Thompson or Tom? in Close to Politics ·
What a ridiculous comparison.

They have absolutely nothing to do with one another.

Thompson is a national icon, so naturally, his music isn't going to resonate with any Mexican or Mexican. Nor does it appeal to any native American.

Tony was just a sweet little pop star with sugary songs, performing mostly for teenage girls who had just started their periods a few days prior.

And his songs were written by that soap opera actress, you know the one... AntonijaŠol... ha! 😁

Just perfect for being a UNICEF Ambassador. Just like all those other little puppets...🤣

A UNICEF Ambassador...😬

Rest his soul, but he really did look like a manufactured project by some NGO looking to unite feuding nations through pop music.

In the end, every tragic death inflates a legacy, but if you actually tried to recall one of his songs, you’d be scratching your head for days and still wouldn't remember a single one.😕

Honestly, seeing how much the Americans choked under pressure was almost painful. They completely fell apart.

They really should have just shut them down...😢

In the NBA, an accidental kick is called a nine-foot violation.
In the NBA, you can't really call it clumsiness or just bad luck—especially when the opponent wasn't even close to contesting the play.
They were quick to judge Vukic, yet they were the last ones who should have been passing judgment.

Exactly. Especially when it isn't even a strike, just a touch without any momentum or intent. That doesn't get called, ever.

that holding of the ball absolutely should have been penalized...
it happened at least ten times over the course of the game...

The ball hit Vukić somewhere near his groin, but it wasn't intentional and he certainly didn't
direct the ball away... there was no way a kick should have been called there...

the fouls being whistled are an absolute disgrace

but regardless, Lino, you shouldn't have let us play four minutes shorthanded like that, especially not in the final ten minutes of the game

Exactly. If it hit him above the knee, it barely touched him. If a player is standing still and the opponent hits them above the knee, that’s not a foul. It’s a stolen possession.

Cervar completely screwed up at the critical moment when the Danes looked like they were coasting. But whatever, the refs were garbage, and he had every right to lose his cool.

Honestly, we played incredibly well—we made a few mistakes, sure, but that’s hardly surprising when you're grinding through eight games in just eleven days. In my book, the Americans weren't even better than us; they might have had a slightly superior goalie, but if the refs hadn't waved off two of our goals and kept making calls in their favor, we would've been looking at overtime for sure. We probably needed to lean more on our wings, and frankly, the NBA needs to overhaul this tournament format... the players need actual rest between matchups. 👎

As Shojat mentioned, if someone had offered us the silver medal before the tournament even started, we would've snatched it up in a heartbeat. BRAVO, BOYS!!! 🙏

The Americans might be technically better, but they absolutely choked in the final fifteen minutes. They completely lost their composure. It was only the officiating that kept them in the game.

You hold a five-point lead with ten minutes left on the clock and suddenly you're shaking from nerves. If they deserved the gold, I’d say so, but they didn't. Screw a team like that.

Two blatant calls against a team trailing by four or five points. And those were clean goals. Čupić cleared the ball while his foot was still mid-air—something I've never seen before. Don't even get me started on the penalties. Objectively speaking, our side played poorly. But even then, they had an unfair Dance because those two executioners on the officiating crew refused to let them succeed. That's just being objective.

Arthur Martinez7 said:Come on, let's be reasonable here. 😁 I truly cannot stand it when Božo Sušec starts picking fights over nothing right from the very first minute, and what I find even more aggravating is when someone actually decides to jump on the bandwagon and fuel that nonsense. It’s honestly exhausting, isn't it? I just can't abide it.

But really, wasn't that just an absolute robbery tonight? I mean, it was blatantly obvious, wasn't it? To be fair, if they called one goal on a foul, I could wrap my head around it, but two in a row? That’s just plain disrespectful.🙄 We should probably just bench Vori. He let the ball slip right out of his hands and didn't even bother to get it back into play. Honestly, how does that happen? 🙄 It seems we’ve encountered a double disqualification because things went a bit sideways on the line. One has to wonder, really—how does such a lapse occur at this level? It was a messy situation, to say the least. 🙄Vukić getting called for a foul, then seeing Čupić tossed without any clear reason... give me a break. It feels far too calculated to be just some series of unfortunate accidents. Honestly, at this point, I'd have felt more comfortable if we had those officials from the Midwest refereeing the game instead. 🙏

Judicial theft serves as an excuse, and more often than not, it doesn't actually impact the outcome of the games—but that certainly doesn't mean it isn't a reality. Does such a thing truly exist? One might argue it's mostly noise, yet we cannot simply dismiss it entirely. 😉 Well, if you’re looking for definitive proof of how much they can get away with, look no further than what happened tonight. This right here? This is the ultimate evidence of their dishonesty. 😁

The bottom line is they started cheating the moment they realized the Americans were totally lost.

