The madness of modern transfer windows

I was looking at some roster moves today and it honestly feels like the "sport" part of professional athletics is getting buried under massive, long-term business deals. It used to feel like a team built a squad for a specific era, but now it feels like they're just collecting assets like they're playing a massive game of Monopoly.
Every time a big club announces a teenager with a contract that stretches well into the next decade, I can't help but wonder if we're actually watching talent or just watching smart financial forecasting. It’s getting harder to track the actual "soul" of a team when the lineup is essentially a collection of long-term investments rather than a group of guys playing for the badge right now.
Is it even possible for a club to maintain a consistent identity when they're constantly locking in kids for seven or eight years at a time?
