PC froze and now won't turn on in Desktops ·
Benjamin King2 said:It’s not the DOS thing—it's the BIOS. You should check the BIOS settings to see if the date got reset or something; if it did, you probably just need to swap out the CMOS battery on the motherboard.

Yeah, okay, it's the BIOS... I don't know why I kept blaming DOS, my bad. But wait, how am I even supposed to go about checking the date in there?🙂

Benjamin King2 said:If you’re looking at 2011, you might as well go for a 6-core—quad cores aren't really worth it when you consider what Haswell brings to the table. Honestly, if you aren't planning on overclocking, just grab an Intel Core i7 4770 and call it a day. Regarding upgrades... well, Broadwell chips will use the same Socket 2011 as Haswell, but I'd be careful. I highly doubt current motherboards will just work out of the box; you might even end up needing a new power supply along with the board. So, this "upgrade" could turn into a massive money pit pretty fast. On the bright side, Socket 2011 isn't going anywhere—Intel has too many hardcore users relying on it to just ditch it. But hey, let's be real, every platform eventually becomes obsolete, so I wouldn't lose sleep over how long it lasts. What kind of software are you running?

So I just gave it a shot—and seriously, if I even tap it or nudge it slightly, the whole thing just freezes up. And I’m telling you, all the connections are seated perfectly fine.

Then it won't even boot up right away; it just keeps trying itself over and over until it finally catches.
And then DOS just throws an "overclocking failed" error at me...
It’s like some kind of loose contact or something went sideways with the hardware...

So, the damn thing started shutting down on me again—totally froze up, wouldn't even boot. Turns out the connector was just acting loose, so I popped it back in, snapped it shut, and it's running again. But then, of course, it decided it needed to run a Windows repair, and wouldn't you know it... for the first time in two years, it’s throwing that "Windows is not genuine" error at me. It's like the system is getting all sensitive or something. I've actually noticed before that if I move the case even a little bit, it tends to hang.

And since this rig is actually for work, I need it to hold its own when it comes to rendering Full HD video, music production, or slapping audio and video together—you know, all that heavy lifting.

Robert Rodriguez2 said:not really necessary—you can find much cheaper deals if you look for a Haswell platform, or even AM3+
are you paying cash or using a card?

if you're using cash, you could probably score an even better deal since Links is definitely charging a premium.

I mean, I'm not sure how we're even going to swing the cost, but honestly, there isn't much of a selection of shops here in Cleveland.

Benjamin King2 said:It doesn’t necessarily have to be totally dead—it might just not be pushing enough juice to all your parts. Assuming there's even an actual issue to begin with. That's why I'm suggesting you swap things out; you've gotta test the components one by one to figure out which one is actually acting up.

So, I went ahead and tore the whole thing down and put it back together, and now... weirdly enough... it's running perfectly fine. The real question is how long this lasts before it acts up again. Honestly, part of me almost wishes it would just die completely—that way I'd actually know what needs replacing.

Hey there,

So, if we happen to come into a little extra cash, my girlfriend and I are looking at putting together a new rig. Since she works in Adobe Premiere Pro, we’re trying to figure out what kind of specs we actually need to get things moving. Our current setup basically died a hero's death—luckily enough, she snagged a work computer for her job, so while we’re saving up, we’ll just patch this old thing up to keep us afloat. But yeah, before we drop any money, we're doing our homework.

Basically, we're looking at a CPU, motherboard, RAM, and maybe a GPU too.
We've got an M-Audio interface, an Apple T260HD monitor that does the trick, and we just picked up some new DVD and Blu-ray drives last month. For power, we're running a Corsair TX650, and the graphics card is an EVGA NVIDIA GTX 550 Ti.
What kind of processor, motherboard, and RAM should we be eyeing? And honestly, do we even need to bother swapping out the GPU?
Gaming isn't even on the radar here—not a single game gets played on this machine—so that’s definitely not something we need to factor into the budget. This is strictly a workstation for Adobe Premiere Pro and photo editing. Just pure work stuff.

Here’s what I was thinking:

CPU

Motherboard

RAM

Also, I'm a bit lost on the whole socket situation—what's the deal with the difference between a 2011 socket versus something like 1155 or 1150? Which one gives better performance, and more importantly, which one is better for future-proofing? I don't want to end up in a dead-end situation like the old 775 where everything becomes obsolete overnight if a part fails.

Anyway, thanks a ton for the help, and sorry for the long-winded post.

Benjamin King2 said:Try borrowing a different power supply just to test things out—and definitely double-check those connectors going from the PSU to the motherboard to make sure they’re actually seated right. You can technically fire up a PC without a CPU installed, so the culprit is likely either the power supply or the motherboard itself.

