copperhawk19 said:Well, I could use some advice on a new build. My cousin ended up wrecking my old PC. The only parts I can actually salvage are the hard drives. The processor seems to have survived the damage, but I'm thinking about selling it.
My plan is to go with an Intel Core i5-7600K. I'm also looking at that AMD card since I already own a 1440p FreeSync monitor.
I'm looking to stay under $6,000, and I'll probably need to pay for it in installments.

You can't find AMD cards anywhere right now, and even if you do, they're overpriced. Prices spiked massively because everyone's buying them up for crypto mining again.

MSI GTX1050Ti 4GB OC, 4GB GDDR5, DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort

$2.00 - ADM

Nicely put together 👍
You can swap the GPU whenever you want, and the rest of the rig can handle it when the time comes.
Plus, the 1050Ti is solid for 1080p.

Timothy Kim60 said:Obviously go with the new GTX 1050 Ti. You get a full 3-year warranty, it pulls way less power, and let's face it, the R9 380 isn't even stronger.

This one is a better deal for you.

For that price, you can grab a GTX 1050 Ti too.
hollowfalcon said:Hey there!

I need some advice on a server build. Budget is around $8 $0.00 plus a GPU (maybe more if I actually need it)

The plan is to use it for
  • KVM virtualization running Windows and Ubuntu servers
  • DIALux for 3D modeling [WRD]
  • GALA software [WRD]
  • Ubuntu web server
  • NAS [Nextcloud]

My baseline requirements look like this:
  • CPU: 4C/8T
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • GPU: NVIDIA Quadro or FirePro
  • 3 SSDs (120GB) for the Host and 2 Guests (we have HDDs for the NAS)

Can be a pre-built or custom parts. Since I'm running DIALux, I definitely need a GPU—something like a Quadro or FirePro. Ideally, I'd like to find a shop here in the US.

Thanks in advance!

From what I can tell, you don't actually need a FirePro or a Quadro for that software. I picked out this card instead. Anything from those high-end series would cost twice or even three times as much as this one.

It sounds like you have drives for the NAS, but you want 5 SSDs—3 for clients and 2 for guest users—so I set it up that way.
I went with an AMD platform because it handles multitasking well, which helps when you're juggling virtualization and running all that specific software at once.

Seagate Barracuda 1 TB SATAIII 2 x
2x Crucial Ballistix Sport LT Red 8GB DDR4-2400 UDIMM
The ADATA Ultimate SU800 128GB SATA III SSD. It’s basic, but it gets the job done.
The Zalman Z1.
The AMD Ryzen 5 1400. It gets the job done, but don't expect miracles.
The ASRock AB350M Pro4.
Gigabyte RX 460 WindForce OC 2GB
XFX 500W XT 80+ Bronze.

Total: 5 $123 Amazon (NYC, free assembly/shipping)

Look, you can just start with 8GB of RAM and then upgrade to 16GB later down the road. It’s that simple. $156 Not really. This Ryzen 5 1400 is a decent step up from an i5 3350P since you get those 8 threads. The GPU is definitely weaker than an R9 380, but it’ll still handle games just fine. Check it out on YouTube. YouTube Is it even powerful enough? 😉

I might just go with this setup. You get everything you need right out of the box. The GPU isn't exactly top-tier, but it'll handle 1080p gaming and recording gameplay just fine. 🙂
It all depends on what you're planning to play. 🙂
Timothy Kim60 said:So much drama. Some guy on a forum is claiming Western Digital isn't even selling laptops in Europe anymore, though I'm not sure if there's actually a connection here.

That would be a massive shitshow if true. Most of the time, when people ask me about budget options, I just tell them to go with Western Digital.😁

velvetmoose9 said:Check your radial pulse. Put your index and middle fingers right under that area on the thumb side of your wrist—there’s a groove there, you can't miss it.
If you feel a pulse and your hand isn't cold, you can wait until tomorrow and then call your primary care doctor.

Use ice packs, apply some Voltaren or generic ibuprofen gel, or maybe some Diclofenac—assuming you aren't allergic to any of that stuff.

Just take it easy. Rest up.

You probably did pushups on your palms and messed up the alignment in your carpal tunnel. Or, it could be a fracture 😲, so you definitely need a pro to look at it.

I can feel a pulse, hand feels warm... normal, just swollen
And yeah, I was doing pushups on my palms on a concrete floor.
Applied some cream last night. Felt slightly better, but this morning it's back to how it was yesterday.

Waiting at the doctor's office now.

Hey, not sure if this is the right spot for this. If not, mods, please move the thread.

So, here's the deal. I started working out again a few days ago after a long break. Just bodyweight stuff—pull-ups, push-ups, the basics. No weights involved, just my own mass.

