Love Actually (2010) in Movies ·
Look, *Love Actually* is one of those rare romantic flicks that I’ve actually sat through more than once—on TV, on DVD, I even went through the whole hassle of downloading it back in the day. It really clicked with me, and honestly, it's probably one of my favorites. I didn't exactly choose to watch this Saint Valentine's Day crap on my own, though; I only put it on because someone else was dying to see it. I guess I’m just a pretty tolerant and flexible person like that. But if I’m being real? The movie is a total mess. It’s just a massive pile of famous actors thrown together with a decent concept, but the actual execution is just... meh. Such a shame.

All those Lynchian pieces... man, you just can't replicate that atmosphere the master builds
Blade Runner, obviously. I saw it for the first time when I was just a kid—maybe five or six?—and the movie just... gripped me. Of course, back then I didn't have a clue what was actually happening on screen, but that feeling has stayed with me ever since. It’s kind of similar to how I felt about Lynch's Dune; that was just one totally wild experience for me as a little kid.
As for 2001: A Space Odyssey, I’ve watched it three times now, and honestly, I’ve never really experienced it as a "movie." To me, it feels more like some sort of high-concept art documentary traveling through space with just a tiny sprinkle of drama thrown in (you know, the whole thing with HAL). I guess you have to give Kubrick credit, though; he made something visually and atmospherically incredible that was just completely different from anything else at the time. I suppose that's why it reached such cult status.
The Descent: Part 2 (2009) in Movies ·
I’ve got a bad feeling about this one. Honestly, I highly doubt it’s going to land. The plot feels pretty shallow, and compared to the first movie, there isn't a shred of originality left. I mean, who in their right mind would ever go back into those caves after everything that went down? Such a shame.

Look, this movie isn't total trash. All things considered, it’s just a mediocre action flick with some decent moments mixed in with the bad ones—but honestly, what really gets under my skin is all that wasted potential.
What worked for me: The atmosphere in certain stretches, the way they played with colors and visual effects, and that cool blend of futuristic tech mixed with a turn-of-the-century vibe. Plus, Ron Perlman :-)
What didn't work: The story... man, it had so much potential, but it just completely falls apart by the end. Those last 30 minutes were totally unwatchable, and the acting was pretty rough (though I guess that's somewhat expected given the caliber of this production). Okay, I should probably mention I watched this without subtitles, and the rip quality wasn't exactly great either—so maybe that’s part of why I ended up feeling a bit let down.
Conclusion: It's a shame. Good idea, poor execution.