Man, thanks a ton—you've been a huge help here since I'm basically a total amateur when it comes to IT stuff.😁 😁I mean, I know how to put a rig together and install software and all that, but when it comes to the technical deep dives? Yeah, I'm a bit of a klutz.
I'll try to scrounge up a spare power supply to test. Even though this was a pretty pricey Corsair RM650, it might still be worth it compared to hunting down a motherboard or a processor—which would be a nightmare given they're old Socket 775 parts. Still, my gut tells me it's the motherboard.
Besides, what would cause the optical drives to spin up if the power supply wasn't doing its job???

So, just like the title says—everything suddenly froze. Mouse won't move, keyboard is dead, nothing. It’s just stuck staring at the desktop. I tried hitting the power button on the case, but it wouldn't budge. On the second attempt, it actually booted up, ran for maybe ten minutes, and then froze again. After that, it just died completely. Now, it won't even turn on. I’m hearing this weird beep, too—not every single time, but enough to be annoying—and then, nothing. Just silence.
I'm trying to wrap my head around which part actually kicked the bucket here. I ruled out the hard drive because, well, if the drive was the issue, I figured it would at least try to boot into DOS or throw some kind of error message. Power supply seems fine since the lights come on normally. And I don't think it's the RAM either, because again, I'd expect some sort of BIOS error or a boot attempt there.
Basically, using my "expert" amateur logic, I've narrowed it down to the motherboard or the CPU. Though, honestly, I've never had a CPU die on me before, so I have zero clue what those symptoms actually look like...
When I try to power it up now, it gets juice, but it won't actually start. The LEDs light up, but the fans won't spin and nothing else happens.
I'm in a bit of a bind because I've got some work to finish by Friday and I have no idea what parts I need to swap out. It doesn't help that this thing uses an old LGA 775 socket, which is pretty much ancient history at this point, but hey, I guess I can hunt something down on Craigslist if I figure out what's broken.
For context, the motherboard is an ASUS ROG Maximus and the CPU is an Intel Core i7 or something similar.

Thanks in advance for any advice you guys can toss my way.

Hey everyone, thanks
This book by the doctor seems like it’s actually going to hit the mark—and honestly, I’ve already got an appointment lined up with a therapist once I wrap up my last final next week.
I can't recall her name off the top of my head, but a bunch of you guys pointed me toward it.
I was half-expecting you all to just shut me down, thinking maybe I didn't belong here since some people deal with much heavier stuff, but you guys were actually incredibly helpful.
Thanks.

Honestly, being "unemployed" is the absolute worst part—it just leaves me sitting here overanalyzing every single little ache and every stupid thing that goes wrong.
It’s gotten to the point where I’m terrified of just being alone, so I end up pushing everyone's buttons and badgering people just because I'm scared of the silence.
I really need to get my act together and do some soul-searching.
I think I'll go see a therapist to see if all this ties back to old stuff and maybe get some actual professional guidance—but I’m skipping the psychiatrist. From what I've seen, those guys are usually in a much deeper hole than I am.
And as for popping heavy-duty antidepressants? Yeah, no thanks. You have to actually fix the headspace, not just numb everything out with pills.

I mean, they’re basically saying it was a perfect storm—everything just hit at once. Between grinding through my final exams and trying to navigate living on my own for the first time—you know, all that whole "adulting" thing with bills and independence—it was a lot. Plus, my old job was a total meat grinder; I was stuck in a car for three or four hours a day and handling over a hundred calls per shift, most of them international clients. It went from a hundred miles an hour straight to nothing, and since I was still riding that high-stress wave, I guess it was just bound to snap eventually.
Once I wrap up this exam, I’m heading to see my therapist—well, the one I’ve been seeing for a while—because they require you to bring someone along for the first session.
Am I a hypochondriac? in Health ·
I’m honestly pretty paranoid when it comes to health stuff—nothing has actually gone wrong with me yet, so I guess there hasn't been much reason to freak out.
The thing is, half my family are doctors, so ever since I was a kid, I've been surrounded by medical atlases and all that nerdy junk, plus the whole internet rabbit hole...
Maybe if I just knew less about specific symptoms, I wouldn't obsess over them so much and wouldn't be such a nervous wreck.
And I think a huge part of this stems from being 14 and watching my grandfather slowly fade away from cancer—we were really close, too.
It was lung cancer that eventually metastasized; he couldn't even talk because his vocal cords were shot, couldn't make it to the bathroom, couldn't walk... toward the end, he was even having seizures. Basically, every single night during that time, I was praying for some kind of miracle, just believing he’d pull through... He ended up passing away the day before my birthday, and the funeral was on my actual birthday. I was supposed to visit him the day before he died, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it—I told him I was studying and we'd see each other in the morning, and he lived just two apartment buildings away from me. Then my dad woke me up the next morning to tell me Grandpa had passed at 3:00 AM.
Then, not even a year later, my other grandfather passed away from a heart attack. It wasn't as much of a shock since he didn't suffer as much, but still.
And I missed that chance to spend one last weekend with him, too. (And they say you learn from your mistakes, right?)
So yeah, when it comes to anything cancer-related, I get incredibly sensitive and slip right back into that paranoia.
I hope I didn't weigh you guys down too much with this, but it's easier to vent here—I feel like if I tried saying this to someone's face, I'd probably end up breaking down.
Thanks

