I’ve got this electronic blood pressure monitor that’s all over the place—one minute it’s high, the next it’s low. It's totally inconsistent.

I think I heard someone on TV mention a specific brand that actually carries medical-grade certification or something similar, but the name escapes me.

They claimed it was the only brand with that kind of validation...

Does anyone happen to know which brand they were talking about?

Did you guys change the fonts on Reddit, or is this just how it looks because I'm using Internet Explorer 8 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux right now?
Did Josip Broz Marshall really have $2 billion? in Close to Politics ·
If FDR really stashed two billion dollars in Swiss accounts, as some outlets are claiming—and let's face it, that's money he basically embezzled—I don't see why Jovanka or Mexico should get a single cent. That money belongs to all the former republics of America.

The US government needs to look into this and challenge those ownership claims right now.

Cybersecurity - Suggestion for a new subforum in Feedback & Suggestions ·
As a first step, maybe change "Security" to "Cybersecurity and IT" or something similar.

And it's not just about the non-native speakers. It's more about how using the word "Security" alone feels a bit too "nerdy," which might make people think this sub-forum isn't for everyone.

Benjamin King2 said:You're being a bit contradictory... you mention the potential value of education, yet claim people aren't interested. What's the point then? There are threads about this on the security subforum, and most people just show up looking for help after an infection—which, in most cases, happened because they weren't paying attention. That proves they don't care about education; if they did, they would have looked into it already. The internet is huge. The general public has access to that subforum too.

Cybersecurity issues have been around since the internet started and they aren't going anywhere. It’s not some temporary hype. If you disagree, back it up.

If you actually have a topic idea that stands out from the usual stuff on the security subforum, go ahead and start it. Let's see what happens.

You're not reading me closely enough.
When I say the general public won't visit specialized IT forums, I don't mean they don't care about their own security. It's more that they feel intimidated by places where geeks and freaks hang out, talking about that "complicated computer world"...

And look, I'm not saying we need brand-new topics to justify a whole new subforum. Like I said before, grouping security topics together improves the "ergonomics" of the subject—makes it psychologically accessible. More importantly, it encourages the average person to think about security as its own category. It shouldn't be seen as "geek stuff" or "freak territory"; it belongs to everyone, even the tech-illiterate.

Your arguments are typical of a purely technical mindset that misses the psychological side of the issue.

That’s my point exactly. If a subforum is dedicated to web development, you won't find the general public there—just people who code.

That’s why we need a separate section for security questions. It should be designed for regular people, not just programmers or IT geeks.

I just watched a pretty unsettling segment on Cybercrime - CNN - NBC about how vulnerable we actually are. They showed how at a recent international hacking conference held in Washington, D.C., hackers managed to break through valid security protocols and certificates used by most major banks. There was also this wild report on Russian hackers gathering data on bank accounts worldwide—they actually demonstrated live to the reporters how they could breach accounts belonging to citizens, and even managed to hack a U.S. military site to pull personal info on soldiers stationed in or returning from Iraq, including details on generals and colonels.
PREDLAŽEM:

We should start a dedicated cybersecurity subforum here on Reddit.

I know people will argue that specialized forums already exist online or that these questions can just go into the existing tech sections of Reddit.

But honestly, beyond the language aspect, the general vibe of Reddit makes it the perfect spot for a security subforum. It allows regular people—the ones who wouldn't dream of visiting niche technical boards—to actually access this information. The potential for educating the general public is way higher here.

Plus, having a specific security section alongside our current tech threads makes sense. Cybersecurity is such a massive, burning issue in IT right now that it deserves its own space so these critical topics don't just get buried under general tech chatter.

Centralizing this info makes it much more useful for the average user. By giving this specific problem its own zone, we make vital information actually accessible to the people who need it most.

I can't bring myself to pay for a subscription—it's just a matter of principle.

Time to go hunting for a new Reddit community...

Any suggestions?

And that’s not even mentioning all the political chatter during the voting itself!

The Eurovision Song Contest shouldn't be used as a platform for political beef between two countries.

The Georgians openly admitted it was a play on words, making it clear they wanted to send a political message straight to Vladimir Putin and the Russians right in the middle of Moscow.
If they want to send political messages to Vladimir Putin, they can do it at some livestock fair in Batumi instead.

So, the commission didn't really have a choice.

Even if the Georgians hadn't admitted it, the whole thing is too obvious. Even the grammar is off—proper English would be "we don't want to put in something," not just "we don't want put in." It wouldn't have passed regardless.
"The European Broadcasting Union has officially notified Georgian National Television that their song lyrics for the 54th Eurovision Song Contest fail to meet competition regulations," according to an official statement from the organizers.

The title, "We don't want put in," is a play on the English verb "to put in" and Vladimir Putin's name.

I don't see the issue here. If the rules prohibit political songs—and this wordplay is pretty blatant—the committee didn't really have a choice but to follow the rulebook and reject what is essentially a political provocation.

How to stop my swimming goggles from fogging up? in Miscellaneous ·
I’ve got two pairs of swim goggles with polycarbonate lenses.

The issue is the fogging.

The old-school trick of spitting on the lens only works half the time on one of them (it's an Aquafina model—link below), and it doesn't work at all on the other.

Does anyone know of a better anti-fog coating specifically for these kinds of plastic lenses?

Housing in Siberia apparently costs the government $220 a day—that’s roughly a third of what it would cost to house a kid in a juvenile facility over in Germany.

That's a lot of cash. If the Americans are smart, they'll turn it into a business. Especially since those "re-education" camps probably still have plenty of "expertise" left over from the good old days...
Russians just aren't cut out for democracy.

Then again, neither are the people living in those so-called "democratic" Western nations...

At this rate, democracy is eventually going to lead to the total collapse of the West.
Mosquito bites and stings in Health ·
I just got off the phone with my cousin over in California (specifically in the Malibu area), and she mentioned—just as a side note—that there’s a swarm of these "striped" black and white mosquitoes popping up that she’s never seen before.

Since I remember reading in a scientific journal about these specific mosquitoes—the ones with white spots on dark bodies that carry things like Dengue, Yellow fever, and other nasty stuff—I asked her if she could catch one and describe it to me.

The description she gave matches the Aedes aegypti perfectly: white spots and black and white legs.

Given that this is a known disease vector, seeing this mosquito show up here in the US is, I think, pretty concerning.

Does anyone know which epidemiological agency or local health department in the US or California I should report this sighting to?

My cousin lives near a stagnant pond where mosquitoes seem to breed (they haven't had sheep there for a long time), so I'm wondering if an agency could actually force the local municipality to treat the water or even drain it if it turns out this species really has arrived.

(Of course, I realize that seeing the mosquito doesn't automatically mean the disease is present; if they aren't carrying the virus, there's no danger. But still, these guys seem to have come out of nowhere...)
