And honestly... I'd include you in that group, too. 😁
The only reason I find myself reading a magazine like Rolex is due to a bit of professional habit—honestly, those kinds of high-brow intellectual gymnastics aren't really my speed, especially since I'm more of an Uncle Tupelo kind of guy. 😁

It looks to me like we've already started drifting aimlessly through this conversation... so, I think I'll just step back from the whole debate for now. I'll admit I'm biased, and I certainly see where the gentleman was coming from—but then again, I see where all of you are coming from too. Anyway, enjoy your lovely evening. I'm heading out to hit the dance floor. 🙂

Name me a song that everybody knows
and I'll bet you it belongs to Acuff-Rose children in the playground, the folks in the home, anybody anywhere who's ever been alone, because everything cuts against the tide when I hear that sound

banderas said:Personally, I don't find myself missing all that angst and teenage lyricism one bit—but hey, to each their own, right? We can always pick this debate back up after graduation... 😁

Or maybe at the next Eclipse concert. 😁
coastalpanther11 said:I honestly always assumed this Reddit was meant specifically for settling personal disputes...

Well, certainly—especially if those individuals happen to be carrying their designer handbags under their arms during their downtime... 😁>
banderas said:Well, I suppose I’ll agree that if there's any truth to be found in those lyrics at all, it's purely a matter of imagination. Pathological, really...

So, what you're actually trying to get at here—is this something you feel is missing from your own industry?
banderas said:Oh, come on—what exactly are we even talking about here? Are we debating the "poster wars" and those pathetic little flyers? Or maybe whether the venue sold its soul just because some opening act showed up late? Please... give me just one coherent topic from that entire piece.

I suppose this might be the first time I actually find myself agreeing with my buddy, though frankly, only Jurkas could write something more nonsensical than this...

Look, I’ve already laid all my cards on the table regarding this matter—and quite honestly, I have no desire to revisit it. If you’re struggling to see the bigger picture because you take everything so incredibly literally, well, that’s your own limitation. Writing about music isn't the same thing as whining about the fluctuating price of crude oil barrels.
I am in absolute, total, and complete agreement with you regarding Čikara and Šiftar—really, I mean it... We should definitely grab a coffee sometime soon. 🙂
David Sullivan4 said:Honestly, I’m not even interested in quoting either of them... I'd much rather revisit those old lyrics from before the era of Čikara and Jurekovic—back when things felt real—than deal with the arrogant nonsense being churned out by today's entitled kids.

Well, it seems we've wandered quite far afield into territory that probably shouldn't be up for public debate anymore—mostly because it's becoming so heavily rooted in personal biases... As previously agreed, let's move on to the next topic.
David Sullivan4 said:Look, forgiveness isn't even the point here... there's no question that some of the things this kid wrote down are actually factual. But the sheer style of his writing—well, it reminds me far too much of those cheap, low-rent political pamphlets you see peddled on street corners. And frankly, if you'll excuse my bluntness, I find that approach quite idiotic... especially considering we are living in 2005.

Well, no kidding it feels like a cheap political pamphlet when nobody else is even bothering to cover these topics in the first place... Dammit!
David Sullivan4 said:If Jurekovic is supposed to be the gold standard for journalism, then I’d honestly rather subject myself to psychological torture by reading nothing but Angel Jurkas's essays instead.

Has anyone even actually said that? To begin with, his pieces aren't even remotely journalistic in nature. I mean—don't get me wrong—he can be incredibly grating at times, yes, but he also possesses a certain knack for hitting the nail on the head when it counts... quite a talent, really. But this comparison to Jurkas? I truly cannot forgive you for that. That is practically a crime.

