Timothy Kim60 said:rapidpuma59 - It’s way too early to tell. The 960 isn't even out yet, but it'll definitely be weaker than an R9 290. Might be cheaper, though, and it won't suck up nearly as much power... Nobody knows anything yet.
BTW, have you guys seen what those cards look like? 😬
rapidpuma59 said:Everything seems fine, but even three grand is pushing my budget too far. And nobody's even mentioning the R9 cards. Is it because they underperform or are you guys just not expecting the price to drop much?
It's because you don't need a massive power supply for a new Nvidia card. It'll run just fine on an EVGA 450W, or if you want some breathing room, grab a decent 500W unit. But for a 290X or anything higher, you need more juice—at least 550W so you aren't redlining it.😳
If that holds true—the price on the GTX 970 is a solid surprise. If they pull this off, prices will likely tank until the next generation hits the shelves. We might see the R9 290 going for pocket change.
Given the performance you get, I actually expected the GTX 970 to be priced higher. This is a nice little win.
There are already some heavy-hitting reviews online... the GTX 970 handles overclocking pretty well. jays2cents managed to push the Nvidia graf by an insane 200mhz core. 😳 The card is a total beast for 1080p gaming.😳

Don't bother overthinking the specs. You won't be able to run the game at max settings anyway. If you manage to pull off Medium settings, consider yourself lucky. 😁

Kimberly Richardson2 said:dustyskipper77, thanks—so you're saying it’s not really worth dropping that much cash on a better monitor? To be honest, I’m not even sure what would be a smart move here. Maybe an SSD? I know from my own experience how much of a difference an SSD makes for speed, but then again, a new monitor actually improves the visual experience 🙂
It looks like we found the right way to pay at futur. If I’m reading their website correctly, they allow online payments via American Express with up to 6 installments. I wonder if their selection or pricing is any better than what you'd find at Best Buy?
Yeah, cheaper and better selection:

Since then, the card has effectively ceased to exist; my frame rate has plummeted from a steady 60 down to a pathetic 5 or 10. Even though all the fans are spinning and the GPU temperature reads a reasonable 67.5°C, the card itself feels scorching to the touch. I perform this maintenance every few months without issue, yet today was an anomaly. Any advice on how to fix this? I have GTA and Battlefield waiting for me.
Did you actually get the new thermal paste on the GPU core? Something didn't seat right, for sure.
Regarding the install, I know how it works—or I used to, anyway, since it's been years—but I don't have the discs on me. Time is money right now and I'm swamped, so I was hoping I could just walk into a shop, get the whole system set up with all the drivers and everything ready to go.
Might be a dumb question, but can I run most modern games on this setup?
Also, for wireless, would something like this suffice?
You'll play without any issues on that rig.🙂 Basically, your build costs about $800, and $260 Windows is included; you can just tell them when you order to handle the Windows and driver installation for you. 🙂 http://www.bestbuy.com/product_info.php?c...oducts_id=7611
There’s already a Wi-Fi adapter built into your config. 😁
