What's the best multimeter to buy? in Hardware ·

Something like this from Trader Joe's, or maybe anywhere else... around $30
Wi-Fi range extenders: any recommendations? in Hardware ·
You know those guys who basically plug themselves into wall outlets? Or maybe something more like this ....if there's an antenna port on their PC's Wi-Fi card

Fair point. The motherboard doesn't support 1333MHz, so neither the E6750 nor the E8400 will work on it...

So we're stuck with your suggestions: the E6700, Q6600, or maybe the Q6700.

He should just sell that GT 710 and grab something else. Something low-power, too—his power supply is probably junk...

Alexander Moore67 said:All these "experts" know the latest stuff for your upgrade. Your best bet is the Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 3.2GHz. Just add some RAM and an $200 NVIDIA GeForce GT 710. That dual-core E6700 will absolutely crush those quad cores. Besides, Socket 775 won't cut it for modern games, and your motherboard is stuck at 1066 FSB.

You clearly haven't seen this video showing how you can actually play newer titles

They used a Q8400 for comparison here, but the E8400 is $17 so there's really no point stepping down to a weaker E6700... they used an E6750 for the benchmark

I don't see much sense in getting a new GT 710 when for $133 you could just find a used NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660, whether it's the standard one or even a
high-end model.
The E8400 and E6700 destroy everything if the game only needs two cores, but once it demands four, everything falls apart...

And even when gaming on an E8400

Interesting... if I'm following correctly, the guy has 4GB of RAM, and if the game demands more, it just creates a page file on the SSD. Since an SSD is basically a faster version of a hard drive, it wouldn't surprise me if this actually runs smoother than old DDR2 setups... using a standard hard drive instead of an SSD would be way slower. The real question is whether it's even playable at all... fascinating 🙂

His new setup for gaming is basically $667—a motherboard, G2200, 8GB DDR4 RAM, plus an old hard drive, power supply, and case...

He should just grab one of those quads mentioned above and start playing. Newer games will run at 720p resolution. Honestly, his bigger bottleneck is having only 4GB of RAM rather than the processor. If he can manage to get 6GB of DDR2 RAM, he could run pretty much anything out there... provided he has a decent graphics card. For example, GTA 5 runs on an AMD Radeon HD 6870, or maybe a card like $67 or less... if he wants the newest Wolfenstein, he’ll need at least an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770, or better yet, an AMD Radeon HD 7770 or HD 7870. That would also handle BF1. BF1 actually runs on an AMD Radeon HD 6870. Older Wolfenstein titles will work on the AMD Radeon HD 6870, along with Old Blood... maybe even with just 4GB of RAM. I'm pretty sure about that...

The new COD works fine with 6GB of DDR2 and a card with 2GB VRAM, like an R9 270...

An Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 handles older COD titles without any issues, plus Metro, Bioshock Infinite, Singularity... and it costs about $17 🙂 including the motherboard. Maybe $150 🙂 for 5GB of RAM, though it would probably work with 4GB too...

Plus, you can get 8GB of DDR2 RAM for $67, while a new one is $267. The issue is if the board only has two slots, because finding 2x4GB DDR2 sticks is tough... but that's an option too...
PC buying advice needed in Desktops ·
What you’ve got there is actually 10G, not 3

That processor was released back on July 16, 2007

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_2...557E6750).html

It's not terrible for watching movies or browsing the web, but a cheap upgrade to a better CPU is definitely an option...
PC buying advice needed in Desktops ·
Of course it is, just grab 2x4GB of RAM so you can run it in dual channel mode... then both the PC and the GPU will finally be able to breathe...

This is how it looks on Intel...

They’re suggesting you reset the BIOS. There should be a button right on the motherboard near the battery... if you can't find it, you might have to use the jumpers. Usually, the jumper is connected to two pins for normal operation, with a third one sitting right there. To reset, you bridge those two outer pins, pull the jumper, and move it to the other set of pins... Or, just pop the battery out and leave it for an hour. You could also try shorting the positive and negative terminals on the battery slot with a small screwdriver once the battery is out. Anyway, all of this is detailed in your motherboard manual. If you don't have it, just download it online...

Cheap hardware and professional work don't exactly go hand in hand... It might pass for basic office PCs or simple terminals, but that's about it...

A 3G Star setup shouldn't actually be that bad. For your specific workflow, you'd probably just need to add more RAM and see which processor you're running with.
PC buying advice needed in Desktops ·
First, list exactly what you're running here.

CPU

Motherboard model

RAM specs

Power supply, hard drives, how old they actually are, etc.

Second, try a clean Windows install with all the latest drivers. If it still glitches after that, you'll need to run some stress tests on the memory or the motherboard to see what's up. It might even be worth swapping out the power supply... Also, is the case clear of dust? What kind of temps are we looking at?

In my opinion, NUCs are just a waste of money. You can get way more bang for your buck by building a standard desktop instead... And as for desk space, just stick a trash can behind or next to your desk and call it a day...

In Chrome, you could just hit the zoom option and scale everything up until those empty ad spaces disappear... I guess it works similarly for that one too...
GPU fan is acting up in Desktops ·
Make sure you get a high-performance fan capable of hitting 5000 RPM, and you'll need a solid way to mount it securely

You could also look into Accelero coolers to see which specific model fits your setup best

I've heard some people actually slap a CPU cooler on their GPU to get insane results... though mounting that thing properly is a total headache
GPU fan is acting up in Desktops ·
You did a great job cleaning things up after you snapped those fan blades on that 80mm unit 🙂

Options

Getting a Blower style fan specifically for that card isn't super expensive, but they can be hard to find...

Will the heatsink fit? Well, you won't know until you take it off and check. If it's still on the card, just see if the screw holes line up...

A little DIY... pull out that current fan—I think it's held by three screws on the side—and try swapping in a small blower fan from an old card and gluing it to the outer shroud... or just buy an 80-90mm fan and mount it to the outside casing so it blows through the opening... just make sure you check how many pins the connector needs

Need help with an upgrade in Desktops ·
If you just want to play chess or browse the web, it’s still a decent machine. You've got 2GB of RAM, so you could run Windows 7 32-bit. Just find a lightweight version...

First thing, blow all that dust out of the case. That's probably why it's being so loud. Grab a vacuum and a paintbrush...

Next, if you feel up to it—but be careful not to snap anything. Pull the cards and the memory sticks out and clean the contacts with some alcohol or an eraser to get rid of any oxidation or grime. If you aren't feeling confident about it, just don't do it.

Swap out the power supply. A 15-year-old unit is definitely on its last legs. Pick up a 400W unit from EVGA around $100 http://www.fsplifestyle.com/PROP161000101/. Also, the monitor might be dead, so you might need to grab a new one or something used...

Once you install Windows 7 and the right drivers, you'll finally see what you're working with.

Maybe upgrade the RAM later. If you hit 3GB total, then 32-bit Windows is fine. If you go higher than that, you'll need a 64-bit OS, but the question is whether your Pentium 4 even supports 64-bit. It probably doesn't. If it doesn't, you're stuck with a 32-bit system no matter what.

You can keep the integrated graphics and the power supply (though honestly, you should just grab a new PSU)... here is an upgrade path from $700$250$1667 without having to smash anything

Since the CPU has Vega 8 graphics built-in, you can actually play games on that too...