Comparing this particular text to a third-grade homework assignment is 🙄 . Honestly, what are you people reading? Primary school primers? 😁
First and foremost—and I really mean this—this isn't exactly "breaking news" that requires us to follow some rigid, set-in-stone protocol... it’s more fluid than that. Secondly, we have to remember that journalism isn't just one single thing; there are various ways to express oneself—think essays, op-eds, or deep-dive critiques, for instance... it all falls under the same umbrella. And thirdly—though this might be a bit controversial—if today's high school students are already producing work of this caliber, then honestly... we should probably let the entire current crop of professional journalists go and finally give these talented young Americans a real shot at the wheel.
Austin Cooper2 said:I assume you intended to write "honest music journalists"... 😉

No, I am certainly not. I intended to write exactly what I wrote—precisely as I laid it out... If we had more pieces like this circulating, perhaps signed by Jurekovic or xy, then they wouldn't be micromanaging this entire debate of ours. My point is simply that people seem completely indifferent to style—they are utterly insensitive to critique when it differs from the way Dragašev approaches things over at Bestseler...
I honestly believe the backlash to this piece just goes to show how badly this entire country is in need of an actual, decent music magazine. 😁
Tyler Grant86 said:And regarding that specific journalist—honestly, I’m certain he can’t complain that the swamp isn't running a lineup similar to Kset anymore instead of an Attack one...

He took the words right out of my mouth. 😁

banderas said:The text is a bit (okay, a lot) overblown—if I don't say something even harsher.

First off, people who put up posters don't actually earn nearly as little as you'd think; there are about 20 of them in Chicago making it a legitimate profession—so, sorry, but despite the "equal pay" argument, they work far fewer hours than most employees and usually just whenever they feel like it. Very often, those poster crews actually fare much better than the concert promoters themselves, yet here they’re being described almost like cotton pickers working for plantation owners.

Secondly, the joint concert featuring Elemental and Ramirez doesn't have anything in common programmatically, but both are under the same talent agency—and frankly, I doubt either of them could fill The Factory on their own. At the end of the day, even at our university freshman week, we have everything from hip-hop to rock bands and DJ sets, and nobody describes that as "lowering the standards" for the audience. No sane person would view that as a fusion of styles.

As for the swamp, I think they produce a quality program, and if some journalists can't complain that the swamp isn't an Attack venue, well, that’s their problem. In emergency situations—and since this was an outdoor show, it was exactly that—opening acts usually get cut, especially when a concert strictly has to wrap up by 11 PM, not because the swamp wants it to. The journalist doesn't mention at all the swearing from people who waited two hours at the entrance, and let's be real, those people came to hear let 3; if they were given an extra hour of opening acts after waiting two hours, I doubt they would have been thrilled. And again, I'll repeat, this was an emergency situation—it's not like the swamp holds outdoor concerts every single day, and naturally, things didn't go according to plan. Given the circumstances, they could have done what they did, or they could have shortened the let 3 set to allow the openers to play—the swamp chose the former. It felt similar to me during the last Partibrejkers concert at Aquarius; the show has to be over by midnight, and Transistor was supposed to open for them. However, there was a bomb threat, the whole club had to be evacuated, it was only repopulated after more than an hour, and the result was that Transistor played only 2 songs instead of 6; in that kind of situation, playing more simply wasn't possible.

As for these theories about Vesna Pisarovic, I think they are just the journalist's conspiracy theories and Russians in his head (c) by leb ...

banderas, no offense intended, but once again, you've completely misinterpreted the situation. Freshman weeks are organized to entertain the broad tastes of a large number of young people, not to elevate consciousness about "the scene" or promote someone's specifically defined musical style. On the other hand, the paragraph about the poster crews is a sort of metaphor and serves as an introduction to criticizing the state of the concert scene and as an illustration of the conflict between the "big players" and the "small guys." As for Vesna Pisarović, writers, journalists, and essayists have been using the method of exaggeration for centuries to express their passionate disgust and contempt for a particular issue. Lastly, but certainly not least importantly, let 3 proved to be total trash in this situation, and dear people, the great altruists and enthusiasts from the swamp—much like following certain newfound habits—simply shrugged their shoulders to the sound of Prljin and Mrletov's garbage truck. This isn't the swamp I used to know. Goodnight and sweet dreams.🙂