By the second day, the soreness hit me hard. I had to skip the next session because the pain was unreal; I couldn't even straighten my arms. They were stuck in this half-bent position.
For the next two days, I kept both arms wrapped in ACE bandages to dull the pain while trying to slowly stretch them back to normal.
The pain eventually died down, but my left arm has felt tight ever since. It still feels tight right now.
I managed to get through a workout the day before yesterday, and the arm seemed fine then. But today at work, I noticed my left forearm is swelling up. It’s about an inch wider than the right one. The swelling is moving toward my wrist, and it's starting to hurt, plus there's this tension running from my elbow upward.

I'm at work right now and won't be home until 8 PM. Should I be worried? What should I do?

wiredotter14 said:Sometimes it makes sense, but for these specific parts, you aren't looking at any major savings

I gave you a build from Best Buy
Elon Musk suggested one from IBM

And both end up being pretty much the same. The tiny differences just come down to what two different shops happen to have in stock. Messing around with custom combos won't save you more than $17.

If you grab everything from one place, they'll usually put the whole thing together for free (works for both of those stores). I think IBM even offers free shipping if you buy the full set.

Yeah, Microsoft offers free assembly and shipping on orders over $667

Probably because it outpaces the Toshiba, plus you get that longer 5-year warranty.

Ryan Gonzalez4 said:To be clear, I’m not talking about pushing past 2K when it comes to monitors, nor am I suggesting I’d ever pick up an AMD's card. That part is obvious enough, but the real question remains: where do we draw the line? It's the same dilemma as deciding whether to grab a GTX 1080; the real issue is figuring out what actually makes sense for the wallet. Is it better to invest in something substantial now for $2267 and enjoy it for years, or should I just pick up a card for roughly $1000 and prepare to buy another one from $1000 in just a few years?

My current setup:
Samsung SyncMaster P2770HD.
1155soc, i5 3570K OC 4GHz
Corsair H80 High Performance Liquid Cooler
Corsair RAM 4x4GB, DDR3, 1600MHz
1155soc, MSI Z77A-G45 gaming
SLI (2x) Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 G1 gaming Samsung SSD 850
Samsung SSD 850 Evo 500GB
Corsair hx850i
1TB HDD
500GB HDD
nzxt phantom 410

What I'm planning to buy:
i5-7600K
Corsair 2x8GB DDR4 3000 C15, CMK16GX4M2B30C15
Gigabyte GA-Z270-Gaming K3
GPU ????

Upgrading an i5 to another i5 isn't really an upgrade. In my book, swapping CPUs like that is a waste of cash.

Like they said, if you aren't in a rush, just hang tight for another couple of weeks. The new Ryzen 3 and Ryzen 5 chips are dropping soon, and those would be a much better fit for you.🙂

Cheers.

For a "budget" unit, Hyper is fine. Most power supplies in this price bracket aren't even touching a 5-year warranty.

Zachary Barrett4 said:Checking out some incremental upgrades for my rig. I've noticed Tomb Raider and Ubisoft titles starting to chug on ultra settings using my GTX 970 🤔

I'm torn between an RX 480 8 GB and a GTX 1060 6 GB, though I'm leaning toward AMD right now.

Rest of the build:
FX8350
8 GB DDR3
GA-990FX-UD3 rev 1.1
Corsair PSU 650W
1080p

Found the 480 for about $667 locally; selling the 970 should cover part of the cost.

Just drop the settings to high. You won't notice much difference in visuals, but you'll definitely grab some extra FPS.

That’s actually a solid deal for a quad core, especially if you're just building a cheap budget gaming rig.🙂

fadedeagle5 said:Thanks for all the advice, everyone—I’ve weighed every suggestion and focused on hunting down the best deals I could find.

I ended up pulling the trigger on an Intel Core i5-6500, an MSI Z170-A PRO motherboard, and a FSP Hyper 500W power supply. I'm still waiting on a 240GB SSD and an 8GB RAM stick (to go along with the 4GB I already have sitting here), so once those arrive, I'll be putting the whole rig together in a few days.

The graphics card is going to have to wait a bit—once my budget allows, I'm aiming for an NVIDIA GTX 1050. This entire setup cost me $1100, so fingers crossed everything runs smooth as silk.

You bought a board you don't need. It's built for overclocking, but your CPU can't even overclock. You wasted money there that should've gone toward the GPU.

Eric Alvarez said:It’s entirely possible that your motherboard has fried several ports, perhaps including a PCI slot and a few USB connections. A friend of mine dealt with the exact same thing—a lightning strike hit his place and completely toasted his hardware. You might want to try testing it with a different motherboard or just pick up a USB wireless adapter to get back online.

🤦
So you're talking about fried USB ports and maybe even the PCI, and then your big solution is to buy a USB Wi-Fi adapter? 🤦🤦
