Hey there... just a quick question regarding whether an upgrade is actually worth it...
I'm currently running an ASUS motherboard paired with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX, but someone offered me a P35 CF setup along with two gigabyte 3870s instead. I guess you could say I'm wondering if that's actually a good deal? Thanks.

Or you could just go with this one from Best Buy:

Just picked up a GTX 460...
Thanks...
Not trying to start a whole new thread here...
Looking for some advice on a GPU... a friend of mine is planning to pick up something used for under $333, so I figured I'd see if anyone had any input...
What do you guys think about this one?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/graphic-card-listing-1946031Or maybe...

Bryan Evans77 said:Yeah, basically... that card is a beast. It’s significantly more powerful than a GeForce 8800 GT across the board. The only downside is the lack of DX11 support, but if you've been playing on just DX10 anyway, I guess you might not even miss it.🙂
No, I don't think I'll miss it. DX10 is perfectly fine by me. As long as the GPU performs well enough for me to actually enjoy my games, that's what matters. Honestly, I wouldn't even be looking to swap my current one out if it hadn't started struggling lately. I suppose I'll take your advice into consideration.🙂
Thanks,
Bryan Evans77 said:why wouldn't you look at something like a 4870 1GB??
it pulls more power, sure, but it's stronger than the GeForce 8800 GT, and still newer than the 3870..
you can find them for about $110 now -$267...
Something like this?
http://www.craigslist.org/listing/graphics-card-ad-12345I haven't really kept up with GPUs lately. I haven't had any reason to upgrade my current one (GeForce 8800 GT), so I haven't given it much thought. That's why I'm considering any advice I get🙂
So, you think the 4870 might be a better value?
Bryan Evans77 said:The 3870 dual might work, but it's pretty dated—it belongs to the 3xxx series while we're already looking at 6xxx... You'd probably be better off grabbing a GeForce 8800 GT; it's newer, supports DX11, runs cooler, pulls less power, and performs like a beast...
I realize it's older. Still, you get that dual setup. Plus, from what I've seen online, used prices for the 3870 and the GeForce 8800 GT are basically neck and neck.
Those specific perks you mentioned about the 8800 GT are actually what's making it look tempting...
Alright, thanks. 🙂
Hey everyone...
Back again with more indecision. I'm still planning on picking up a new graphics card, and I've got until Christmas to make it happen...
If I go the new route, I'll probably grab a GeForce 8800 GT, though I've been browsing the used market too.
I'm stuck right now. Should I get the card mentioned above, or maybe just look for a used 3870 dual?
Something like this
What do you guys think? Is that a solid choice, or should I keep looking?
Thanks
darkowl72 said:actually, not really... just kidding, you deal with the buy-sell hassle, none of the warranties are left, then there's the whole uninstalling and reinstalling thing... plus, the performance gap isn't all that huge...
I'd probably just save up for a new HD 5750 or HD 5770 (around $800$333 right now, though prices will likely drop by the end of the year)... I know you're mostly looking at $67 differences, but in my opinion, the performance boost just isn't worth all that trouble...
So, one of those HD cards then...
Alright, thanks...
Hey there...
Quick question for you guys...
Is it actually worth upgrading my GPU right now?
Current setup: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
Potential upgrade: AMD Radeon HD 4850
The rest of the build: Gigabyte P35 DS3 motherboard,
Intel Core 2 Duo e8200,
and 3 GB of RAM.
The AMD card would run me about $167 a certain amount, but I could probably offload my current one for maybe $40 or $50.
I guess I'm just wondering if this move makes any sense.
Thanks.
Yeah, a 36-month warranty... I guess that might be my only way out. Though I'll probably need to track down some kind of replacement monitor 🙂
Anyway.. thanks a lot
@Casey Long2/">@
@Casey Long2... you think it might be the signal cable? I guess I can try that, though I doubt it'll fix anything.
@darkowl72/">@
@darkowl72... most of my cables are about five feet away from the monitor. I don't have any power bricks near it, just the PC tower itself. My case is sitting right next to the screen.
It’s stopped flickering for now... seems like it was only happening at first before the monitor warmed up. But still, those glitches... and they only happen at the highest resolution. If there were actual interference, wouldn't it happen at lower resolutions too?
Now all I need is to go out and buy a whole new monitor. Great.
hey there..
so here's the deal.. I've got a 19" Asus monitor that's about a year and a half old. Lately, whenever I crank it up to its max resolution (1440x900), the screen starts flickering. It's kind of like how old monitors used to act when a cell phone rang right next to them, though this is way more intense and lasts longer.
It’s actually doing it right now; it flickers for a bit, then settles down for maybe thirty minutes to an hour before suddenly starting up again.
I guess it might be time to just buy a new one? 😕
thanks
I actually quite enjoyed this movie... nothing groundbreaking, but pretty satisfying and easy to watch.
To be honest, I’m not usually a fan of Nicolas Cage, but he actually surprised me here. I guess these "lowlife" roles just suit him better.
edit-that scene with the lizards was great 🙂)
wiredmarlin5 said:If you aren't sure what you're doing, just reset everything to defaults. With a little bit of effort, that CPU could probably run at 3600MHz+ indefinitely. 🙂
But honestly, if you don't actually need the extra processing power, just drop it back to 2.66GHz. 😉
Hmm... I mean, am I even going to see a real performance boost at this frequency? Is it even worth the trouble?
I bumped up the clock speed and the voltage slightly (from 1.225v to 1.237), so nothing crazy... that's pretty much all I did.
Just one question... I’ve got an Intel E 8200 running at a default frequency of 2.66 GHz, but I've overclocked it to 3.0 GHz. Is it actually safe to just leave the processor at that speed and use the computer normally without worrying about anything breaking?
I don't really have much experience with this stuff, so sorry if this sounds like a dumb question... I just don't want to risk ruining anything.🙂
Jacob Long said:Do you seriously think getting a diagnosis from a forum is going to lead to you actually getting meds??? 🙄
Maybe they're just looking for some info or a bit of direction on what to do next. Is there really a need to go on the attack immediately?
Hey everyone...
Here’s my current setup...
Intel Pentium 4
Foxconn Winfast 250GB
1.5 GB DDR1 Kingmax
ATI 1950 Pro 256 MB
I'm trying to overclock my CPU, but every time I bump up the frequency and run 3DMark 05, I get a blue screen or the whole system just freezes... any idea why??
I haven't touched the voltage yet, just the frequency...
I'm definitely not an expert at overclocking, so if anyone who actually knows what they're doing could give me a hand... thanks.
Pathetic and miserable. If I had a rope nearby, I’d probably hang myself. Or at least if I had my meds. Just to sleep through this and send everything around me straight to hell.
