Best CPU cooler for an old processor? in Desktops ·
I was thinking about the Noctua NH-D15, with a TDP of 115W
The Alpina isn't up to the task at 65W TDP

I saw this on Craigslist

An Intel Core i3 on an FM2 socket (not sure if your board even supports it) for $117. It’s a quad-core running at 3.8GHz... looks like it doesn't even have integrated graphics included... honestly feels a bit overpriced

Someone else is bundling an ASRock FM2A75M-DGS motherboard with a 6600K processor for $117
In that case, an fx 8350 would probably be the best CPU for this game since it's 8c 8t🙂

The game is just poorly optimized, plain and simple

So just let us know what you ended up going with and how much it cost you...
Maybe that game is just misreporting your CPU usage. It lists a Core Duo at 3GHz as the bare minimum, but recommends an fx 6300 or an i5 3470 at 3.2GHz. They suggest 6GB of RAM and a gtx 660 or HD 7870 for graphics, so on your PC build, it should absolutely fly if you're running Windows 7 or 8

That could work too... check out some reviews on YouTube to see how people actually handled it

I finally got my old Macintosh fired up, but how the heck do I get it to show anything on a modern monitor or—God forbid—an HDMI display?

Forget about monitors and HDMI unless you plan on scouring YouTube for a workaround.

Try an old-school TV. Use RCA cables via Scart or some other adapter. You could even try the antenna inputs on both the TV and the Macintosh since it has one. It just occurred to me you might be able to plug it into a modern LCD TV through the antenna port too... just turn the Mac on and scan for channels. Of course, that only works if the LCD TV still supports analog signals; it won't work on digital.

So, what's the plan for it? Let me know if you get it working.

You could also try a Scart-to-HDMI converter...

Maybe you could track down a broken AM4 motherboard somewhere just to harvest the plastic shrouds if they’re standard... local repair shops might have some lying around

That move by crimsonstag84 is a solid upgrade...

No matter how much you think you don't need a better CPU, passing up a Phenom for $50 is just a mistake

Plus, finally ditching that old generic power supply is a huge win

The GTX 750 is still an excellent card

I totally forgot 😢

And you really need to watch out for that...

Here’s what you can run on that motherboard. First, check which BIOS version you're running. The max CPU power draw for this board is 95W, so don't try anything more powerful than that...

Go with something like an FX 6300 or an FX 8300... both sit right at that 95W limit... just forget about overclocking...

Grab a used GTX 1060—you might even find one that still has some warranty left...

If you want more power, you'll need a newer PSU, maybe something from Fortron

This would be a solid deal for you

You didn't mention which motherboard you're using, so check which CPU actually fits on it.

Seriously, don't be an idiot—just drop a Phenom X4 965 in there and you'll have a processor twice as powerful as what you're running now...

Of course, you'll need to swap out the GPU too... the power supply should be fine if it's from a reputable brand.

It all really comes down to how much cash you want to drop and what kind of gaming experience you're looking for.

fadedorca66 makes a good point—don't go overboard or bury yourself in debt for a setup like this

Personally, I think the Phenom 945 is overpriced and closer to $50. You might snag one for $67, but getting an x3 720 for $33 is a steal. It’s only slightly slower, and honestly, just look at the numbers here

https://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/83?vs=80

As for the cooler, if you're using the stock one, it isn't great. Usually, I'd suggest something like an LC 95 or similar for about $33

Having plenty of RAM is fine, but even 8GB will work perfectly for you. Especially since you can use an SSD as extra virtual memory for a fast page file—it'll be just as snappy as the RAM on your current PC... I'm not entirely sure if you need to tweak anything or if it's automatic, but usually, the page file kicks in automatically when you hit low RAM mode and a program needs more space

The most important thing is the SSD. Get that first, see how happy you are with the PC, and then maybe decide what else you want

Then look into a different CPU if you really feel the need

A solid power supply is also a good idea. A Fortron Hexsa 400W is around $100, but only grab that if you're satisfied with the build and think it can push through another few years
Audio issues after GPU swap in Desktops ·
So, is it actually outputting sound through the HDMI?

Try enabling the HDMI audio within the Control Panel....

I had this exact same headache once. I went into the BIOS, switched the audio over to HDMI, rebooted, and then switched it back to the motherboard's onboard audio... and suddenly it worked. It made zero sense... some kind of glitch between the drivers, maybe DirectX, and the hardware itself...

Check your BIOS... see if the audio is set to HDMI or the onboard sound card

Yeah, definitely better to go with the 1600X and an R9 380

Use this to compare graphics cards

http://hwbench.com/vgas/geforce-gt-7...-radeon-r5-230

The most important thing is checking the power draw on your card. You'll want to grab a beefier power supply if your current one can't handle it... For example, if a card like an HD 6870 pulls 150W, it would be smart to look for a 550-600W unit. Something budget-friendly like an EVGA 600W office series from $87 works, but a higher-end unit from brands like Corsair is also a solid choice...

Anything over 30fps is fine; anything under that is rough

This one would be a good pick

https://www.ebay.com/itm/graphics-card-listing-example

It doesn't need extra power connectors, but having two gigs of VRAM would be better

This one is dirt cheap, but you might need a stronger PSU since it pulls 130W

That last one is slightly more powerful for you

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 is stronger than the GTX 750 or the HD 7850. It pulls 140W and has 2GB of VRAM