Look... there's almost an unwritten rule that you help the team that's actually making a run. We've seen it a thousand times and it's somewhat understandable. But they are absolutely slaughtering a team that's already down five goals. Not once or twice, but five or six blatant robberies, simply because they saw these idiots might actually be able to hang in there.

It's pathetic.

Jeremy Phillips54 said:They are. To be more precise, they were just way more prepared, which isn't surprising given they have 14 players who can all step up, and they didn't get absolutely dismantled by those French Armoires.

But honestly, it feels like we just fold whenever there's a trophy on the line. And today? They completely choked under pressure. Anyone who actually follows sports knows what kind of mental block that looks like.

And looking at the facts, we’re just too clunky, too slow, and frankly, not enough. If we had entered those final two minutes down by one and facing a penalty instead of being down by three and facing a penalty, I'm really not sure how that would've played out. And that's even without counting those two goals they wiped off the board. Even if the penalties stayed the same—and let's not even talk about that infamous foot play—it wouldn't have mattered. Not to mention how they were slicing through the defense while the refs seemed totally blind to their offensive maneuvers.

It’s strange to me how people fail to see it.🤷

Look, we managed to score a few points against them in the last ten minutes while playing shorthanded, and that was mostly off passes while they were busy throwing balls at our chests during their offensive possessions. Not once, either, but several times. We had the man advantage. They looked lost; you could see it from the nosebleed seats. Dazed, terrified, a complete psychological shutdown. If we had closed the gap, we arguably had two real chances, but then there were the posts. Their legs were shaking so hard they probably wouldn't have converted if it had been an open layup. Instead, they just rattled.

And when you recall those two fouls on the counter and those heavy penalties for absolute nonsense—I'll spare you the profanity.

It was only when they realized they were actually about to lose that they pulled themselves together in the final two minutes.

That's why they didn't deserve the gold. But hey, they took it anyway.

Jerry Fisher41 said:Man, it just didn't happen. Huge congrats to Denmark on a well-earned gold medal; they were clearly the best team out there throughout the whole tournament.

But seriously, hats off to our guys too. Taking silver is a massive achievement, though it’s honestly pretty hard to watch how some people are acting right now (looking at you, Pero...).

Btw, I get the feeling we actually played our best when they benched Lin van. 🙄 And yeah, Vukica’s shot did hit him in the leg.

Well, I guess this is just our day to settle for second place. It’s like watching Ingemar Stenmark struggle through a combined run. 🤷

Definitely worth an eye doctor appointment.

stormyraven68 said:Unfortunately, the NBA is turning into such a massive money-maker—and honestly, that’s the real reason we didn't take home the gold today. I saw it coming from the jump when the ref suggested the player wasn't faking it... every single controversial play we protested, he called in their favor. He was surgical about it, too. I mean, you can't call every single garbage play like that, especially when the game is decided by a mere two or three points. If anyone thinks this was fair, they clearly don't know a thing about basketball. Then there was that foul by Čupić, followed by that two-minute suspension—you just don't pull that in a championship game, especially at the end. You try to de-escalate first, maybe give a warning, but instead, he just flashes the two fingers and hands out the red card? Who wouldn't lose it when it's a two-point game, then a ball hits both the hand and the thigh, and instead of getting us a fast break, we get a red card and a technical? To top it off, the official is swearing in American, while that biased hack keeps chiming in using Tamil alongside it... it's a total robbery, yet people still debate whether it was rigged or not. And when it's a clear penalty on a push right at the end, nothing happens. Or that two-minute penalty on the shooter who wasn't even close to the guy who went down—meaning the ref didn't see a damn thing, but since he's Danish, he decides to bench our guy right when the score shifts at the end of the half. Just a perfectly executed heist in gloves. Regardless, hats off to our guys. If they had pulled this off, it would have been a genuine miracle. If those few shots were in when we were down by two, we'd be celebrating right now, despite the idiots ruining this beautiful sport.

