Can I request my X-ray records if I paid for them out-of-pocket at a private clinic?

So, I just wrapped up my first checkup, and they had me get an X-ray done—which, by the way, I ended up paying out of pocket $67. Quick question though—am I actually allowed to ask them to send over a copy of that scan?

You absolutely have the right to ask for it. It's your data, after all! Perhaps they didn't hand it over simply because they assumed you wouldn't need it—or, if we're being a bit cynical, maybe they'd rather you don't take your business to another specialist elsewhere.

I asked them to send me a copy, but they’re giving me some runaround about how it was recorded just for their own internal use. Apparently, if a clip is actually cleared "for public release," then it becomes $267 and they hand it over on a DVD. Even though I already shelled out $67, they're claiming the initial walkthrough is totally free 😵

$267 Orthopedics??? What an absolute joke. Going to a private orthopedic clinic is basically just throwing money down the drain $83.

So, when I was booking my appointment, I made sure to ask if I needed to bring my old dental X-rays along. They told me it wasn't strictly necessary because they’d just take new ones right there on-site—though they did leave the door open if I really wanted to bring them. In my head, I figured either it wouldn't cost me a dime, or if they did charge me, the scans would be included in the fee. Basically, I thought I was covered one way or another.

Anyway, I'm just putting this out there so nobody else ends up getting caught off guard like I did...

aaaaaaaa !!! Unbelievable. Please, do tell me the name of that clinic—purely so I know which establishment is performing so poorly that I can make sure to steer clear of them. At the facility where I took my photos (where I paid $73), they were perfectly efficient about emailing everything over. However, when I requested a copy on a CD—which was their standard procedure in the past—they became rather hesitant (almost as if they were genuinely startled by the request!) and informed me they could burn a disc, but only for an additional charge of $17. At the time, it seemed a bit tacky, but this? This is truly grand in its absurdity. (I suppose they’ll probably try to tack on an extra fee for the "initial consultation" now, even though no consultation anywhere in the country costs nearly that much.)

They are absolutely losing it🙂 That place is Dragaš Dental Design. They actually have a 4.8 rating on Google, so maybe they really are good at what they do or whatever. Honestly, I don't know, but they get a big zero from me for being such lowlifes. If anyone needs proof, I can send over their emails.