Yeah, it’s a systemic issue—all because of a tick bite.
They say the meds are helping since they're taking them, but honestly, I can't even remember the name right now. Apparently, you can only get them over in Italy.
Look, it’s been 15 years since the diagnosis, so at this point, I'm just praying for a miracle—or at least some decent medical breakthrough.
Basically, there isn't much else I can do to help that person right now.

Look, I don't mind leaving—really, I don't—but I’m just praying this is all just some mental funk and not, you know, an actual physical thing... Honestly, it’s got me a little spooked.
So, someone really close to me is battling this disease. When they first got the Diagnosis, the doctors were basically counting down—saying they had maybe six months to a year and a half left. Well, it’s been 14 years since then, so I guess the prognosis was... off by a little bit.
Anyway, I’m looking to hear about your experiences and what you all know—specifically if there’s any hope for a cure, or even just getting things under control.
The lab results are pretty rough, and honestly, the symptoms seem to be getting worse as the years go by. We're talking joint pain, skin spots, that whole thing...
I heard there's some kind of medication being tested in Italy right now that’s supposedly showing some good results.
Any insight or help at all would mean the world to me.
Thanks.

I’ve posted a few things about my health lately, but here’s the full rundown. Just a quick heads-up—please don't hit me with the "you're just messing with us" comments... this stuff is actually serious and I'm not playing around.
Honestly, I don't even know where to start. Everything was totally fine until about six months ago when the heartburn started. Back in November, I had a gastroscopy and they diagnosed me with Stage 1 GERD, plus they found H. pylori in my bloodwork.
Since then, it’s just been one thing after another.
First, it was this tightness in my chest, then the dizziness kicked in, followed by headaches and this weird numbness in my ears.
Then came the muscle twitching—fasciculations all over—though maybe I always had those and just never noticed? After that, I started getting pain in my testicles. Now it’s my groin and a bit of my lower back too. My back has actually been a chronic issue for four years now—just tight muscles that need constant stretching. On top of everything, I get these panic attacks that just make the physical symptoms way worse.
I guess I’m just a massive hypochondriac, but I’m terrified of diseases. My mind immediately jumps to the worst-case scenarios—testicular cancer, lymph nodes, brain, lungs... the whole list.
I had bloodwork done back in January and everything looked perfect, aside from the H. pylori, which I’ve since cleared up.
Blood pressure is great, spine looks normal, pulse and breathing are fine... I don't drink, I don't smoke, and I definitely don't do drugs.
My eyes are perfectly fine, too (I actually thought the dizziness might be an eye issue for a bit).
Now my knees and elbows have started acting up—or maybe I'm just overthinking that, too.
Also, I’ve had this spot on my right leg for five years. It’s darker than the rest of my skin and it itches, so naturally, I jump straight to "cancer." I can't quite remember how it got there, but I think I scratched myself on a table once and it just stayed like that after the scab healed, though I can't be 100% sure. That spot hasn't changed, grown, or shrunk at all in those five years.
I’ve been taking Misar for the anxiety, and honestly, it helps a lot.
I'm 24, and I just feel like this isn't normal. That pressure in my chest happens all the time.
My doctor basically told me to see a psychologist because he thinks this is a textbook case of anxiety and hypochondria. His logic is that if all these symptoms were actually real, I'd be incredibly sick, and it would have shown up on my blood tests or something.
My appetite is fine and I haven't lost any weight over these last 6 or 7 months, but I feel like I'm constantly exhausted—maybe that's just in my head, too.
Anyway, it’s really messing with my life. I've been living in fear for half a year now, and my family is completely burnt out on hearing about it. They tell me I'm making it all up and that everything has a logical explanation, and that I just need to see a therapist.
Over the summer, I had a pretty intense job and was super stressed out, and all this started right when I stopped working. My folks think that stress was the trigger.
At this point, I have no idea what to believe.
Sorry for the wall of text, but this is a MASSIVE problem for me and it's really weighing me down.
