definitely help the CPU with processing tasks. 😁
Plus, the big perk is that if you feel like playing something, you can 😁 without worrying about whether it'll actually run or not. 🙂

I’m not looking for a monitor, peripherals, or a GPU—I just picked up an AMD Radeon R7 260X recently and I want to swap that into this new rig. My budget is sitting right around $1167, so I need everything else to be properly balanced with that card. It’ll basically be a do-it-all machine, but mostly for gaming, so I need it to actually handle whatever comes out next.

right now I've got an AMD Athlon X8 $467
but I probably need a new motherboard too
I know mine's just a dual core
but I wrote earlier that the best CPU this board can handle is an Intel Core 2 Quad
and I'm looking at 8GB RAM minimum

You can grab an x8 core 8320 for $367. It's the exact same thing as that 8350 you have, yours just has a higher clock speed. It's like buying a truck just because the paint is a different shade; the $100 difference isn't worth the extra cash.

Windows Ultimate 64-bit

CPU
Intel Pentium E6600 3.06
RAM
4GB Dual Channel 398MHz DDR3
Motherboard ASRock G41M-VS3
and you already know the GPU

That’s a dual core, not a quad core...
Go check some quads for LGA 775 on eBay if you can't afford a full system upgrade.

It’s not my graphics card.

It’s not about whether this thing can handle games or not. I want a better CPU, which means I need a better motherboard to go with it.
Can the one I have handle an Intel Core 2 Quad?
Everyone keeps saying it's total junk.

Got any recommendations?
And I've got a GTS 450 1GB GDDR5 for the GPU.

Download Speccy and just paste your specs here.

Core 2 Quads still hold their own. Your GPU is what’s actually dragging you down in games. It's just not a gaming card, plain and simple.

I need the specifics: motherboard, RAM, and exactly which CPU you're running. Also, pop the case open and tell me what power supply you've got in there.

Did the guy actually come in and ask for a build he could upgrade in a year? No. So, this is a balanced configuration.

Exactly, that's the question. That's why it's built for current needs, because nobody knows how Grand Theft Auto V is going to perform or what its requirements will actually be. And you keep bringing up $667. It might not even cross your mind that the guy might just want to buy a computer he doesn't necessarily plan on upgrading anytime soon.

Just let him be. Clearly he has no clue. Let him buy a rig with 4GB of RAM just so he can struggle through it and upgrade to 2TB later...

The rest of us are busy building systems that actually meet people's current needs and will last a reasonable amount of time.🙂