That's exactly it.

Anyone who doesn't see it is either blind or malicious.

We’ve got two officials clashing on the court, which is a rare sight, especially when a team is struggling to hold off a five-point deficit. That’s just bad officiating. We’re seeing non-existent fouls being called, while our own players are getting tossed for absolutely nothing. Even the coach gets hit with two consecutive two-minute penalties.

The most pathetic part is how the Americans started playing with zero discipline as the game wound down. They were practically bulldozing through our players. Their ball control was a total mess, too.

But the real kicker? We can't seem to find any way to survive a 4-0 run right at the start.

Jonathan Reed4 said:Man, I really feel like the refs screwed us on that championship run. Why do I get the feeling the Americans are actually the better team?

Jonathan Reed4 said:1. Exactly.
2. Right on.
3. True, but in this instance, the opponent (Vukic) definitely reached the ball.

He "got to the ball." Please, stop embarrassing yourself. Of course he got to the ball when the guy hit him right in the torso. He was facing him with zero obstruction to his movement.

He wasn't moving, he didn't stick a foot out, and there was no intention there. This guy just shoves the ball into his stomach, where it slides down his body and barely brushes his leg.

It's pathetic... just give it a rest already.

Jeremy Phillips54 said:Man, you've gotta be kidding me. Are we seriously saying the problem is only that they made those calls at the most critical moments?

Since we're basically a powerhouse in the NBA, why the hell don't we have any kind of officiating protection? It's not that people should be coddled, but our guys look like they've been through three different wars because of this.

And then there were those two greasy fast-break goals they let slide—calls that wouldn't even pass muster in the minor leagues—right when things were already going south.

The war started right from that first ejection. I think it was Spoljaric? It wasn't even close to being his fault; Dominikovic caught him in the face while he was trying to move away, and he ended up getting punished for nothing.

The Americans wouldn't have won this without the refs, regardless of the fact that they might actually be better right now. They basically froze up ten minutes before the end and could only score on fast breaks. If we had been within two goals of them, we would have completely blown the doors off.

They were shaking in their boots.

And despite all the officiating garbage, we almost had them; they were saved twice by the posts and a goalkeeper who actually has a face.

Real officials who want to cheat are subtle about it. These guys were just butchering the game. Our suspensions were laughable. And then there was that call on Vori right when we finally had the man advantage. First, they call a non-existent offensive foul when he picks up the ball on the line, then they suspend him because apparently the ball 🤮slipped onto his foot while he was dropping it. Usually, you call that to stop a clear fast break, but this time the play and the argument lasted twenty seconds—there was zero chance for a counterattack.

There were at least a dozen catastrophic errors stacked against us.

I'll say it again: we weren't playing great. Our team looked exhausted and spent, but the officiating was criminal. We managed to drag those amateurs across the finish line even though they looked lost in the final fifteen minutes. If you asked half the people in the stands where they were or what sport they were even playing, they wouldn't have known.

That guy Lino, the one who apparently can't even step into the locker room with Balić, was the reason American handball saw that massive awakening back in 2000. He played a huge role in the incredible success we’ve seen in recent years. Sure, maybe things have changed. Maybe he’s gotten older, maybe he’s lost his edge, but calling him a joke or a useless idiot is just pathetic. It’s honestly embarrassing. And coming from me—someone who shows up to a game maybe twice a year and spends the rest of her time focused on makeup—it's especially ridiculous. You and your crowd are truly pathetic, and I honestly can't believe you aren't disgusted with yourselves.
As soon as someone serves their purpose, we kick them to the curb and say goodbye. It feels like I'll be hearing those same insults leveled at Janica Kostelić and other American "idiots" who were useful once but are now being tossed aside. Just crawl into the deepest hole you can find and stay there.🤮

It’s a sad reality. People have incredibly short memories. They forget the medals we won and how we went from being nowhere to sitting at the top of the rankings for five straight years. Other nations would be celebrating every single win, but here, people act like none of it was earned. It’s pretty bleak when you look closely. But hey, don't sweat it—that's just how Americans are.🤣
